I am an elderly Japanese. As a child, I lived in the far north countryside. My hobby is listening to overseas radio broadcasts, and on the day I first listened to Radio Finland, the music played at the start of the broadcast was Karelia's No. 1. That's why I fell in love with Sibelius and I started listening to a lot of classical music. Karelia suites is still one of my favorite suites.
Japan is one of my favourite places in the world. Love from Mongolia. I came to listen to this again after years, because our friend from Karelia is making her first trip to Khuvsgul Lake, near the Russian border.
For everybody complaining about the train and the cottage: if I am not mistaken this piece depicts Jean Sibelius' and Aino Järnefelt's honeymoon in Karelia. The Intermezzo is the trip to Karelia by train -and you can even hear in the back, very low, the deep breaths of the train's engine bearing the compasse. The ballade is their first night as a married couple, they're making love in the night, in a kota (cottage), to the music. That is why it is so mellow, sweet and delicate. And the Alla marcia is the trip back from Karelia to wherever they lived at the time, be it Helsinki or Hämeenlinna or wherever. You can hear the train again on the back. I think I am not mistaken and hope this was useful. Sibelius was a mastermind at depicting emotions through his scores.
Not really. The work was commissioned by a student association in Viipura in aid of a charity raising money for education. Sibelius and Aino honeymooned in Karelia the next year.

No it has nothing to do with Aino or their relationship. Who told you that? To be remembered that it's only a part of the very large Karelia music that Sibelius composed in his youth's burst mode for a fundraiser event.
This Sibelius puce of music I have listened umpteen times, It brings tears in my eye, as my mother escape from Karelia with her family of mother and five of siblings I'm 1039. She died last year at 103.,
For those in the UK who can remember back to the 1970s, part the first section of the Karelia Suite was the theme music for the ITV current affairs programme called This Week. And a cracking composition it is too. Sibelius is one of my favourite composers. Check out his Finlandia suite as well to see what I mean.
And don't forget that BBC's longest running programme, The Sky at Night music was also Sibelius.... At the Castle Gate, Beecham conducting RPO back in 52. I fell in love with Sibs distinctive voice there & then altho I was only 5.
This music is made of Finland's deep primeval forests, glittering waterways, the aroma from pine trees and the serene ambiance of the Finnish rural country.
One definition of a 'song' is merely the synonym of 'melody'. So yes this piece of music might be considered a song even though it isn't performed by human voices (it definitely COULD be sung though). I'm a singer myself and I wish there were words to go with this because the tune is glorious
I first heard this on the Boston Classical Music radio, 99.5, WCRB. I waited till the end to find out the name of the piece, and I heard the "Chorale" Suite by Sibelius. And when I looked it up, I was so disappointed to find nothing. I'm so glad to finally have found it after 2 months of giving up.

Fantastic version of the suite! Great tempo throughout. And a brilliant video too, except for those little images of a train and sauna cottage, which blocked the full view of most of the pictures...
Not sure what the steam engine is doing in the video here, this piece of music is about a hunt in the snow: you can hear the beat of the horse's hooves, the horn is a hunting horn.
@ageingdrummerboy I'm interested in how the hoofbeats of horses has affected classical music, which it must have, given that all the early composers were surrounded by them. They'd have been in carriages drawn by horses or ridden them and when you listen to the hoofbeat of horses you'll find two, three, four, six, eight and even more complex rhythms especially if there are four horses travelling at the same speed. Even if their hoofbeats appear uneven, there is always a moment of synchronicity and this must have been of great interest to a musical mind. The Sibelius piece is clearly based on a hunt: you can every beat of horses's hooves both in a sleigh and free. Or at least, it appears unmistakably so to me and I handle horses all the time.

The other Finnish conflicts in WWII were the Winter War in 1930-40 (in which Germany and the Soviet Union were in secret alliance against Finland), and the Lapland War in 1944-45 (in which Finland and the Soviet Union [and nominally the British Empire as well] were in a de facto alliance against Germany). This piece is a part an occasional series in 1893 of which Sibelius only ultimately accepted four pieces. He destroyed most of the other scores. They have been reconstructed with the surviving fragments and lastly with the composer Kalevi Aho having filled in the missing bits.

I had to scroll away from the video when the choo-choo emerged. What a shame as the music is beautiful Finnish genius. It's especially interesting if you grew up in the UK of the 1960s and 1970s and were subjected to This Week (or World In Agony or whatever it was called!), as your parents were assaulted with frowning commentaries and monochrome pictures of striking miners, NF street battles and fishing quotas being lost (subsequently discovered to be due to Ted Heath's kiddy-fiddling). By the way, it's said that the episode of This Week titled Death On The Rock questioning the outcome of the inquiry into the Gibraltar killings lost Thames TV its franchise, showing that political censorship of TV was alive and well even back then. Never question the government's decisions or they'll get you, one way or another. Anyway, the similarity to many of Tchaikovsky's pretty diversions might say something about that part of the world and the kind of folk it produces.

My mum introduced me to Sibelius' music with this Suit in the 1960s. Loved his works ever since.

Sibelius did make a Honeymoon-trip to Karelia, with a train, and sauna and Finland are not to be separated.
I agree. Those super-imposed images badly detract from the lovely scenes of Karelia or Finland.

A perfectly beautiful vid completely ruined by an attempt at creativity as if the choo-choo/cottage could in any way enhance the natural beauty of this land. Whoever put this vid together should be ashamed!
I had to scroll away from the video when the choo-choo emerged. What a shame as the music is beautiful Finnish genius. It's especially interesting if you grew up in the UK of the 1960s and 1970s and were subjected to This Week (or World In Agony or whatever it was called!), as your parents were assaulted with frowning commentaries and monochrome pictures of striking miners, NF street battles and fishing quotas being lost (subsequently discovered to be due to Ted Heath's kiddy-fiddling).
By the way, it's said that the episode of This Week titled Death On The Rock questioning the outcome of the inquiry into the Gibraltar killings lost Thames TV its franchise, showing that political censorship of TV was alive and well even back then. Never question the government's decisions or they'll get you, one way or another.
Anyway, the similarity to many of Tchaikovsky's pretty diversions might say something about that part of the world and the kind of folk it produces.
