Dorians 3rd ever pro show. His 2nd year as a pro. His 1st Olympia, and he came second. The following year Kevin Levrone made his pro and Olympia debut, and also placed 2nd. The year after that Flex Wheeler made his pro & Olympia debut, also placing second. The 90’s was an era of amazing progress and physiques. Guys continued to get bigger and conditioning continued to improve, before sharply falling in the early 2000’s. Later we would get bubble guts, soft watery/puffy physiques and crappy conditioning. The 90’s was by FAR the best Era. Starting with Lee Haney, dominated by Dorian Yates and ending with (the best versions of) Ronnie Coleman, Flex Wheeler, Kevin Levrone, Shawn Ray etc. etc.
There were a lot of good bodybuilders he competed. Stop focusing on only the biggest names and most accomplished ones and try to see the potential in the others also.
Haney's V taper was unmatchable for 10 years (8 Olympias). I will never forget when I met him during a guest posing in 1987, How normal he looked in clothes. He just looked like a guy in really great shape. Guys in the crowd were bigger and more muscular than him. But put those "Posing Trunks" on.... and it was Lee Haney all day, everyday!
Look at that man. An era when aesthetics still had a meaning and pros were truly gifted genetics in bone structure itself. Narrow asses, big wide ribcages. Also legs development in proportion to whole body.. Unlike in late nineties and then on till today. HGH and insulin overgrown monsters.
Clear? Nah. This was the only time he was run close. Dorian won most of the mandatories and Haney's legs weren't good enough. Lee maybe just squeaked this win....but he retired af the right time he wouldn't have beaten Dorian again without massive changes to his regime.
@Dino Buckhoy The scorecards don't lie. How come he didn't win more Olympias? He won 6? The reason he didn't win more is cos his left arm was destroyed by injuries and he had ab hernias....maybe results of the HIT he did. Haney was truly great but Dorian was better than this in 92 - a new level of granite conditioning. And in 93 he changed the sport with unprecedented mass. Lee would not have beaten him again mate....not with the creeping gyno and the relatively skinny legs. Sport moves on. Dorian couldn't have held off Ronnie....certainly not the '99 Ronnie. It doesn't lessen Haney's achievements, or Dorian's, that they were bettered. In fact it enhances them, because someone had to be game changing to better you.
@Dino Buckhoy That's entirely opinion. The 8 Olympias only mean he was the best for those 8 years against the criteria and competitors of the time. That's it. Flex Wheeler and Kevin Levrone haven"t got one Olympia between them. But if you put them, at their mid 90s peak, up against Haney at his very best.....Lee would finish third. But Dorian beat those guys.... not on aesthetic opinion, but on the facts of mass and conditioning.....the same way he would have beaten Lee. Olympia isn't a modelling contest. Sport moves on.
I can't believe I'm saying this about a guy that won the Olympia 8 straight times but Lee is underrated as heck. In my eyes he's the greatest champion the sport has ever seen. Bodybuilding was all down hill shortly after this one.
I was lucky enough to win a competition to spend 2 weeks in Florida at the Walt Disney Dolphin Hotel, and attend the 1991 Mr Olympia. The competition was held in the hotel auditorium. As a 21 year old bodybuilding fan, I was in awe to see those guys just wandering around the hotel with their entourage. I also got to spend a day sunbathing by the pool with Francis Benfatto - what a lovely guy he is. I'd never seen Lee Haney in person. His physique was unbelievable that day. I believe that the 1991 version of Haney would have beaten the 1992 version of Yates to claim a 9th title. However, the 1993 version of Yates was on a completely different level
Lee all the way. Great size, shape, conditioning....he had it all....and the small waist was incredible (no bubble gut with Mr Haney ever)....bodybuilding has gone down so far its ridiculous....this was the golden era for sure and Lee was the King
I don´t think Lee Haney couldn´t play the size game. He had the same weight and size than Dorian at the time. Both were almost the same age. Lee was 31 in 1991 (still young for bodybuilding). If Lee wanted to play the size game he could grow much more. I think he was actually tired of being competing almost a decade. Won everything, had nothing more to prove and retired as a great champion, to be remembered forever as champion. Dexter is a living prove that is possible for a bodybuilder continue over the years having progress in muscle mass. Especially this guys who have superior genetic concerning to bodybuilding. He could have kept getting bigger and better if he needed to.
This is 91. Haney retired after this show because he saw a 6 time Olympia winner coming for him. Nothing but respect for Haney. He did the right thing going out on top with 8 wins in his pocket.
Dorian beat Haney in the muscularity round. Haney knew he couldn't compete with Dorian a year later so he retired, despite what he said in his victory speech.

So this being their first comp against each other Yates wanted to set an impression on Haney and let him know not to mess with him. That time in Mr. Olympia 1992 Lee's back was wider than Dorian later Dorian known for his phenomenal back pose n his back became one the best back in bodybuilding history.
One of the best Mr. Olympias bodybuilding contests ever is the Olympia of 1991. I have only watched a couple of Olympias: the Mr. Olympia of 1983 is a classic. I have bought several Musclemag International magazines in the nineteen nineties. I've also been to the headquarters, and store of Musclemag International up to the early 1990s to visit a bodybuilding seminar. Up to the end of the 1980s, and late '90s for the most part, bodybuilding was about shape, a V-taper, wide shoulders, pinched in midsection, wide outer thighs, wide outer calves. Thus giving the physique that "X-frame" as Greg Zulak wrote about in the late 1990s. For the Mr. Olympia 1991 Bob Kennedy chief editor, and publisher of Musclemag wrote a spectacular caption under a photography of Lee Haney, and Dorian Yates posing, and showing a rear double biceps, back pose. The caption says: "the two greatest backs built by man", describing the Mr. Olympia of 1991! This flat angle is not shown on the above Olympia 1991, by the way. A most fitting, and magnificent statement! From what I also remember, that grandiose picture is of tremendous stature; to a height that reached the mountain of Olympus. Back at the Mr. Olympia of 1979 I remember a photograph from a magazine of Robbie Robinson, and Frank Zane. Photograph was of the same tremendous back, double biceps pose! Although it was very close for first place for the Olympia 1979; Frank Zane became the victor for this big, very prestigious contest by a very small margin. Zane won the Olympia competition in a blaze for a third consecutive time.
I say Lee could've won even in 1992 giving him 9 straight Olympia wins but, not in 1993 and onward. Dorian Yates became a beast by then and pretty much unstoppable until the rise of another beast in Ronnie Coleman.
@`CuntHammer Von LoveJuice you're forgetting that Haney would have started using GH and insulin just like Yates did beginning in 1993 and with his superior genetics would have still beaten Dorian. Lee was only 31 when he retired and hadn't even hit his peak yet.
Arnold had 6 Sandow's at 28 - Left in his Prime Haney had 8 Sandow's at 31 - Still in his Prime !! And now rhoden won his first olympia at 43 I wonder how the game has changed.
I'd say Haney is a clear hands-down winner here, just dwarfing Dorian's back and overall size here. But Haney saw how solid Dorian was and that he was just getting started, Haney saw the train heading for him. Haney bounced once he saw he had a loss coming soon. Dorian never got his chance to dethrone Lee. Though Dorian didn't top 8 Olympias, I think Dorian's prime physique was more impressive than Haney's. Dorian is my favorite Olympian ever.
He'd been there 10 years, won for 8. What was he supposed to do, stick around and give every up and coming asshole a swing? He'd already beaten Arnold's record, unlike Dorian, HE had nothing left to prove.
Dorian won the contest with better legs, lats, back, obliques, calves and triceps. Haney just had a slightly wider chest with a better physique. I always thought everything on Lee Haney was too small for his massive chest.
I’d heard of Haney in 1986 saw him in the Flex mags didn’t think much of him until I saw him standing next to his competitors that’s when it dawned on me why he was no 1 he was huge his back was massive his chest made his waste look tiny something you never see at all nowadays.Dorian new he had to train like a maniac to keep up with Haneys size
Almost forgot how great haney was being I'm 25 so mainly remember ronnie when it comes to the 8 time reign but watching this proves to me haney deserved 8 just look at the proportions insane muscle belly and insertions just the complete package from the back side and front last of the aesthetic generation in men's open the rise of the mass monsters came 93 onwards but arguably the greatest
Great video, that was close. It could have gone either way, but it appears with Haney having improved from year before, with a touch bit more size, and this being Dorian's first Olympia - therefore judges had nothing to compare of any improvement or slide back, the champ tends to get the respect - seeing as its Haney! also he has his dominant poses which yates had not yet. You can't fault Haney's poses, they demonstrate his mass and size than most bodybuilders ever - he has is own unique poses, that are in the history books. A tough one for Dorian, but i like his physique here in 91, and after it just went too big for my liking. Kevin Levrone brought a similar shredded look in 92, finishing 2nd to Yates, had one of the best pleasing physiques to view on stage, but now judges thought 'wow dorian your 40/50 lb heavier with more muscle, The judging criteria has hopefully changed with Shawn Rohden winning, this should be the physique - well proportioned to win. Having followed Dorian youtube where he admitted he didn't have the best biceps and Nasser could have beaten him in 97 and Kevin and Shawn were also robbed of a one olympia, Its only worth having multiple olympia titles - if u were rightly judged to be better than the rest, not bigger ! ....bigger is not better when u have legends like Zane, Schwarzenegger, Samir Bannout, Haney, those physiques in bodybuilding - vacuum pose, were what bodybuilding is. Stay hungry, but Stay honest & true.
Yates had the first of a long line of powerlifting genetics with a bodybuilders wrapping, the type that has dominated the sport for decades now.Haney was pure bodybuilding, wide clavicles, narrow hips and muscle that moved while posing.
There's always someone who says:"arnold is the goat". What I will never understand is why? Who cares who is the goat, the only important thing is that we're talking about fantastic bodybuilders and we should only enjoy their performance. And try to take advantage from their advice.

Just look Lee Haney smile he is enjoying in performans according to the others.Amazing.
After Haney, Bodybuilding lost it's aesthetics.
man it's 1991 . Dorian won 92
This was actually the Olympia of 1991.
In 92 Lee not competed 😆😆😆😆
Lee hanley my childhood hero 😁
Song please when he gets punched
Not 92. This is 91
This is the era of real bodybuilding
I see that ABYSMAL camerawork has a long standing history with the IFBB.
Dorian won the contest with better legs, lats, back, obliques, calves and triceps. Haney just had a slightly wider chest with a better physique. I always thought everything on Lee Haney was too small for his massive chest.
Haney had an amazing front double bi but no hamstrings.
I’d heard of Haney in 1986 saw him in the Flex mags didn’t think much of him until I saw him standing next to his competitors that’s when it dawned on me why he was no 1 he was huge his back was massive his chest made his waste look tiny something you never see at all nowadays.Dorian new he had to train like a maniac to keep up with Haneys size
this is the golden age of bodybuilding
The judges should have made Dorian and Lee compete in a test of strength for the title. Damn!
I'm sorry but besides the chest, back and a great ribcage Haney was lacking quite literally everywhere. His proportions were super off.
This olympia 1991
Still can't beat Dorian's conditioning.
Kevin Levrone brought a similar shredded look in 92, finishing 2nd to Yates, had one of the best pleasing physiques to view on stage, but now judges thought 'wow dorian your 40/50 lb heavier with more muscle,
The judging criteria has hopefully changed with Shawn Rohden winning, this should be the physique - well proportioned to win.
Having followed Dorian youtube where he admitted he didn't have the best biceps and Nasser could have beaten him in 97 and Kevin and Shawn were also robbed of a one olympia,
Its only worth having multiple olympia titles - if u were rightly judged to be better than the rest, not bigger ! ....bigger is not better when u have legends like Zane, Schwarzenegger, Samir Bannout, Haney, those physiques in bodybuilding - vacuum pose, were what bodybuilding is.
Stay hungry, but Stay honest & true.
Thes mr Olympia 1991 ???????
Upper bodies were close...With the edge going to Lee Haney. But Dorian destroyed him in legs.
Yates had the first of a long line of powerlifting genetics with a bodybuilders wrapping, the type that has dominated the sport for decades now.Haney was pure bodybuilding, wide clavicles, narrow hips and muscle that moved while posing.
Haney is probably my top all time bodybuilder, Yates is second.
There's always someone who says:"arnold is the goat". What I will never understand is why? Who cares who is the goat, the only important thing is that we're talking about fantastic bodybuilders and we should only enjoy their performance. And try to take advantage from their advice.
The day the thought was fully cemented in this guys head that he could and would win Mr Olympia big up DY
Umm this is the 1991 Olympia
Just a casual flex between these black gentleman
