I just found your South Dakota Corn Harvest 2018 - John Deere 9720. It is some of the finest videography I have ever seen, and presents American agriculture at its apex! Every American should see it!
I'm a high-school drop-out. Got my G.E.D. in the U.S. Army back in 1962. "The Mpemba effect is the observation that warm water freezes more quickly than cold water. ... Hence the faster freezing. Another is that warm water evaporates rapidly and since this is an endothermic process, it cools the water making it freeze more quickly." Maybe your pappy is paying you too much! LOL Seriously, My hat is off to all farmers! I would not want to be out in that. You guys are awesome. Specially your Pap! That's because he helped make you the man you are!!
Thankyou fo a great video of what it takes to be farmer in the Midwest I sent this to all my wimpy city dwellers I am retired in arizona but a handicapped stroke survivor I used to like winter would be to hard for my care givers I have subscribed and look forward for more videos your father should be very proud of you sure keep a lot of balls in the air the skid steer does need tracks for the snow dale j in arizona I like all the John Deere equipment I am retired from John Deere again thankyou very much
Back in '78, we had a bad blizzard come thru Ohio with a couple days of snow and wind. I was 11 and thought it was great to be out of school for two weeks. My oldest brother showed up with one of those snow blowers on a tractor and promptly deposited the entire driveway gravel and dirt into the backyard on his first attempt. Guess who had to spend his summer shoveling gravel and dirt into a wheelbarrow.
I worked all of my adult live in the oil and gas business, due to the psi of the well and the cold temps, which didnt happen that often in texas, we would wrap a tarp around the well head and take a hose like Brian had, tie one end off so that it would hang near the well head and push the other end over the exhaust of pickup. Farm boy ingenuity!!!!!
Strong winds and snow in your open country will certainly make some stormy weather and large snow drifts, interesting video of your snow blowing equipment, I kept waiting for a shear pin on snow blower to break, must have been nothing big mixed in the snow. the area with bedding blown down must be a interesting mess in the spring thaw
Very creative to use the warm exhaust from the Skid Steer thaw the water in the tank. Having livestock is a lot of work but it is even more difficult in the winter and snow.
This was a really fun video. I know the snow obstructs your efficiency. At first it didn't look like that much, but as you cleared the way, you definitely got screwed by old man winter and his 12 inches. 👉👌😟. Stay warm, both of you. Jack fost is definitely out there.💨☃️❄️. Thanks for keeping up the good work so we can watch and enjoy. Professor Dewey L.
Sonne Farms .........I feel special that you notice I comment every week. ✌️ I am a big fan! I really enjoy your videos/work, and family. Have a pleasant day my friend. Professor Dewey L.
One winter this drinker froze and it was -20 degrees out and windy. I got my hands a little wet and it froze the skin on my hands. Hurt for a few days.
I live 50 miles south of Sioux City. We've had very little snow so far this winter. Had 1.5 inches of rain about 10 days ago. The weather is nicer now than at Halloween.
BURRRRR lol I don't miss that white stuff at all lol I did the feeding and opening water on my uncle's ranch for 20 years in SE corner of Montana. I know first hand how much the cold gets to you lol I also know how much of a pain in the butt snow drifts are. But ya'll have it pretty bad for that where you are. I bet at least 80% of South Dakota is wide open prairie and rolling hills. I'll never forget the many years of feeding cows in -45 degrees and blowing like crazy. I think the coldest temperature I can remember that included the wind chill was 85 below zero. That day the way we got the livestock fed was with the old Farmall tractor that ran on propane. None of the diesel tractors would run. Thank God for smart ranchers who are prepared for such things.
im a south dakota rancher to, i like your videos and i run i 250 head ranch, along with my dad i do most of the work and its nice to compare to the weather, keep it up. oh and im 15 years old
I feel for ya. I feel real cold too. LOL.😎 It is -26C/-16F in Manitoba now. I like the exhaust pipe trick. Reminds me of when I was a kid fixing cars in Dad's garage. He had this 10 foot long flexible stainless steel pipe we used to stick on the car exhaust and run it thu the garage door so we could idle and run the car when working on it. Back when dinosaurs roamed and we had carburetors you had to do that.
Farming is a difficult, tedious, expensive challenge in the best conditions; adding the hazards of winter increases that challenge ten fold. I wish there was a way of knowing where my prime ribs & steaks were raised, as SONNE FARM beef is well cared for under all conditions. Getting close to the end of my "binge watching" of the past 2 years of videos.
If you have any old truck tire chains then you could just make them shorter and then put them on the rear tires of your skidloader. It will give you a noticeable amount of traction

They sure can! But when the cattle have their full winter coat on they don't start getting cold until it gets below 18 degrees F. We provide windbreaks and bedding to help them keep warm!
Oh wow so much snow I am not used to come from South Germany and we have 50° F thats warm for January Greeting from a fan from Germany :) (sry my english is bad)
You should be OK with the power lines your in the safest place, the tyres on your tractor will protect you, as rubber insulate, our dear farm hand had the folks up on the bail feeder and hit the live cable going over the yard, I told him Not to get out the tractor until I turned off the main electricity, thank goodness he didn't drag them down lower, he peed his pants, he said all the lights in the tractor went really bright, I said to him keep the folks down and your be OK.
I really enjoy your stories and your daily life farming. One question I have is how many cow calf units are you running and also total head you average including cow/calf feeders, replacement head etc. I have a feeling it’s a lot more than most of us think it is.

Do the cows live outside all winter? There is no barn to move them into? I see you spreading new chopped up stubble outside for them but still it must be brutally cold? Poor cows?
It is a fact that when they have their full winter coats on, they don't mind the cold until it starts getting below 18 degrees F. Then you need to feed them a little more so they can burn it to provide more body heat. In every pen there is ample wind breaks provided to help keep them warm.
New subber love your channel, wish I found you sooner. that snow is not conductive my friend, more like an insulator because of the air trapped in the snow crystals.
