i'm 47 and writing from macau in 2024, i'm an 80s kid who grew up in singapore and though i ended up in macau decades later, i can still remember vividly the white DM best of 85-89 cassette tape i used to have in singapore, my god... my memory gate just flooded open with this song along with precious visions of the past, thankful for all the music legends of the 80s and youtube

50 now and living in London (originally from Norway/Japan) but spent 10 years in Singapore as a child (80-85 and 87-92) and remember how darned popular DM suddenly seemed with all the "local" teens around the time of Music for the Masses, circa 1990?
Like there was an explosion of kids dressed in black and white only hanging round in town on weekends listening to their music.
I was more into The Cure and goth bands like The Sisters of Mercy and The Mission, which we all traded tapes of from other international students who went back to the UK etc in the holidays. We had so little access to music videos and live music and even some classic records but people shared everything, tape to tape if it wasn't readily available to buy. I bought all the tapes "properly" once I could after moving to London for university and went to see all the bands I'd loved.

This song is appealing and pure genius for numerous reasons: the approach of sincerity with the lyrics and the clever use of sheer simplicity to state a powerful message about greed, corruption, and materialism in the post-modern world, the wonderful mixture of instrumentation used (Gore's a great composer), and, of course, yes, the vocalization of lead singer Dave Gahan (such a beautiful male voice).

Happy 40th Birthday to Everything Counts. Forty years ago today, on Monday July 11, 1983, the song was released. I really like the early work of Depeche Mode and this piece in particular. Today I saw the video for the first time. Berlin in the eighties. My city! How cool! In four decades, the boys have come a long way. A few days ago, in July 2023, they played twice in the Olympic Stadium. And I am sure that Depeche Mode will not lose its connection to Berlin in the future either. Many thanks and congratulations from Germany!

Proper musicians and songwriters usually are and express what they see and feel musicly and lyrically. Unfortunately the present pile of putrid horse manure passed off as music today is a sad indictment of the music industry. Corporate shills and manufacted pop puppets who have never put the spade work in playing the pub and club circuits and will be forgotten in less than a year.

Yes when this came out Alan was probably better looking and Dave was in his prime in the late 80's (looks wise). Fletch was also a good looking bloke. Martin seemed the least good looking, although he would dress the most punk looking. I really liked Daves style of the white jeans, crop top and leather jacket that he would normally wear

But I agree with your opinion. They all looked good in their own way and had their own style. That’s why they were so appealing along with the music of course. A very stylish group!
Most British bands have a sense of style and flair anyway.
And I don’t like people going on stage in jeans or ordinary looking. A band should put on a show and look good together. That’s just my view.

В классе были любители Депеш Мод, если точнее 1991 год из более состоятельных семей, а большинство класса,тогда слушало Шатунова и Хоя, одно другому не мешало

    I’m
37 years or age, born in the 80s. But man I truly wish my teens/twenties happened during this era of epic music. Depeche Mode are just LEGENDS. To those who have seen them live are their prime and lived through this era of music, my hats off and congrats, I am
    Jealous

I am 26 years old, Japanese, and I first heard this song in "GTA vice city" when I was a kid, and I have been listening to it ever since🫡
This song makes me feel nostalgic!
