Western-style gyms and tanning studios did not catch on in China, (particularly Hong Kong), because strong bodies and tans are the product of hard work outdoors. Who would spend money and time to look like a peasant, rather than a scholar or mandarin?

Roosevelt and Rhee was essentially trained in politics by the US government while living there during his first exile in the 40's. The US government created a monster and created many of the issues in Korea. Then swooped in after the war to pretend to "help" rebuild the country. They were playing political chess with peoples lives. They still are.

Yes in some countries such as North Korea, being fat meant being rich. However I find that in America, poor people tend to be more fat, because junk food which contribute to weight gain is cheap, while healthy foods such as lean meats, organics, etc. tend to be more expensive.

It used to be that way in the west too, the more food insecure, the more round the people they thought were attractive. Men for being wealthy enough to have a belly and women with ample everything. There was even a corset that gave you a bit of belly for the women and the men had a rounded shape to their clothes too. But being really obese was still always thought of as strange. I bet the hungrier society is, the fatter can still be attractive. Few places have been hungry for as long and constantly as north Korea.
I do value the relative modesty of North Koreans compared to most other people globally. Many North Koreans should be more modest but from everything I've seen, North Koreans generally dress more modestly than Non-North Koreans on average. As a Catholic, I consider that the be preferable, & particularly for women, they appear to be more natural than many South Korean women because they generally don't change their appearance through the use of plastic surgery.
In Victorian England black teath and overweight bodies were attractive because it implies you have the wealth to eat sugar. Now we have enough food and sugar in the country that the opposite is true because it shows you look after your health. Generally speaking, when North American girls reach around age 35, their physical standards for men change. They care more about money (Does he have a high paying job?) and property (Does he have a house?). I’m almost 40, and I noticed this phenomenon in many westernized-countries. I think NK girls are forced to grow up quickly, so they mentally skip their 20s way of thinking and quickly enter their mid-30s way of thinking. Sadly, in westernized countries, girls don’t “grow up” until they are almost 40, but by that point it’s too late. Guys don’t want them anymore.
To be brutally honest, it's hard for men to see such women as anything other than gold diggers. Especially if that man was getting no attention and a little bit of abuse until he's 35 and has money.
