Everytime we need a remake or a sequel, that's yet another script or another movie that never got a chance to be made, because Hollywood is terrified to take risks.

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t use another culture’s version of a fairy tale for a remake instead of the same Grimm Brothers version? I took a children’s literature class in school and learned that there are many different versions of Cinderella and Snow White all around the world. It’s really interesting. Also…the dwarves WORKED in a cave…because they’re miners. The Prince didn’t stalk Snow White either.

Even with disney delaying the film and keeping the dwarves (albeit with cgi rather than actual dwarf actors. Thanks peter), it's pretty clear that the film would still end up being a disaster upon release. If disney wants to make a film that empowers women, at least make an animated original film, not a live-action remake of their very first animated feature! The first few live action movies were actually really good. Like Cinderella and The Jungle Book. The Jungle Book remake was very different from the animated version but it worked. I read that they tried to stay more true to the original story.
I quite liked the Dumbo remake. I've never seen the original but I love Tim Burton movies so I watched. I could see what it was trying to do from the off, and it worked fine for me. The message didn't get in the way of things.

Imagine saying that the story of Snow White is about "a dude who stalked her". Bro have you seen the damn movie? She's poisoned and falls into a coma. On top of that the 7 dwarves (probably the most popular characters) seem to be pushed aside because she has to be a girl boss now. Also saying these stories have "outdated" ideals.....uh no shit it's a FAIRYTALE! They were come up with like 200-300 years ago, or longer. It's quite literally a story about a girl who lives as a housemaid for 7 little people who's house she broke into and started fucking their shit up, gets poisoned, and falls in love with a prince after he saves her from her evil stepmother the queen. Not much to it other than that. No need for pandering. If you don't like the story then don't make the movie.
People seem to forget she was also 14 in the movie. Also she was still really sassy with the dwarves which I always found hilarious. “If you don’t wash, you don’t get supper.” She was also dealing with the fact that her step mother wants to kill her. From her reaction that never entered her mind and she was rightfully terrified. But she tries to keep her head up “With a Smile and a Song” and I think that’s pretty empowering itself.
I had no interest to second they announced that she was going to be Snow White, because I already knew that her personality was garbage from the BS. She had said about people needing to learn Spanish, because of the whole west side story, not having subtitles, and being, partly in Spanish thing, and then she started running her mouth for this I was like oh yeah I’m definitely not seeing this thing.

Does anybody seriously think the dwarves in Snow White are humans with dwarfism? I mean, they're DWARVES! It's their race. Like in Lord of the Rings. They are fantastical creatures! Never once before this did I think the 7 dwarves were short humans.
I did. I thought they were like the other dwarves I would see on TV. Semi-mythical, I guess, since I lived in a small town. I knew they existed, and I thought those were the ones that existed. Halle Bailey was the best part of little mermaid! My wife and I loved the movie tbh. It isn't as good as the original movie, but it's still a good addition overall.

I would say that 101 dalmatians was a success, because even as a little child, I remember the marketing! They did a fantastic job making sure you knew that that movie was happening! I actually watched it in the theater but remember finding it boring because the dogs didn’t talk 😂 as an adult, I still don’t like it as much as the animated movie but it’s not an awful remake 🤷♀️ it’s mediocre at best. To put the blame solely on Rachel Ziegler is unfair. Disney had encouraged her statements in the beginning, even Gal Gadot who plays the evil queen was encouraging the nerrative. But once everything backfired , they all left her get the heat by herself.

Honestly. I Don’t think Peter Dinklage should get the hate he’s receiving. He has every right to feel offended by the depiction of dwarves in film. This issue is that he’s far too disconnected from normal people and thus he doesn’t value money & work as highly as your average person would. I don’t think he’s a terrible person, I don’t think he deserves a ton of hate or for his career to suffer. But I do think he needs to take accountability and some form or fashion, help the very same community he was trying to protect and in turn, harmed.

But the story is not really about beauty at its core but more about women aging, the evil queen is becoming older while Snow White finally became an adult, and since society valus younger women over those who are a bit older the queen fear that she will get remplaced by Snowwhite

Always thought that a tasteful, non-shallow way of progressively redoing the story was to have Snow White start off as stark white like in the original. But when the evil Queen drives her out into the woods, she becomes more independent, tans up due to hard work in the sun, and the queen is furious and confused as to why Snow White is still considered the most beautiful though she is no longer the “fairest in the land.”

Rachel's comments on Snow White may have been obnoxious, but let's be honest a lot of you were criticising disney for the typical prince saving princess story. Even Lily james and Emma Watson have said their princesses "wasn't waiting to be saved, she's not gonna be saved by the prince" Disney also hasn't protected their brand and let actors speak negatively about their work so publicly. But the main reason why she is being criticised is because people don't wan't a Latina Snow white. Rachel has shown appreciation for the role and is talented enough for it, i hope she's careful with her words in the future.

The problem is that Rachel Zegler doesn't respect the legacy for the original. Yes, you can argue that the tropes of the original did not age the best, but you can be less obnoxious about it! There's no problem in Disney being inclusive in their casting, but have the actor fit the character. Disney should find more stories that lend themselves to diverse casting. Since the Snow White incident i really started disliking her, she has that toxic femininity thing going on and that's already becoming a plague! It literally made me less excited about The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes!
Ariel being my favorite disney princess watching the Little mermaid I was glad that they didn't change too much and that the core of the movie's story was still mostly the same, the only changes that were made besides ariel's look were: Giving erik a mom, and making humans scared of sea creatures, that's about it. And I feel like those changes don't take anything away from the rest of the story but fill in missing pieces from the original. The same way they aged up the prince from the Beauty and the beast so him not having parents would make more sense. The lyric changes while they weren't necesary, were barely noticable so complaing about them seems like such a reach. And people saying that they didn't like Halle's singing when she was on screen but loving it as soon as her voice was coming from a white woman(Vanessa) just shows people's racism. Comparing this movie's changes to the ones in snow white just doesn't make sense. Halle and most of the cast and crew spoke highly about the original, unlike literally anyone working on snow white. And correct me if I'm wrong but The little mermaid made 560 milion dollars while it costed 250 to make, most people really enjoyed the movie and I've seen so many people cry while watching it and non rasict people praising the voice talent. I just don't see how it could be seen as a failure.
I really really don’t like the remake of The Little Mermaid, because it’s all in the intonation and details, and in my opinion, those who did the remake simply do not understand the original film and approached the creation of the remake very lazily. But you know what makes me accept the existence of this lazy money-squeezer? Halle Bailey. Her singing, voice and acting are amazing and she truly looks like a Disney princess. And I really wish she had a movie all to herself, not tied to the cartoon or for her to play Tiana, because she absolutely doesn't deserve the backlash and having both sides - both the film's supporters and critics - brandish her as a racial card.

It’s more of a re-adaptation of the original story. You have characters like the White Queen, who was not in the original or the knave. Basically I’d much rather have a remake that actually does something different, on ONE CONDITION! That it’s done in a way that still respects the original. I’d be really happy with that than have a remake that as you put very well, have one or two things different about it, because then it raises the question of “why? Why are you making this movie if you only wanna do the same thing? It only makes me wanna go to the original.”

Exept that those fairytale are part of a culture, and the aestetic of said culture is often used in adaptation. For exemple would you want an Kirikou adaptation where the sorceress Karaba is played by Native American actress ? No because while sorceress don't exist the movie represent a culture where people have a dark skin so it should take actors who can represent said culture, the same apply to European stories. I guess it's ok for the little mermaid since the remake put it in the Caraïbe instead of Europe and the animated movies was already not faithful to the original tale but in general they don't change the setting and only put non European in an European setting. Also only adapting European stories and just adding non European in it is a lazy way to bring diversity and a bit ethocentric since it imply that stories from non European culture don't deserve to be adapted.

Now Marvel wants to "reboot" the MCU and basically redo everything. It's one thing to reboot a single superhero franchise like Batman and Spider-Man, but rebooting an entire interwoven franchise of multiple movie trilogies seems really dumb to me. I think the idea of passing the torch is great, but they just didn't execute it greatly. Maybe reboot Eternals, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, and other post-endgame heroes who had a bad start, and just leave the past alone. Sorry, but Tony Stark should stay dead. RDJ should never return as Tony Stark, and we don't need anyone else playing Tony Stark

I have this weird feeling that the bad press for this film was kind of staged or that Rachel Ziegler has a TERRIBLE PR team. I don’t even think a fair percentage of the movie was even filmed. Here’s my stupid theory: all the press is not press about the movie, but rather a way to get a data pool of the mass audience’s reaction. Everything about this film seems inorganic. The sets, the costuming and story choices are not that of a major studio production. The photo of the “dwarves” and Zegler standing in a field doesn’t seem like it came from a film shoot. There are no promotional clips to show the feel or tone of the movie from D23 which is weird. Disney usually does those things for D23. Since Wicked is actually being filmed and made- Disney may springboard on the audience’s favour of Wicked before commencing on their live-action remakes. And if my theory is wrong, it still doesn’t matter. If the Wicked movie adaption turns out to be a HUGE hit- granted Disney will try to make something to outdo it’s success. But it would the biggest kick in the pants to Disney because Wicked both stage musical and movie already did something better than what they’ve been trying to do with the Disney live-action remakes.
Feel bad for dwarf actors can't find any jobs. Now they rely on CGI just like Wonka and this. Freaking Peter Dinklage contradicted himself after he played iconic dwarf.
The Prince is creepy. In the original Grimm fairy tale, the Prince first sees Snow White in her coffin at the dwarfs' cottage. Even though he thinks she is dead, the Prince offers to buy her. The dwarfs refuse, so the Prince laments that he will die if he can't look upon Snow White. The manipulated dwarfs agree to give the Prince the seemingly dead Snow White as a gift. The Prince's servants carry Snow White's coffin everywhere, because the Prince cannot function without being able to look at the beautiful corpse. Eventually, the servants become so tired of carrying Old Snowy around that they pull her out of the coffin and hit her. The thrashing causes the poisoned apple in her throat to become dislodged and she wakes up. The Prince immediately asks a sheepish Snow White to marry him. They are wed the next day. To everyone demanding that Disney "respect the source material" and keep everything as it was, make sure you demand that the Prince buy Snow White's corpse and carry it around with him as he drools over her loveliness. Leave Rachel alone. In ten years people will realize she was treated as horrifically as Rebecca Black all over a kid's fairy tale.
I have nothing against Halle, but i wanted to send a message to Disney and chose not to watch the new Little Mermaid. I know ALot of people here in Finland, also did not watch it. And the message that i wanted to send was simple. A classic becomes a classic because people fell in love with the movies original, simple base line, basically Everything that made the movie a movie called Little mermaid. When you change the character itself, the storyline and ideology and even the soundtrack.. that not THE little mermaid anymore. And all of this, fall into Disney, not the actress they hired. But with Snow White, its a whole another story. I would say the first part applies here as well, but then when the cast and the Main Actress came out, bashing the original film and storyline.. That storyline WAS the thing that made Snow white classic in the first place so.. thats just a no for me. And to top it all of, the way this lady responded when people kept sayin this isnt okay.. She just disgusts me. It seems like only SHE is "good enough, educated enough" to give her 'professional opinion' about this.. Well, sweetie. I gotta tell you, the ONE thing that the audience has full authority over is wether they like the movie or not, and wether theyre going to watch it or not. And i am not going to watch it, JUST because of her.
Peter Dinklage seems to have conveniently forgotten that he appeared in the film "Tiptoes" which cast Gary Oldman as a little person, so I guess as recent as 2002 he was welling to swallow his pride for a paycheck.

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t use another culture’s version of a fairy tale for a remake instead of the same Grimm Brothers version? I took a children’s literature class in school and learned that there are many different versions of Cinderella and Snow White all around the world. It’s really interesting.

Even with disney delaying the film and keeping the dwarves (albeit with cgi rather than actual dwarf actors. If disney wants to make a film that empowers women, at least make an animated original film, not a live-action remake of their very first animated feature! The first few live action movies were actually really good. Like Cinderella and The Jungle Book. The Jungle Book remake was very different from the animated version but it worked. I read that they tried to stay more true to the original story.
I quite liked the Dumbo remake. I've never seen the original but I love Tim Burton movies so I watched. I could see what it was trying to do from the off, and it worked fine for me. The message didn't get in the way of things.
Cinderella 2015 was MAGICAL. These new reboots don't have that same magic. They all feel artificial, manufactured. Dear I say, fake.
I also love the Alice in wonderland and maleficent remakes. They brought more character and story.

People seem to forget she was also 14 in the movie. Also she was still really sassy with the dwarves which I always found hilarious. “If you don’t wash, you don’t get supper.” She was also dealing with the fact that her step mother wants to kill her. From her reaction that never entered her mind and she was rightfully terrified. But she tries to keep her head up “With a Smile and a Song” and I think that’s pretty empowering itself.

Does anybody seriously think the dwarves in Snow White are humans with dwarfism? I mean, they're DWARVES! It's their race. Like in Lord of the Rings. They are fantastical creatures! Never once before this did I think the 7 dwarves were short humans.
I did. I thought they were like the other dwarves I would see on TV. Semi-mythical, I guess, since I lived in a small town. I knew they existed, and I thought those were the ones that existed. My impression is that all this stuff is all spelled out in the contract. It's weird she would say all this. Not to mention that these interviews and every word that's said is pre-approved and scrutinized long before the actor says any of it.
Halle Bailey was the best part of little mermaid! My wife and I loved the movie tbh. It isn't as good as the original movie, but it's still a good addition overall.

Old European fables, fantasies and other tales don't require race bending or a UN diversity bus. It would make more sense to have insular tribes, races etc be a bit more similar to each other because of the tyranny of distance.

I would say that 101 dalmatians was a success, because even as a little child, I remember the marketing! They did a fantastic job making sure you knew that that movie was happening! I actually watched it in the theater but remember finding it boring because the dogs didn’t talk 😂 as an adult, I still don’t like it as much as the animated movie but it’s not an awful remake 🤷♀️ it’s mediocre at best. Glenn Close carries and straight up steals the show!

Honestly the remakes ran out of mileage starting with Mulan and Cruella, I don’t think any of these films were little more than Mediocre.

Disney claims to be for representation in media and yet will reject that for this film. The opportunity for it actually being legitimate was there. You had an opportunity to give seven actors a platform.

Honestly. I Don’t think Peter Dinklage should get the hate he’s receiving.
He has every right to feel offended by the depiction of dwarves in film.
This issue is that he’s far too disconnected from normal people and thus he doesn’t value money & work as highly as your average person would.
I don’t think he’s a terrible person, I don’t think he deserves a ton of hate or for his career to suffer. But I do think he needs to take accountability and some form or fashion, help the very same community he was trying to protect and in turn, harmed.

You didn't talk about the biggest issue with Mulan. That fact being they thanked an actual fluffing Concentration Camp! You also didn't mention the fact that Peter dinklage, first audition for one of the roles as a dwarf in the reboot. But the story is not really about beauty at its core but more about women aging, the evil queen is becoming older while Snow White finally became an adult, and since society valus younger women over those who are a bit older the queen fear that she will get remplaced by Snowwhite

Always thought that a tasteful, non-shallow way of progressively redoing the story was to have Snow White start off as stark white like in the original. But when the evil Queen drives her out into the woods, she becomes more independent, tans up due to hard work in the sun, and the queen is furious and confused as to why Snow White is still considered the most beautiful though she is no longer the “fairest in the land.”

Even tho I never liked snow white I knew she was to represent the traditional feminine girls and as a feminist I believe you shouldn't change Snow White's core values to a "girl boss" cause there are other princesses that have that as their core values but leave the people who want to be traditional alone damn.

I didn't have much of an interest in Little Mermaid, primarily because I thought it was wrong to 'blackwash' a main character, and also because I thought it was very Shallow to do so out of "inclusively" /racial quota nonsense.
However, after watching your take, I'm incline to reconsider since your made a good case that she was a great fit for the role, rather than some shallow race reason

And then peter dinklage said a thing which coincided with some casting choices that caised drama. The title is her name and how to kill a franchise. But you didn't say anything about it meaningful to me. Im being brutally honest here, but you seem unwilling to make a point. You need to get a better writer. Rachel's comments on Snow White may have been obnoxious, but let's be honest a lot of you were criticising disney for the typical prince saving princess story. Even Lily james and Emma Watson have said their princesses "wasn't waiting to be saved, she's not gonna be saved by the prince" Disney also hasn't protected their brand and let actors speak negatively about their work so publicly. But the main reason why she is being criticised is because people don't wan't a Latina Snow white. Rachel has shown appreciation for the role and is talented enough for it, i hope she's careful with her words in the future.

Ariel being my favorite disney princess watching the Little mermaid I was glad that they didn't change too much and that the core of the movie's story was still mostly the same, the only changes that were made besides ariel's look were: Giving erik a mom, and making humans scared of sea creatures, that's about it. And I feel like those changes don't take anything away from the rest of the story but fill in missing pieces from the original. The same way they aged up the prince from the Beauty and the beast so him not having parents would make more sense. The lyric changes while they weren't necesary, were barely noticable so complaing about them seems like such a reach. And people saying that they didn't like Halle's singing when she was on screen but loving it as soon as her voice was coming from a white woman(Vanessa) just shows people's racism. Comparing this movie's changes to the ones in snow white just doesn't make sense. Halle and most of the cast and crew spoke highly about the original, unlike literally anyone working on snow white. And correct me if I'm wrong but The little mermaid made 560 milion dollars while it costed 250 to make, most people really enjoyed the movie and I've seen so many people cry while watching it and non rasict people praising the voice talent. I just don't see how it could be seen as a failure.
I really really don’t like the remake of The Little Mermaid, because it’s all in the intonation and details, and in my opinion, those who did the remake simply do not understand the original film and approached the creation of the remake very lazily. But you know what makes me accept the existence of this lazy money-squeezer? Halle Bailey. Her singing, voice and acting are amazing and she truly looks like a Disney princess. And I really wish she had a movie all to herself, not tied to the cartoon or for her to play Tiana, because she absolutely doesn't deserve the backlash and having both sides - both the film's supporters and critics - brandish her as a racial card.

Strikes me as a 20 year old desperate to fit into a niche or community, but having none of the actual beliefs to back up what’s she’s saying. I have to assume that’s the reason she gets caught in saying the opposite to what she said in a previous interview. It’s obvious to me she needs to grow up and experience the world more. Find what she actually believes and sticking to it. Being what everyone expects from her, isn’t going to make her more liked.

@@Charlesperalo yeah, I think I’d much rather have a reboot like Alice in Wonderland remake, because when you think about it, that movie isn’t much of a remake. It’s more of a re-adaptation of the original story. You have characters like the White Queen, who was not in the original or the knave.
Basically I’d much rather have a remake that actually does something different, on ONE CONDITION! That it’s done in a way that still respects the original. I’d be really happy with that than have a remake that as you put very well, have one or two things different about it, because then it raises the question of “why? Why are you making this movie if you only wanna do the same thing? It only makes me wanna go to the original.”

Exept that those fairytale are part of a culture, and the aestetic of said culture is often used in adaptation. For exemple would you want an Kirikou adaptation where the sorceress Karaba is played by Native American actress ? No because while sorceress don't exist the movie represent a culture where people have a dark skin so it should take actors who can represent said culture, the same apply to European stories.
I guess it's ok for the little mermaid since the remake put it in the Caraïbe instead of Europe and the animated movies was already not faithful to the original tale but in general they don't change the setting and only put non European in an European setting. Also only adapting European stories and just adding non European in it is a lazy way to bring diversity and a bit ethocentric since it imply that stories from non European culture don't deserve to be adapted.

Now Marvel wants to "reboot" the MCU and basically redo everything. It's one thing to reboot a single superhero franchise like Batman and Spider-Man, but rebooting an entire interwoven franchise of multiple movie trilogies seems really dumb to me. I think the idea of passing the torch is great, but they just didn't execute it greatly. Maybe reboot Eternals, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, and other post-endgame heroes who had a bad start, and just leave the past alone. Sorry, but Tony Stark should stay dead. RDJ should never return as Tony Stark, and we don't need anyone else playing Tony Stark

Good analysis, but where is the whole issue of "DEI"? Where is the rejection, by the audience, of the injection of political content fighting against patriarchy, representation of all kinds of people replacing traditional characters? I have this weird feeling that the bad press for this film was kind of staged or that Rachel Ziegler has a TERRIBLE PR team. I don’t even think a fair percentage of the movie was even filmed.
Here’s my stupid theory: all the press is not press about the movie, but rather a way to get a data pool of the mass audience’s reaction. Everything about this film seems inorganic. The sets, the costuming and story choices are not that of a major studio production. The photo of the “dwarves” and Zegler standing in a field doesn’t seem like it came from a film shoot. There are no promotional clips to show the feel or tone of the movie from D23 which is weird. Disney usually does those things for D23. Since Wicked is actually being filmed and made- Disney may springboard on the audience’s favour of Wicked before commencing on their live-action remakes.
And if my theory is wrong, it still doesn’t matter. If the Wicked movie adaption turns out to be a HUGE hit- granted Disney will try to make something to outdo it’s success. But it would the biggest kick in the pants to Disney because Wicked both stage musical and movie already did something better than what they’ve been trying to do with the Disney live-action remakes.
Feel bad for dwarf actors can't find any jobs. Now they rely on CGI just like Wonka and this. Freaking Peter Dinklage contradicted himself after he played iconic dwarf.
The Prince is creepy. In the original Grimm fairy tale, the Prince first sees Snow White in her coffin at the dwarfs' cottage. Even though he thinks she is dead, the Prince offers to buy her. The dwarfs refuse, so the Prince laments that he will die if he can't look upon Snow White. The manipulated dwarfs agree to give the Prince the seemingly dead Snow White as a gift. The Prince's servants carry Snow White's coffin everywhere, because the Prince cannot function without being able to look at the beautiful corpse.
Eventually, the servants become so tired of carrying Old Snowy around that they pull her out of the coffin and hit her. The thrashing causes the poisoned apple in her throat to become dislodged and she wakes up.
The Prince immediately asks a sheepish Snow White to marry him. They are wed the next day.
To everyone demanding that Disney "respect the source material" and keep everything as it was, make sure you demand that the Prince buy Snow White's corpse and carry it around with him as he drools over her loveliness.
Leave Rachel alone. In ten years people will realize she was treated as horrifically as Rebecca Black all over a kid's fairy tale.
I have nothing against Halle, but i wanted to send a message to Disney and chose not to watch the new Little Mermaid. I know ALot of people here in Finland, also did not watch it. And the message that i wanted to send was simple. A classic becomes a classic because people fell in love with the movies original, simple base line, basically Everything that made the movie a movie called Little mermaid. When you change the character itself, the storyline and ideology and even the soundtrack.. that not THE little mermaid anymore. And all of this, fall into Disney, not the actress they hired. But with Snow White, its a whole another story. I would say the first part applies here as well, but then when the cast and the Main Actress came out, bashing the original film and storyline.. That storyline WAS the thing that made Snow white classic in the first place so.. thats just a no for me. And to top it all of, the way this lady responded when people kept sayin this isnt okay.. She just disgusts me. It seems like only SHE is "good enough, educated enough" to give her 'professional opinion' about this.. Well, sweetie. I gotta tell you, the ONE thing that the audience has full authority over is wether they like the movie or not, and wether theyre going to watch it or not. And i am not going to watch it, JUST because of her.
Peter Dinklage seems to have conveniently forgotten that he appeared in the film "Tiptoes" which cast Gary Oldman as a little person, so I guess as recent as 2002 he was welling to swallow his pride for a paycheck.
