I saw this Herb Reed Platters line-up twice in Sparks NV (the Nugget Hotel/Casino). I've seen many Platters groups through the years. Some were terrible, some were quite good. I saw Tony Williams' replacement (Sonny Turner) numerous times (phenomenal entertainer!) , Johnny Barnes was a Tony Williams clone (he sang for awhile withe Zola, Robi, and Lynch in an off-shoot), and Paul Robi's version with Elmer Hopper (very good tenor!), but none were like Tony Funches!
Funches, live in concert, did not sound any different than the original recordings - left me shaking my head in amazement. It was truly stunning! Herb Reed lost a great voice when Funches left. He never found another decent lead. That fellow with him in the PBS Doo Wop performances was flat and overly-vibrato'd to where it was unbearable. I sure wish there was more on UA-cam featuring Tony Funches.
No Tony Williams not Platters, tenor here is good, but Tony was great. Like to here how's close he comes to Tony with "My Dream"
Tony played today in Berlin, MA. A great performer and entertainer with a powerful voice. If I closed my eyes I would think I was listening to the original group.

He sang lead for Herb Reeds Platters for at least 12 years. I had first seen him in the 90s, didnt realize he went back this far with Herbs group. Yeah, Tony is sensational! He still performs doing a Platters tribute act.
