      4:25 in the first bridge the pressure/arrow points down and opposite forces balance out. But why the arrow points up in the cable-stayed-bridge and not down? Pillar takes the weight of the cables down and not up. So I'm missing something.

    @3:40 - The design shown and discussed is NOT a "suspension bridge". It is a 'cable-stayed bridge'.
    A cable-stayed bridge has the deck connected DIRECTLY to the top(s) of the tower(s), usually in many places (as seen in the video). These cables are all at different angles, depending on their distance from the tower.
    A suspension bridge has cables strung BETWEEN towers and the deck is connected to these cables, NOT directly to the towers. The cables between the deck and the supporting cables are all vertical.
    🍌🙂

    • @solapowsj25
      @solapowsj25 Рік тому

      Rantings? These are not engineering designs by any chance, but for introducing the concepts to students.
      When it comes to engineering design, the representation includes 3-D and internal structure with fine details which surely cannot be shown here.
      This is certainly a very useful video 🎥.

    • @antonomaseapophasis5142
      @antonomaseapophasis5142 Рік тому

      My effort to explain the difference between cable-stayed and suspension is to use the examples of a tent with a pole in the middle, and a laundry line.
      The laundry line has clothing suspended which you could imagine being attached to a plank at the bottom. The plank is suspended.
      A pole in the middle of a tent is held vertical by means of strings (cables) attached to stakes around the periphery & by the fabric of the tent, all of which stay the pole. Now imagine the floor of the tent being held up by the cable-stayed pole.

      @antonomaseapophasis5142 Рік тому

      @@HeinrichDixon I think I would add your point about cable-stayed cables being at different angles, at different points
      And suspension cables being vertical
      In fact the idea of my explanation occurred when on a tour by boat on the Hudson narrated by an engineer for the Cuomo bridge at Tarrytown.
      He kind of skipped over an explanation of cable-stayed vs suspension (George Washington bridge) because he had been tasked with the tour guide job at the last moment, and his colleagues, from their experience, assured him he was not going to be able to explain the two concepts.

    I'm not sure about bridges, but many old domes over buildings are actually parabolas, because people didn't know better back then. And they still hold, because the shape is a good enough approximation.
    BTW, VSauce has taught me that it's called "Brachistochrone", what's the difference?

      Not surprising, the more time you spend looking down at your phone or a screen, the more you have that forward head posture, forward shoulders, etc.
      Very hard to correct, takes a lot of discipline coupled with good strategies.
