    The problem is not the population of Ottawa, it's the location of the canadian tire center. It's lost in Kanata, 40 min away from Ottawa center. Montreal would also have attendance problem if the Bell Centre was located at St-Jean-Sur Richelieu (A small city 40 min away from the current Bell Center)

    I’ve been to Panther games in Florida many times. BB&T Center is NOT far from its
    fans. It sits directly adjacent to a major highway that connects ALL of South Florida’s suburban population. Plenty of parking as well. The Panthers have problems for sure, but the location of its arena is not one of them.

      Agree i think BB&T is in a great location. Just off the highway, not to much traffic on that side of the "overpopulated SouthFL", as if you would have to drive down a gridlocked I95 to Miami. Even if we are a lot of people down here we have a lot of things fighting for our entertainment dollars. Great college sports. Miami Heat, Marlins, great concerts daily etc etc. And its" fing" expensive to live here. I 'll go to watch when Penguins comes to town and its always a lively arena, "The Rock" in New Jersey is far worse. Sad part is lower bowl is all corporate and they like tax deductions more than hockey. Fans sits too far from the action. BB&T dead during the week but is popping during the weekend if the right teams are in town.

    Admittedly I am not an expert on the financial status of the Ottawa Senators. However as a sports fan of over 45 years, since I was six (yes I am old) I have heard this many times where owners, athletes, and GM'S say one thing (and lie) while they mean another thing. Owners say "I will never move the team" so that the idea is out there and then when they do move the team they can say, "I never wanted to move" and make someone else look bad for moving a team. Athletes say, "I'll never play anywhere else" so when they leave for more money that they can say that they never wanted to leave. People LIE. Maybe Mr. MELNYK either doesn't want to own the team or doesn't want to stay in Ottawa and this is just confirmation of that. I know The Hockey Guy has said that the NHL wants a team in Houston, Texas. It could be that the league is behind this? A good way to have a problem owner sell a team to a group in a city that the league wants to expand to.

    A suburban arena condemns a team to poor attendance and revenue struggles. The five teams that play in suburban arenas consistantly are at the bottom of attendance lists
    -Islanders
    -Hurricanes
    -Panthers
    --Coyotes
    -Senators
    All of these teams should relocate to urban downtown arenas and leave the bedroom community locations for minor leagues. The proposed Belmont Park arena is doomed to failure like all suburban venues.

    • @fightsports66
      @fightsports66 5 років тому +2

      Barclays center is in brooklyn which is not the suburbs. That being said the Nassau coliseum does not have a LIRR stop which will be a problem for playing there while the Belmont arena is being built. Belmont raceway has more roads and more buses going to it than the Nassau Coliseum but the Belmont raceway site will need to do work on the LIRR station because it really only operates on racing days.

    As someone who lives just outside of Ottawa, I can say that the attendance issues come more from the fans attitude than the building. We know our owner is a clown, get over it. He has stated that he has no plans to ever sell, or even really relocate the team. So owner wise - things will not change. Right now there is a big group of Ottawa fans that will simply not let go of the whole "our owner is trash" attidue. Most "fans", if you would call them that, don't say anything about the team besides trashing the owner. The team could be in first place, and there would still be a group of fans that don't care, and still just rip on the owner. Its disheartening to see, and as an Ottawa fan I think it puts a negative presence on the team, and greatly discourages any new potential fans. That's the real problem at this point. It's the negative fans, and the fact that they can't get over the fact that our owner is a clown. Yeah the billboards were funny last year, we all had a laugh, move on. Get over it. The team is actually doing alright this season, yet nobody I talk to says that... it's the old "Melynk is a **** speech. I feel bad for the players on the team, the fans are ruining it. Then if Melnyk ever does decide to move the team, the same negative fans will then play the "I told you so" card... then in the future start complaining that we have no NHL team.

    I love your vids, but this one's poorly researched. The other bid to develop Lebreton Flats is a group called Devcore. Their leader is friends with Bettman. Their plan also includes an arena, and they've said they would like to acquire the Senators from Melnyk. If Melnyk's deal falls through, the NCC (the gov't group that controls Lebreton) will turn to Devcore. If the NHL decided to intervene, the most likely scenario would be that they would force Melnyk to sell the Sens to the Devcore group.
    In sum, there is another group interested in buying the Sens with plans to build an arena in Lebreton Flats. The notion that the NHL would overlook this group and just move the team is unrealistic.

    Ok as a sens fan there's 2 ways to look at this.(If its not fixed before january wich it won't)
    1. Melnickel moves the team :(
    2. 2 years ago, the other group in the bid were gonna build an arena anyway. If this group (the group associated with Alfie) gets the Flats, they will build an Arena Anyway, wich leaves Melnickel with 2 options. either he sells the team right now when he still as the bid so he can sell at a higher price, either he sells to the other group after he loses the flats and get pressured by the league to sell. He could always try to move, but i doubt 2/3 of the owners will agree that he leaves when there is a perfect arena being built down town. With the patience the league as had for Arizona, if Bettman agrees to moving the sens while an arena is being built he just comfirms the anti-canada rumors.

    Unlike the Senators with their arena in Kanata, 40 min away from downtown Ottawa, Québec at least built their Vidéotron Center in the most populated area of the city. Also, if they can get 15 000 people to go watch some junior hockey or collegial football, what do you think will happen with a real NHL team? I'm tired of the "there is no money to be made in Québec". Yeah ok, keep your Glendale, Sunrise and etc mentality, which is 0 fans, but lots of TV contracts. Year by year, more and more people are actually cancelling their cable subscriptions and watch any game they want for free on the net (you can easely find an NHL livestream website in 2 min nowadays). In 5 or 10 years, when they'll realise younger generation don't give a shit about T.V, they wont be able to make money with REAL fans attending games, cause they won't have any!!!

    So this isn't the first time you have criticized the location of the Florida Panthers arena. I understand why the fact that the arena is in Sunrise instead of Ft. Lauderdale or Miami seems sub-optimal to fans not familiar with S. Florida. The key is that the Panthers play for 3 metro areas, not just Miami. Moving to Miami would probably cause the Palm Beach market to lose significant interest, and I think Palm Beach is the center of Fl. youth hockey, so there is a vibrant market there. Also, the infrastructure around BBT center is awesome: one can easily get to Miami or Palm Beach in 30 min or less, as I-75 rarely has traffic. The situation is not as nice in Ft. Lauderdale and (especially) Miami. People brave the travel for Heat games, but would they do so for Panthers games? They certainly don't for the Marlins... Suburb typically connotes uncomfortable distance in most areas, but it just isn't the case in S. Fla. Finally, the arena is located right next to Sawgrass Mills Mall, one of the largest malls in the country, so traveling fans can usually make a day out of a game. The Panthers have had myriad problems over the years, sure, but the arena is far from one of them...

    • @TheHockeyGuy

      That then points the finger back at the fanbase then. The arena's location has been used plenty to justify the team's poor attendance. If that's great, then the fans just are not supporting a pretty entertaining team.

      @@TheHockeyGuy Agreed. South Florida fans are notoriously fickle, and there are a lot of transplants in the area. Decades of woefully inept ownership has this effect in the area. Take the Miami Marlins. They have a new arena in a good location, in an area that is tailor-made to support baseball, but they barely draw more than AAA teams. I like what Vinnie Viola has done on the business side of things; hopefully he can turn this around.

    Love your content and so it pains me to say this, but you are way off on Ottawa. Probably just because you are not aware of the following: 1) There is another buyer (Desmarais/liberte) willing to buy and keep the team in Ottawa and develop Lebreton, 2) The sens are actually good financially - Gate is only 35% of revenue. - Proven attendance when fans aren't mad at owner - Melnyk stated he was losing 10 mil per year in 2014, then revenues went up by 20-30 mil due to new TV deals...ie: no additional costs. - the reason the team is hurting is because an NHL team requires cash flow...paying out bonuses years before revenues to match for example...and Melnyk doesn't have/isn't willing to float the cash flow, 3) The stadium will be mostly paid for by the condo developer who is only getting the land cheap because the hockey team is coming with it. In other words, this is a sweet deal for a stadium that the team/Melnyk will never find in another market, nevemind relocation fees, cost of new stadium in another market, etc, etc. The team is more valuable in Ottawa than anywhere else and it will never be more valuable to a new buyer than right now. He'll sell or make the money work, but it's not moving.

      He has been on the record that he will never sell the team. He has also been very vocal about not wanting to pay top salaries in the NHL. The location of the arena doesn't work and if they don't get a downtown arena, it's not just me saying the team could find itself getting moved. If they move to Quebec, the arena is already there and the costs would be minimal compared to the possible return.
      Melnyk has made it clear he is THE owner of the Sens which means it will all hang on what he decides to do and what the NHL is willing to do.

    Honestly, Ottawa needs a new owner, not a new rink. I was born in Ottawa, grew up here, after living away for 6 years, I now live here again and have been to many games. The rink is awesome, getting to it takes no time at all down the 417, with normal traffic it takes 15-20 minutes at most and there are buses non stop. The only things to complain about as far as the rink goes are high prices, the name changes every few years and I wish they had a Vegas size scoreboard.
    Where the issues are, are with the owner jacking up prices for parking, not having staff, not spending to the cap, and not giving cornerstone players long term deals. Basically he wants fans to pay and he wants the Sens to win without putting forth any investment like other teams do.
    It also drives me nuts that he just expects players to take a "home town discount" just because they like playing in Ottawa.
    To be honest, as much as I like an idea of a new rink (mostly because I like the design in the pictures they released), I hate the idea of a rink downtown. No parking, Buses are already brutal, and I'm sure everything else will cost twice as much.

    This arena situation in Ottawa is reminiscent of what happened with the late Charles Wang trying to get a new arena arena for the Islanders, while he was the owner. Like the ambitious arena project that Melnyk is currently championing, the Lighthouse project was pretty much the same deal that the Lebreton Flats project is. What derailed the Islanders arena plan was that Nassau County residents had no desire of being taxed more than they already were to fund a new arena for a hockey club. The Nassau Coliseum like the Canadian Tire Center a.k.a The Palladium is located in the suburbs & not downtown, which makes it difficult for fans to attend the games on a consistent basis. Unlike the Coliseum which was an outdated building by NHL standards, the Canadian Tire Center is a modern arena that has one of the best game atmosphere in the league. You can blame Melnyk for a lot with the Sens, but you can't blame him on this because he wasn't the owner who put the arena so far away from downtown Ottawa.

      There is a big difference between the Islander situation and the Senators. When Wang bought the team whatever problems he had (and the Isles had many) he inherited a big new tv contract from the previous owner. He was on Cablevision throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island and also in the borough of Brooklyn in NYC. Cablevision is not in Queens so he was able to sign with Time Warner Cable to broadcast games in Queens on SNY with the Devils. I was caught by surprise when a new arena was built in Brooklyn and the Islanders were moved into it but the Islanders were never going to leave the New York area because their television contracts were too lucrative. If Wang had sold the team say to the group that wanted a team in Quebec he would have had to sell at a way lower price because the teams biggest asset, the NY cable tv contracts would be lost. The Senators could move to another market of similiar size such as Quebec or even a bigger tv market such as Houston.

      @Mr. Man Quebec City is smaller than Ottowa but not by alot and they wont be paying. Quebec already has an 18,259 seat arena hoping that if they build it an NHL team will come. The building opened in september of 2015 so it is pretty new. Plus once the city gets an NHL team they will be able to get a better naming rights deal for the building than what they have now.

    • @fightsports66
      @fightsports66 5 років тому

      If the Senators go to Hamilton it is smaller but still a decent size market. More important it has the FirstOntario Centre which seats 17, 383 for hockey. It is an old building (the old copps coliseum) but its been renovated and is in a better location in the city so it would be good enough for the time being until they could get financing for a new arena.

    • @fightsports66
      @fightsports66 5 років тому

      @Mr. Man I thought you meant pay as in pay for the stadium.You are right, the Sens will have to pay a relocation fee. I do not want Ottowa or any fans to lose their team. However a team can be lost to another city, sometimes even a smaller market, if one city has their ducks in a row and the other doesnt. The Raiders negotiated for years to get a new building in Oakland with no real progress. Then Nevada passed that hotel room tax which would only be paid by visitors to Vegas, not residents. That secured the financing so the Raiders knew the stadium would get built. The Seattle Supersonics could not get a new building in Seattle (even now a decade later Seattle is doing a renovation instead of a new arena). Oklahoma City lured the NBA just like Quebec City is trying to do by building the arena first.

    The only reason Melnyk clings to the Sens is for reasons of ego, which is hilarious because the more he clings, the more of a laughing stock he becomes. He's a good object lesson for Canadian hockey fans who like to blame Betman for Canadian teams not doing well. It's not Betman now, or ever. It's because for the most part, Canadian owners are shitty business people and poor managers. Present day Leafs an as yet to be ultimately proven exception.
