It just kills me all the music critics on board..Ringo's this, Pete's that. George's solo sounds is this and that...You know what - they were kids with no formal training, no great sounds systems...etc, etc. They pretty much taught themselves to play and created a new sound in the process. So let's stop wandering is Ringo was the better drummer..comparing George to other lead guitarists..because they set the standard for ALL bands to follow.
Grew up in Liverpool and saw The Beatles in the Cavern mainly at lunch time do's. Their playing was raw and real not the crap that is turned out now. You should have seen them at the Hamburg KaiserKellar, that where they learned the business. They were fantastic days and I'm so glad that I lived through it. I pity all todays teens with MP3 and the Internet, you miss so much about real live music.
It's fantastic to hear this Cavern rehearsal version of One After 909, I didn't even know it existed! Listening to the snare fills, it's definitely Ringo on drums - Pete Best's snare fills were considerably more primitive, and the accented bass drum thumps are pure Ringo. Thanks for posting, Juan!
They also have recordings of this song they did in Hamburg on their first visit sometime between Aug. 17 and Nov. 30, 1960 during rehearsals with Pete Best and Stu Sutcliffe. This one was from Sept. 1962 shortly after Ringo became the drummer.
I'm thinking im shit at guitar cause i cant do well.....but they had 11 years to practice before they became famous! so ill keep trying my best........BEATLES RULE!!
Lennon just had that something to his voice. He was the yin to Paul's yang. Really, with the technology, it is amazing that this can sound so good. Is this 1962?
wpollock1 It was due to Twist And Shout on the Please Please Me album. It put so much stress on his voice since he was sick while singing the song. After that song, he sang differently through out The Beatles.
My baby said she's trav'ling on the one after 909 I said move over honey I'm traveling on that line I said move over once, move over twice Come on baby don't be cold as ice. Said she's trav'ling on the one after 909. I begged her not to go and I begged her on my bended knees, You're only fooling around, you're fooling around with me. I said move over once, move over twice Come on baby don't be cold as ice. Said she's trav'ling on the one after 909. I got my bag, run to the station Railman says you've got the the wrong location I got my bag, run right home Then I find I've got the number wrong Well she said she's trav'ling on the one after 909 I said move over honey I'm traveling on that line I said move over once, move over twice Come on baby don't be cold as ice. Said she's trav'ling on the one after 909. Said she's trav'ling on the one after 9-0, Said she's trav'ling on the one after 9-0, Said she's trav'ling on the one after 909.
This is indisputably Ringo on drums. The full rehearsal tape also includes 'I Saw Her Standing There', which wasn't written until late October / early November 1962 and finished by John and Paul December 1962. Pete Best was sacked from the band in August '62, before 'Standing There' was written. Then there's the fact that the drumming sounds exactly like Ringo, and not Pete Best...
Very nice and sweet photos, I;ve never seen most of them before, Thank You!! And Ringo is so funny at the picture 2:37 :)))), every time of their musical career the Beatles were the best!!
Why haven't I heard this before??? This is fantastic. Why didn't they realease this on the Anthology albums?? There is still ton of "officialy" unreleased Beatles material. The Anthologies could easily have several more releases. Come on EMI. Get off your @sses.
Excelente este video por la cantidad de fotos, para mí inéditas, veo; y con Pete (en batería) que luego fue cambiado por el movido y alegre Ringo Star; como se les prendían las lindas mujeres de entonces!
Today i heard this very early version the first time. I am so glad to hear it. Young Beatles were so raw. I cannot say what is better, 1960 or 1970 version.
I see from the credits above that Stu is listed as participating. I've never heard a recording before with him included. The simple bass line makes that seem plausible. It's usually said that he couldn't play, but the notes here, while basic, are correct.

@tauroscorp I agree with you - I was there in the early days - they were always one of the top bands around Merseyside - don't forget they had hit records in 1962 and 1963 in the UK before they went to the U.S.
The Cavern Club rehearsals are all Pete Best too. Remember, once Ringo joined, the Beatles already had a contract with EMI-there would be no reason to tape rehearsals.
No, this is Ringo. Ringo confirmed that it's him while being played the tapes when he was interviewed by Allan Kozinn of 'The New York Times' in about 1992.
@yowzephyr Difference is that they are trying out their own material, garage bands do covers. Anyone can play Smoke on the Water, go do your own songs and it's totally different
It's great that you included so many photos of the early Beatles when Pete Best was their drummer, then transitioned images of Ringo. Some Beatles fans like to slam Pete Best, but I am among those who truly appreciate him. They were all still in their teens, and Pete was good enough to help them get to the launch pad. He was with them in Hamburg when they were grinding out endless gigs, sleeping on cots behind a porn cinema, and he helped John fight off the thugs who were beating the brains out of Stu Sutcliffe. He was (and still is) a stand up guy. Ringo is the fab, and better drummer, but why shit on Pete Best? He played an important part in their history, and I consider him THE original Beatles drummer.
@novadrian There are two outtakes on the Anthology: 1 where Paul stops because he is having trouble with the Bass; and the 2nd where John starts singing at the wrong time after the solo. Then there is the full 63' version.
This number was recorded again for the "Let It Be" album in 1969 (with Ringo on drums). This original version was done back in 1960 or 1961 when Pete Best was drummer, with John and Paul on vocals. Pete Best never sang during his tenure with The Beatles, but Ringo did when he performed lead vocals in "I Wanna Be Your Man", "What Goes On", "Act Naturally", "Yellow Submarine", "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't Pass Me By", "Goodnight", and "Octopus's Garden".
Yes, the drummer pictured here is Pete Best and the drums are so pitiful on this record that it has to be Pete. Give him credit; he did a lot of work for the Beatles, but not musically.
Never heard of any such thing as Cavern Club rehearsal tapes. This is probably an outtake from Abbey Road studios in '63 or '64 and made to sound like it was from the Cavern Club. If I'm wrong, please provide citations, dates, etc.

The posted video, "40 years of history in 3 minutes" is a Beatles celebration with performance of GET BACK and GLASS ONION while re-visiting key moments in history. Enjoy.
One of John's earliest sounds so much better than rather than the very limp version recorded during the Let It Be sessions when John really had no more interest in the Beatle set up and makes the once lively number sound bland and worn out. He went through the motions as Paul had organised the filming but his heart wasn't in it any more.
It just kills me all the music critics on board..Ringo's this, Pete's that. George's solo sounds is this and that...You know what - they were kids with no formal training, no great sounds systems...etc, etc. They pretty much taught themselves to play and created a new sound in the process. i just discovered my special ability: listen to the Bealtes non stop
The Beatles were without doubt a true 'magic band'!
What a great version. I understand Lennon / McCartney wrote this song when they were in the late teens. Amazing !
Grew up in Liverpool and saw The Beatles in the Cavern mainly at lunch time do's. Their playing was raw and real not the crap that is turned out now. You should have seen them at the Hamburg KaiserKellar, that where they learned the business.

The most badass song of all time !!

1962 or 1963 I would put it at.
Yes it is 1962
And don't forget the versions from 1960 (terrible audio, but still), and the 63 EMI version.
wpollock1 yeah, but this is in the studio

Hey guys the drummer at 0;12 is called Tommy Moore. He was the Silver Beetles drummer from April to June 1960. At that time hes was about 35 years
thanks for loading, Great set of photos also.
The drummer is Ringo (just a short time in the Beatles): Cavern Club rehearsal recordings; probably October 1962.
Beatles for freakin ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this pure, raw Beatles sound! Did they evolve or what!!!!
or what
You can't. This is incredible! Thanks for posting. Some great pics of the lads too.
Love the photo at 1:33--they look like they're having so much damn fun! (well, except for Pete..)
I like Ringo better.
Great vocals on this!

So great to hear the origins of the song !
You can tell by the pics that everyone was having a good time in those days. And no screaming fans, thank God, just people who enjoyed the music.
George is on!
I love this song!!!
Very nice and sweet photos, I;ve never seen most of them before, Thank You!! And Ringo is so funny at the picture 2:37 :)))), every time of their musical career the Beatles were the best!!

Yes, it's true. When I'm 64 was also an early song which they "furnished" and put on Sgt Pepper. :)
WHAT A SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's a very similar version to this on the anthology highlights album, except much better quality

god I love his bass 0:27
Harmonies -- hell yes.

Hey, no its not. The drummer pictured here is Pete Best. for sure.
Yes, the drummer pictured here is Pete Best and the drums are so pitiful on this record that it has to be Pete. Give him credit; he did a lot of work for the Beatles, but not musically.
QUE BUENA PRIMERA VEZ LA ESCUCHO SUENA VACAN!!! AQUÍ SON MAS ADELANTADOS A SU TIEMPO
Does anyone know what happend to Hank, the orginal trombone player? He was only with the band for a short time, but wow could he play.
keep playing.
The bass is being played by McCartney here. Sutcliffe was in Hamburg at this time.
Upsiditus7 Stu was DEAD at this time

yes!!!
A prelude to "I saw her standing there"
I love this version better than the one on Let it be. I wonder what open reel deck had the chance to record this. and where are the original tapes!
Dioses!!!
i don't know if anyone noticed, but the solo george plays is the one from i saw her standing there
This was a cavern rehearsal with Ringo a little after he had joined the band.
Was this with Best or Ringo? Sounds like Ringo to me.
Pete Best's Drumming is RAW...
