  • Pro-style ranges are all the rage. They look great but can take a big bite out of your budget. We picked two Italian ranges that are cheaper than their competitors, a Bertazzoni and a Verona. We tested to see whether they are hot or not.

    To anyone reading this, we bought the Verona Classic dual fuel oven/range and absolutely love it. We cook a LOT and have had no problems with it at all. So, I have to think much of this is subjective (or funded by Viking ;-)). I guess this unit could be considerably less functional, since it is a different model, but I doubt it.

    opening the oven door is a good idea, many people use it as storage and this would prevent it.

    The Ignition on the Bertazzoni range is not a problem it is a safety feature, it means that
    the gas will not stay on unless the fame is lit, it is the law in England that you have to have this type of stove if you live in an apartment to avoid the risk of the gas being left on and causing an explosion.
    Oven size.
    You do not normally need a huge oven most of the time it may only have one
    item in it, all you are doing is wasting vast amount's of gas heating an empty space.

      Agreed. I cook my Christmas turkey in a small oven and always have done - it's what we're used to here in the UK. It doesn't present a problem.

    This is about the Verona 36' Stainless Steel oven, I bout this oven a little over 3 years ago, it was working fine except when the oven was being used, it make a noise. About three months ago the oven stopped working, I called AHS to send someone to fix it, two different companies, 4 trips, changing the clock, some electronic part in the back with no success. Today they came for the 5th time to replaced the Oven switch and found out that the thermostat is not working.
    Called Verona tech support, no help, looked on the internet, no diagram for Verona Ovens.
    If you're thinking about buying a Verona Oven, DON'T BUY ONE.
    Additionally, the pots do not set flat on the burners. When simmering, only the middle part of the pot is heating so you constantly have to watch.
    It's no wonder that this oven got 25 out of 100 from consumer report. The lowest score.

    These ranges have change a lot since 2014. Bertazzoni has adapted its Master series to meet Americans demand for bigger ovens.

    sorry, you need to talk about performance, not standard american comfort conveniences. the bertazzoni is an excellent oven. true, it has a small cavity. they can get rid of the storage compartment for the extra space. i agree. but when it comes to performance it is incredible. you can simmer as low as you want, or bring flame up to 19,000 btu for quick boils or wok cooking. i like that you have to open the oven door to light it. the double glass pane locks in the heat, so opening the door allows oxigen in for that first light. just get used to it. my coffee tastes better, searing is great, having a convection on a 24" is super great. cr needs to up their standards to include true quality and performance.

    My gas/LP SMEG (SCD 91MFX5) works very well. We've used it daily for 6 years with zero problems. Cooking for holidays is a treat.

  • @sav7568

    The bit about the poor Verona simmering has nothing to do with the stove. It is caused by using a pot with a thin base. Use a pot with a heavy base and the problem will solve itself. Anyone wanting to regularly cook a 20 lb turkey in a Bertazzoni oven could always buy a stove fitted with the bigger oven rather than complain about the smaller one like this guy. Taint hard. He has all the look of someone trying to steer customers towards another brand.

    wow... 3 THOUSAND dollars for a stove and people call it trash. OK first of all, it's 1 thousand dollars or less in Europe. Second of all - these are AWESOME pieces of kit for the price. They are way more than the average consumer ever needs. If anything, you could use these in a food truck or a restaurant.

    Looked at Bertazzoni today. Slightly lesser level than this one. These days manufacturers present us with a stainless steal flashy piece of garbage. Large knobs that mimic Viking or Wolf but you pull them off and check the back of them and many are chromed plastic with sleeved parts that Will break. The burners are complete junk. The Bertazzoni was moderately priced at $2,499 with a free range hood promotion but salesman tried to steer me away to a $5000 range. My heart is set on the $5k ranges because the burners are superior... usually. I am torn between affordability vs quality. I really want to get the Viking at near $5k and never look back. I know I'll be happier years from now when it still works perfectly and the knobs are still intact.

    Can anyone recommend an oven that uses absolutely NO electrical components? My current range/oven is an old Gaffers & Sattler from the late 1970's, which I suppose was owned by Magic Chef.... and then absorbed by Maytag. All it uses are standing pilot lights and I can cook, even in a power outage. Can any modern oven do that? Work in a power outage?

    Be warned!!! Bertazzoni is the worst brand of range I have ever seen! That wonderful thermocoupler they brag about is an ongoing problem. Ours was replaced 3 times and my oven will not light AGAIN! I've been told that they no longer make this piece and so that means I have to replace the entire range. It's only 5 years old...for a fairly expensive range, that is absolutely ridiculous! Contacting the company showed only that they couldn't possibly care less about their customers after the sale. Pick another brand!!!
    BTW, my story is repeated over and over among other owners!

    • @goose79335
      @goose79335 6 років тому

      Who ever told you that they stopped making the part or that they couldn't replace it was full of crap. I have serviced ovens that were 5-8yrs old many times. Yes, the thermocouples break and when they do that burner becomes non functional but is repairable.

    Only gripe I have with this review is when he perpetuates the myth that searing meat will "lock in the juices." Careful testing has shown that meat that is seared does not actually retain more moisture. This has been shown by weighing pieces of meat before and after cooking.

    terrible review, I purchased a 30" Bertazzoni and it works flawless, the stove works like it was designed to.

    • @MichelleCollyer
      @MichelleCollyer 6 років тому +4

      Same here. I have a 30" Bert all gas and it's excellent. The dual burner is a three in one - small ring for delicate work, like chocolate; large ring is great for large skillets; together they bring a kettle or pot of pasta water to the boil in just a couple of minutes. Another thing the reviewer didn't mention are the grate inserts for simmering and wok. Their are completely interchangeable with all rings and create even more options for heat and use. Yes, the oven is small but I knew that when I bought it. Bertazzoni is one of the highest rated ovens for heat - both constant temperature and lack of heat loss. These are features I wanted in an oven and gladly chose them over square foot space. All in all, a very negative review from someone who didn't understand how the Bertazzoni works.
