I just made my first ever garden grow bags with a few herbs and tomatoes. I don’t need to tell you how addictive it’s been, so I’ve been buying “one more bag” of soil for the last couple weeks. This is such an incredible research for understanding the difference between products when the terminology is slightly different between all of them. It’s rare to find people going deep on any topic on the internet. There are a lot of people repeating the same beginner-level advice, and as someone who always wants to know the “why?” behind things, this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. Thank you.
It is addictive and yep just 1 more bag. I have lots of the short and specific videos like a 1000 lol. So this year it is longer videos, with timestamps, and more in-depth looks a things. Thank you so much for this information. I was being bogged down by so many videos and how to compost and how to make your own potting soil and so forth. You broke this down very well I am now ready to go and buy some peat moss and use my garden soil and I'm also working a little bit of making my own compost with my kitchen scraps and organic matter. But now I can at least go and get some peat moss and I'm glad that you broke it down very well thank you so much

Thanks for teaching me to grow better, Gary. I was gifted two glavanized raised beds, approx 60 x 30 x 30". Using what I learned on your channel I was able to fill both of them for a lot less than it could have been. I started by filling the bottom 1/3 with maple chips from a huge tree a tornado took out in my yard two years ago. I bought the cheapest garden soil I could get and mixed it with some locally sourced composted horse manure. Because I bought more than 20 bags, they were $7.40 per 2cu ft bag. I layered in organic granular fertilizer and the top 8" was just composted horse manure and a little fertilizer. It's still pretty cold here in central WI, but I'm going to be seeding some cole crops in there tomorrow and getting my first round of peas in the ground.
That should be great stuff. Good luck! Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C

A terrific video Gary, clearly showing the bagged soils and explaining their contents. I wish peat moss/coco coir was that inexpensive down here in Australia. It's probably around 5 times as much. Still a must-add when making mixes though. I hope this video stops people from wasting money on that Miracle junk. Cheers!

Thank you for making this video as I am one of the victims of this Kellogg tomfoolery container mix and adding bags of cow manure , mushroom compost trying to make a good container mix that really hasn't worked out all that great for the money I spent , Seeds don't do well , seedlings do just okay . This was my first year getting back into gardening and growing my own vegetables after about 15 years away from the hobby , I will not be making this same mistake next year now that I am armed with this new knowledge and understanding of what's really needed vs what is basically marketing tactics to get you buying their sub par products . This will indeed save me hundreds of dollars but most importantly the information & knowledge provided here is priceless

@@pilsplease7561 how big though? a 1sqft bag still means you're paying $8 for 2 sqft while as gary shows making your own with peat moss and your own soil comes out to $2.30 for 2 sqft. that's almost 4x cheaper than what you're buying
Since I am pretty new to gardening, I watched hundreds of videos, took notes, and bought a small pick up truck load of old wood chips, some Black Kow manure, Black Kow top soil, a couple of bales of Peat Moss, and began a couple of compost piles. I had just a small bit of topsoil here, and I used that as well. My soil here is majorly red clay, and sand. So we built raised beds. Thank you, Gary for being my gardening how-to hero, ❤

This is so helpful!!!! Where I live Thier are bazaar stores and one year I bought Thier grow bags. The soil was so dark I was very pleased until I got it into my pots and watered it...... Running out of the bottom was a horrible black stinky liquid. It stained my garden tile. I realised what the smell was.... Oil old dirty motor oil. They had literally mixed cheap dirt with spent motor oil. I had used plastic pots all were ruined. But because of the nature of the store I had no redress. It's a great store I h e had really handy items for low cost there but not soil.
I bet. They can mix anything in the bags. Good luck this year. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD

This was such a timely video. My husband and I debated buying the bags of "raised bed soil" from Costco this weekend. I already have two bags of peat moss and basic soil, only need to purchase the leaf grow. Gary as always your videos are practical for home growers.

This is exactly what I've been looking for! Our raised beds keep sinking every year. My husband got Miracle Grow raised bed soil. It was nothing hardly but WOOD CHIPS. When it rains what little SOIL OR DIRT (don't know what else to call it) gets washed down and you're left with a layer of wood. My spinach & lettuce, which I planted from seed) did not want to grow in it. So, I told him to get me some potting mix. The one I had didn't have any wood chunks in it. Well, he went and got a different brand at a different store and lo and behold - it's full of wood chunks chips and pieces of branches and other mysterious stuff. Some of it even smells like sewage - definitely not an "earthy smell"

Our county landfill, here in TN, gives us our leaves and even loads them in the pickup, for free. We water them well, turn every four days, and in a month have free leaf mold - we know all that is in it! Good video of comparing bagged soils. It would be great if companies told you the truth on their products. Here is what I have found through 25 years of gardening: All bagged mixes sold at the box stores contain zero nutrients. In other words, they play games with people's ignorance! I want the best vegetables that I can grow, so I use a pro mix product with Mycorrhizae in it. I immediately noticed the difference when I switched to this. We make our own compost in the garden which enhances growth of my plants. If I had clay soil I would add peat to mixture. Great soil =great plants!

I love your videos, Gary and always learn something new. I would love it if you could help promote alternatives to peat. As many are becoming more aware, peat moss is formed so slowly it is not really considered a renewable resource. Peat bogs are a major carbon sink. Its harvesting releases that carbon, contributing to climate change. Conversely, climate change may also help destroy peat bogs. I wish all these garden soil producers would come up with an alternative, but in the meantime, let's make our own! I looked into it, and decided to use compost instead. You can also use shredded paper. Some people use coconut coir, but I'm wondering about the carbon footprint of shipping it to our clime.
Thanks. The alternative to peat is compost. There really isn't much more. Coco coir just isn't as green as we are told. Forest get cut down lots of water and energy to process it and carbon to send it over here. But compost, especially leaf compost is the best. I will continue to promote that. Great video cost breakdown! Lowe’s Evergreen soil products have never let me down. Cheapest consistent products I have found. If you make your own soil I’ve found it’s better the second or third year. Much faster than amending clay soil inground but still takes time. Make this soil recipe then add compost spring and fall growing. Keep beds covered with plants or i use pine needles (free from my yard) or old straw(chickens) less weeds more moisture less watering. Trying Coop Poop(slow release organic) from Ace Hardware, Triple 13 and Agro Thrive(Amazon) this year. Agro Thrive made tomato seedling stems thick and strong. Praying for a bountiful year for all 🙏 😊

1 minute and 45 seconds into your video, and I'm already feeling very appreciative towards you for putting this together and sharing!!! So, SO awesome of you to have done all this work simply just to showcase and compare all of these products & help your viewers to learn and benfit [greatly] from it all (without having to each do it all ourselves...or alternatively face being ripped off/not getting what we're looking for...neither of which are very appealing.. lol.) ▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ ▪︎ This year I have to buy products to bulk up the volume of my planting areas & add some ammendments to better my soil quality overall, all due to years of me totally neglecting my garden/backyard ecosystem. (sadface) All of the [untrustworthy😒] products being marketed out there are soo confusing and downright irritating; figuring out the smartest [&most economical] way to go about this has already proven to take way too much of my time and effort, resulting in me actually falling behind on getting things into the ground for this year's warm season!!! no bueno!!!! These decisions are KILLiN ME!! ..lol.. so THE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH you've done and the & VALUABLE INFORMATION you've so kindly shared with us is going to make A NOTABLE DIFFERENCE in not just my garden this season, but for many seasons to come, I'm certain!! ❤ im super grateful for channels like yours. So, honestly- Ty, Thank you, THANK YOU!!! Cheers!! &wish me luck...?😅
That's my goal. I want people to have a good experience gardening. Filling the beds can be so expensive and the products arent really that good. Plus you can save a lot by just making it yourself and it's better. Have a great year. And please subscribe if you havent.
I do what you recommend with the sphagnum peat moss, top soil, and earth from my yard or my own compost. Because I grow food, I enrich the soil mix with blood meals, bone meals, and chicken poop. All organic. My husband was agog with how thrifty he finds my methods to be, lol. Cheers!

Thank you Gary. This video was very informative especially for me over the pond (UK. ) We are at a disadvantage here, as peat moss is banned,. So to get a half decent mix I have to make my own compost.
Cheers. Compost is the best but it can take time and it takes space. Good luck. Canada gives us our peat moss. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD
This is a great video! You saved me from buying Kellogg again. I'm switching to Vigoro Garden Soil now because I like that it has more soil in it and is around the same price.
I would take your make your own mix and then process thru a 3 bin/bucket worm bin system. Out comes some premium soil 😃. For those reading this worm bins are super easy; keep between 50 to 80 deg F, keep feeding with non citrus veggie food scraps, keep super moist.

Great video Gary, loved it. This yr. I am getting a ton of top soil and a 1/2 ton of mushroom compost. I will mix these with some Peat moss. My beds are not as full as when I made them, so it is time to refill them

Thank you so much for crunching all the numbers. I just moved into a house with a garden with raised beds. I had to figure out how much I needed. I mixed 3/1 Peat and Black Cow/worm castings, thanks to you and I mixed that with the soil in the beds. I also started my own Red Wiggler Bins and compost piles. You have taught me so much already. This is my second garden ever and first time starting everything from seed. Everyone is doing amazing and I am so thankful to you and your videos.

Thank you so much for doing this video. I grow in bins and bags and never know what im suppose to do for the soil for the next yr. Throwing it all out........that seemed way too extreme for me. You've taught me so much.....and this video on soil is a great help. Thanks again. 😊🇨🇦

Wonderful info - thank you! I’ve long suspected all the bagged material is basically the same stuff…but the “recycled” ingredients make me a bit hesitant. Also the farm debris - I worry about whatever antibiotics have been given to the farm animals showing up in my garden ground…. I might be too nervous to be a real gardener! And that dang bale of peat is just waaaaay too much for me to use in a lifetime. My neighbors all have “garden teams” who take care of their properties - so I can’t even find somebody to share a bale with!🌺💙
It just isn't good stuff in there besides the peat and sometimes coco coir. Peat bales are expensive. HD are like 3 cubic feet, some places have 2.2 cubic feet but sometimes that bale is expensive as HDs larger one. Great video, Gary. I came to this very same realization late last season and started making my own mix this spring, which for all intents and purposes is fairly similar to your mix recipe (I'm only doing containers) - I use the same bulk peat moss and buy perlite in 4ft³ bags and mix in some homemade or store bought compost. I also saved the mix I made for my autumn crops and put them into 15 gallon trash cans. While shifting through it and amending it this spring I found a bounty of red oak acorns that germinated over winter, which was an added bonus! Lice love your channel and I've also shopped your store. Cheers from just over the Mason-Dixon

Thanks for this video. I can totally relate and agree with what you’re saying. Except…I just got a killer season end deal on bagged compost and garden soil along with mulch and peat moss. $6.60 for a bag of Peat! $1.95 for 1.5 cu ft of compost! I just couldn’t pass it up. Normally though, way too expensive. I’ll make my own. 😂
If it is a deal, that is worth it. Sales are good. Vigoro .. is the price range for me. I can’t afford nothing real expensive, but I actually mix it with Coco core and my own compost that I’ve been successfully making for two years now I probably enough for a bed, but I kind of mix it all together and amend put some amendments in there and I got it so I did that today. As a matter of fact, I ended a new bed to start green beans, bush beans think I put it in. It’s a big big bed so I think I put about 16 plants or so. I have not been successful with green beans or any green beans so I’m hoping that it works out. I’m only four years into gardening but I’ve been getting better and better at things. I’ve gotten carrots down really well.🌱🌱🌱 I do appreciate your videos and some of your classes that they do videos doing this together. It’s a great accomplishment the carrots taste so so much better the potatoes stage so much better homegrown onions taste better. I have learned to appreciate my garden and I appreciate you Gary. 🌱🌱🌱
It is the cheaper price. Yeah just try direct seeding the beans again and see how it goes. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C

You can dry a lot of this stuff in one warm sunny day. Get large contractor bags, slit bottom and one side to double the size. Dump the bag and spread soil to thin layer. Use a rake every hour or two to expose still damp soil to light and air. Or use a tarp for larger drying area. If you don't get the dryness desired in one day, slide the bag to another area to keep from killing grass

Cheers and good luck this. year.

Good luck!

This was my first year getting back into gardening and growing my own vegetables after about 15 years away from the hobby ,
I will not be making this same mistake next year now that I am armed with this new knowledge and understanding of what's really needed vs what is basically marketing tactics to get you buying their sub par products . This will indeed save me hundreds of dollars but most importantly the information & knowledge provided here is priceless
Kelloggs is just not good. And any inexpensive water soluble fertilizer will help get your plants off to a great start too.

Do yourself and the Earth a favor, and go organic.
I have Kellogg's story. To long to go into, lets just say, when I called the company and asked where did they find organic plastic, metal and glass? Did some research and found out gross crap about Kellogg's. They gave me a full refund and I told Rahul, to yell out back and tell the guys to turn up the grinding machine, the shit was getting through.
They just are not regulated.

You did a great job of explaining the real cost of these products. I have concluded that most potting soil, by itself, is junk. I took the last of my potting soil and mixed it with garden soil to start some seeds this year before I knew about this video .
And it is expensive!

The potting mix at lowes for me is like $4 a bag its so cheap its cheaper than making it. So when I pot plants I buy it.
@@pilsplease7561what mix? 😮

Finally straight talk on the true about garden dirt!!! I happened to get 30 bags of Miracle Grow garden soil on sale for $1.50 a .75 u ft bag. I hope I understood the video right. I will mix equal parts not of the garden soil, peat moss and leaf grow. It's at least a place to start the garden this year. Thanks for all the info.
Yeah that is right. The garden soil, is the earth. 1/3 earth, 1/3 peat, 1/3 leaf gro. It's a good base.

Hi Garry! I got up really early as I was ready to get back to my garden project, then I happen to watch this vlogof yours and really caught my attention. Iam sort of semi-retired and kinda really tight with our budget. Well, to cut the long story short, this vlog just gave me a feeling of new spirit! You are such a huge blessing and I have learned so much from this vlog! So clear and really helpful! I immediately subscribed right after I repeatedly watch this one. I will be so looking forward to watching more of you vlogs, your channel and I wish you more success and helping more gardeners and encourage more future gardeners! More power to you and God Bless!
So glad to help and this is a great way to manage a budget. That is one of my goals because there is so much commercialism to really suck away are money. Let me know if you have questions. Cheers.

Yep. The wood is not good and impact a garden as you experienced.

Our county landfill, here in TN, gives us our leaves and even loads them in the pickup, for free. We water them well, turn every four days, and in a month have free leaf mold - we know all that is in it! (can sprinkle the leaves with a little blood meal for faster results) I get about 800 pounds per trip.
That is perfect!

Good video of comparing bagged soils. It would be great if companies told you the truth on their products.
Here is what I have found through 25 years of gardening: All bagged mixes sold at the box stores contain zero
nutrients. In other words, they play games with people's ignorance! I want the best vegetables that I can grow, so
I use a pro mix product with Mycorrhizae in it. I immediately noticed the difference when I switched to this.
We make our own compost in the garden which enhances growth of my plants. If I had clay soil I would add peat to mixture.
Great soil =great plants!
You are right.

This year I have to buy products to bulk up the volume of my planting areas & add some ammendments to better my soil quality overall, all due to years of me totally neglecting my garden/backyard ecosystem. (sadface)
All of the [untrustworthy😒]
products being marketed out there are soo confusing and downright irritating; figuring out the smartest [&most economical] way to go about this has already proven to take way too much of my time and effort, resulting in me actually falling behind on getting things into the ground for this year's warm season!!!
no bueno!!!!

Thank you.....

I did the same thing like you, but I usually add a few cup of perlite and my own previous year soil that already dark and it turned out great.
That works.

I’ve gotten carrots down really well.🌱🌱🌱
I do appreciate your videos and some of your classes that they do videos doing this together.

Thanks.

Vigoro is my go to potting mix for potted plants it works great. Also costs $4 a bag here. I use it in some small pots for lettuce which grows really well in it.
It was the better mix here in my opinion.
