Thanks for listening. I'm really glad you like my cover! I had it up here several times in the past, but some details of my attempts always began to bother me. So I often deleted them a few weeks/months after uploading them. I'm not sure when I'll try again but If I get a proper take someday I'll keep in mind to share it.
Thank you for listening and taking the time to write a comment. I'm really glad you like my try. I still used CGCFCE but adjusted it so it would fit my voice better. It is probably just tuned a few steps down. I'm not sure if I get around to do something like a tutorial at all. I know there are quite a few who requested it but I'm generally not a great "teacher". Especially for the theory since I learned it mostly by ear and simply base it on intuition. I hope you don't mind.
I remember I was in the car when I just got my license, and I was driving at night all alone, and this song came on. And it made me think of how I’m growing older and it was just a special moment. I cried.
This made me cry. There are no known/discovered video recordings of Nick Drake and I think this is the closest to one I've seen. You captured him so beautifully. I am blown away.
Hazy Jane 1 - was the first song I ever heard by Nick Drake ( when he was still alive ) - it was on a British sampler album titled ' Bumpers' ...this song never left my system and just kind of cast a spell on me -- never tired of the melancholy aspects and beautiful picking patterns Nick used . Your version is the best cover of it I have ever heard - the picking and vocal are pristine. ps - I love the little flourish on the end !
Uncannily good cover, with that same cool detachment as Nick, which belies the vast depth of emotion and expression of the human experience which imbues each sacred note.
Huge Nick fan. This is by far the best cover I´ve heard so far. You play very much like Nick himself. Kind of the same swing and feel to it. Very enjoyable indeed. Thank you.
I first came across Nick Drake in the early 70s when I heard Hazy Jane on an Island Records sampler called "Bumpers". I was immediately transfixed by that opening guitar riff and those dusky vocals of his. I tried to work it out, not knowing that it was played in a strange D tuning. His songs have always been special to me since then. I never did work out that song on guitar but you have. Hats off to ya!
I'm glad you like it. I don't really keep track of my progress of a song. But I think If it's not entirely new ground, It usually takes me a few hours to learn the composition and a few more days to refine and finish it. Thanks for listening nonetheless! I appreciate the kind words.
I can see Nick Drake in you, my friend... There are many Nick Drake's covers on UA-cam, but you really got the talent and spirit. Keep up the good work.
I discovered Drake's work today ! And as a songwriter myself I must say he's brilliant and these guitar arrangements are just marvelous. You did an excellent work my friend. Congrats and I know it must took a while to master this one.
@UFOIST Thank you for sharing your thoughts :) That is really nice to read. I'll keep your advice in mind for the next recordings and videos! Much appreciated.
Bravo! A great cover of a great song!! I first came across Nick Drake in the mid 70s when I heard this song on a sampler record of artists signed to Island records which was entitled "Bumpers". I was mesmerised by that opening riff and tried and tried to pplay it. I knew it was in some kind of dropped D tuning but didn't know about the tuning of the higher strings. Anyway that was the start of a life long appreciation of Nick Drake's music. Well done on such a good rendition - vocals too!!
You do justice to these Nick Drake songs Tobias. I have all three of his CDs and listen to him quite often. It gives me such pleasure to listen to your renditions of his songs. We all can learn from Nick Drake's song writing. Well done!
Phenomenal. Flawless. I'm a long time Nick Drake fan and just gaining enough skill as a player to begin thinking of attempting these pieces. You set the bar very high. Much respect and admiration!
I'm sure there are other ways and tunings to play it. None that I personally know of though. I'm sorry. Another tuning I used for many of Nicks songs would be BEBEBE. I think it's noted common among the sources. Nonetheless, I found that particularly with this progression, there is a very close rendition possible. No matter how simple it may be. This approach was the most reasonable for me, and it simply felt and sounded right.
I m here again. When i listen to Nick,i have this image in my mind. You are here in ur home and you play his tunes and his spirit is above you and he smiles to u with a very sweet smile.
@TubaGirl01 I really appreciate your support Emily! Thank you so much for stopping by :) Glad you liked my try here again. Maybe I'll get the chance to do that some day. all the best
Hey man, beautiful rendition just wanted to ask, how did you learn this? by ear? I’ve been trying to find tabs for Hazey Jane 1 but so far haven’t found any that fit the recording like your playing has, response would be much appreciated, thank you! 😊
Thanks! I looked up the tuning and learned it by ear. Never wrote down a tab for my version, sorry. But do you know www.nickdraketabs.com ? I think they're quite accurate.
Wow, you're right hand game is spot on, every digit is working hard, especially the index finger descending from high to low strings, man that's good stuff! Thanks for sharing, I hope you're making a good living at what you do best, you inspire me to.
Do you curse where you come from, Do you swear in the night Will it mean much to you If I treat you right. Do you feel like a remnant Of something that's past Do you find things are moving Just a little too fast. Do it for you, Sure that you would do the same for me one day. So try to be true, Even if it's only in your hazey way. once again I see you while listening to Nick Drake my favorite and most influential musician. And you have all the picking and strumming down perfect. your obviously another great musician. keep it up, don't give up, keep reaching and keep pushing on. :)
Magnificent work, you have a great vocal delivery not to mention the guitarplaying. Which tuning do you use? open C tuning seems to be prefered in the other videos with the capo on the 2nd/3rd Fret? But yours sounds brighter and closer to the demo version Nick Drake recorded. I see you have the capo on the first fret, so i reckon you use another tuning. Anyway you should really make some tutorials for these songs.
I play a bit of guitar, but this is from another world. Nick drake was a genius, just like Bach and Schubert.. Thanks a lot for your effort and commitment.
I was watching another one of these tutorial videos and the guy used CGCFCE for the tuning. That's the same but is there another one that is standard for most Nick Drake songs with a Capo? I can play Pink Moon and Place to Be with this tuning but it seems like there might be one that is better? The way the playing works seems too simple as crazy as that sounds.
hey man,all your cover of nick is absolutely perfect to my ear so if u could answer me to this,i would be very grateful. How can you combine the complex rythm of these songs with the vocals,i have tried but i dont know how to start :( you are doing this so flawlessly...
+Sotiris Roussis Thanks for the kind words and comments. I’m glad you enjoyed the covers. I went from simple rhythms and strumming to fingerpicking and then combining that with vocals. All with songs I enjoyed and wanted to learn, step by step. It really comes down to time and practice and you have to try until the coordination between the hands and your voice works. At some point it should just fall into place. Sorry for not providing a more solid method, but that was my approach and experience.
Lovely, I'm speechless it feels like I'm listening to Nick, your voice and skills with guitar picking are astonishing *_* I was wondering if you can cover Hazey Jane II. I bet everyone would love to hear you playing it
Absolutely beautiful. Often times great guitarists leave vocals to be desired, but you got it bang on. Plus, you look rather like Zidane from Final Fantasy 9.
Someone I admire and respect told me the only thing that matters is what is in your heart and soul. And that person was Alexi Murdoch. I've had the opportunity to chat with him at venues around town. So YOU my friend have the heart and soul of a true artist and no matter what you use to record it SHINES through. cheers, julie
Truly amazing Tobias! I closed my eyes and It could have been Nick Drake himself playing here without the string section. Since you asked about the mix, I would prefer to raise the vocal level just slightly. Other than that - flawless!

hey Tobias, could you explain the tuning, and the capo placement. I'm trying to learn some Nick Drake and I can't quite get the sound right. Great sound man!
Hi Kevin, In this video, I tuned slightly below the proper tuning and placed the capo on the first fret because that way it was easier for me to sing the song. Originally, the tuning is CGCFCE with the capo on the second fret. Everything except the high E is tuned down. If you want to quickly get it spot on, you can use the online tuner on www.howtotuneaguitar.org where you can fully customize the string setup.
We're talking about great work here dude. Your covers are so powerfull. You need to start with the original stuff and became famous to revive the folk in the world . You are freakin' talented and have so much potential to be on the top, congratulations to all of your attributes, voice, skills on the guitar and tempo notion, i'm looking foward to see your work. Subscribed and +1!
Ahhh what a wonder... ! So well done. I was looking for some tabs and I found one pretty good but still far from how you play it... Did you write the tab listening Nick ? Thanks for this moment.
Thanks! I didn't write anything down for my recordings, sorry. But I can recommend looking through the tabs on nickdraketabs.co.uk . They're the most accurate I know.

Not sure if you’re still reading comments in ‘22 but great job. Your guitar had/has a great tone.
@@HiFiAwardTour I'm still reading the comments. And still playing the same old guitar, haha. I'm glad you enjoyed the cover. Thanks.
@@HiFiAwardTour It's not the guitar! It's definitely the player. Absolutely love the precision and attack in the picking. Masterful.
Thank you for listening and taking the time to write a comment. I'm really glad you like my try.

The tuning is CGCFCE.
This made me cry. There are no known/discovered video recordings of Nick Drake and I think this is the closest to one I've seen. You captured him so beautifully. I am blown away.
I agree with you, Jacky. Tobias never disappoints.
agreed. It didn't make me cry (although I cry frequently listening to the REAL Nick but you killed it. GREAT JOB
Totalmente 😢❤
Sorry I get back to you so late. I don't mind at all. Go ahead if you like.
Thanks for listening!
Thanks for stopping by. I'm really glad you like my rendition. I learn by ear to catch more of the details and small changes in between.
I'm glad you think so. Thanks for stopping by and listening! So for subscribing. I really appreciate it.
I always find myself listening your covers of Nick Drake. Everything is perfect. Execellent work!
I'm glad you think so, Renata. Again, thank you for listening!

Super. Thanks for helping to keep Nick's music alive so beautifully, as it should be.
Huge Nick fan. This is by far the best cover I´ve heard so far. You play very much like Nick himself. Kind of the same swing and feel to it. Very enjoyable indeed. Thank you.
I'm glad you do. Thanks for listening. Much appreciated.
Excellent, really. I wouldn't be too concerned about accuracy. I doubt even Nick Drake played it the same way twice.
Ya so true. It's about channelling that rhythm through the picking which he's obviously got in spades lol
I first came across Nick Drake in the early 70s when I heard Hazy Jane on an Island Records sampler called "Bumpers". You are an awesome finger picking guitar player....your technique is up there with the best I have seen online which is saying something
Do you curse where you come from,
Do you swear in the night
Will it mean much to you
If I treat you right.
Do you like what you're doing,
Would you do it some more
Or will you stop once and wonder
What you're doing it for.

I'm sure Nick would have loved it.

Beautiful to start the day listening to your cover. Thanks!
and that is perfection in 4.14 ...
Soooo beautiful! You're great talent! How long did it take you to play this?
This is so wonderful; the closest thing to Nick Drake I’ve ever heard. You should make an album of these covers they’re awesome 👍

Thanks for uploading such a beautiful cover. I have never been so touch by one so far.
Touched*
Just came back to feel the same cozy and warm sensation your cover gives ❤
Wow incredibly done man that was awesome to get to see. Thanks so much for sharing bud 🙏🏻
It is my dream to be able to play this, my favorite Nick song..You play it so brilliantly. How long have u been playing may I ask?
Just brilliant. What a gift.
glad im not the only one who rests their pinky like that
This is the 20th time i have watch this video
It's such a beautiful cover!
Lovely, I'm speechless it feels like I'm listening to Nick, your voice and skills with guitar picking are astonishing *_*
I was wondering if you can cover Hazey Jane II. I bet everyone would love to hear you playing it
Absolutely beautiful. Often times great guitarists leave vocals to be desired, but you got it bang on. Plus, you look rather like Zidane from Final Fantasy 9.
loving your videos! truly wonderful renditions.
such a flawless cover! just wanted to ask, what tuning was this in?
Thanks! I played it in CGCFCE.
Tobias Wilden ..Perfect.
Fantastic. Great voice! Best wishes! RIP Nick.
First-rate. Really fantastic; thanks for sharing.
Love your cover! Have you used some tabs that are available online?
You are a beast! I wish I could play as easily as you do!
Someone I admire and respect told me the only thing that matters is what is in your heart and soul. And that person was Alexi Murdoch. I've had the opportunity to chat with him at venues around town. So YOU my friend have the heart and soul of a true artist and no matter what you use to record it SHINES through.
cheers,
julie
this is awesome im curious are you using your fingers or your nails to play the guitar
Thanks, Daniel. I'm using my nails.
Wonderful performances! Every one is just top notch.
Donde esta la opcion de "me encanta" aquí en UA-cam. :') ¡Simplemente hermosa melodía interpretada magistralmente!
OMG !! You really nailed it !! Love it !! You have a great talent !!
Truly amazing Tobias! I closed my eyes and It could have been Nick Drake himself playing here without the string section. Since you asked about the mix, I would prefer to raise the vocal level just slightly. Other than that - flawless!
You play really good! How long have you been playing? Your voice is good too.
I've been wondering, since a lot of nick's songs have a low tuning on the low E do you use a thicker gauge string or no?
+Mike Rodriguez I didn't. I used medium 0.12 - 0.53/0.54 sets. I tried that approach for a few other songs, but didn't notice much of a difference, except worse playability.
+Tobias Wilden Do you recall if you used medium gauge on your cover of Cello Song? I'm learning that one now with lighter strings and not sure if switching to heavier strings would affect my ability to play it. Fantastic version as ever btw, sounds like Nick's version from the reel to reel.
+tjbell27 Thanks! I used medium strings for all the covers. The only light strings (0.11 and up) that I tried and that worked with alternate tunings (not Nick's) were Elixir Polyweb.
hey Tobias, could you explain the tuning, and the capo placement. I'm trying to learn some Nick Drake and I can't quite get the sound right. Great sound man!
Hi Kevin,
In this video, I tuned slightly below the proper tuning and placed the capo on the first fret because that way it was easier for me to sing the song.
Originally, the tuning is CGCFCE with the capo on the second fret. Everything except the high E is tuned down.
If you want to quickly get it spot on, you can use the online tuner on www.howtotuneaguitar.org where you can fully customize the string setup.
thanks for your help and thanks for getting back to me so fast.
So did you tune down the "b" string to C?
Stunning! Just stunning!
This is magnificent, what a beautiful performance. Thank you.
Hi Tobias. Excellent sound, fingerstyle and voice. Great job. Superb low voicing on the guitar, what is it?
not far from accurate, it is perfect.
We're talking about great work here dude. Your covers are so powerfull. You need to start with the original stuff and became famous to revive the folk in the world . Nice. I will continue listening your covers. Nick would be very happy to hear you sing his song.❤
Really wonderful and faithful work, Tobias! I'd like to think you play out and let others listen to you doing this live.
cheers!
Very nice. I enjoy your Nick Drake covers, well played
Ah ok, actually I'm working on these tabs, so let's continue ! Thank you
