Will never be able to associate this with anything else but Badlands. One of those movies I saw by accident in 73 when I went to see whatever the support feature was with it at the time. ( Yes, you used to get two films for the price of one in those days.) Stunned me and got me back for more. Years later found out what the music was and it's been on my top ten fave ever since.
The ' child-like simplicity' is because the original composer, Carl Orff, composed this music for children to learn to play music. I think it's a wonderful piece, and it suited the eerie atmosphere of Badlands so very well.
You are not alone....I've been fascinated by it the since the very first time I ever heard it play in the closing credits of the movie! Isn't it GREAT! Thank you so much!
One of the first movies I saw on Pay TV. Before HBO it was called "Channel 100" You needed a cable box to get it but I had a Heathkit TV. The frequency of the channel was in a gap between ch.6 and ch.7. Regular TV tuners couldn't go there. My Heathkit TV had a "Phase Lock Loop" .tuner and could be fine tuned to any frequency.. Also saw "the Godfather" many times.
The film is based on a guy called Charles Starkweather, who was even more brutal than Martin Sheens character in the film. Starkweather fried for his crimes.
When Steely Dan composers Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were touring musicians with Jay and the Americans their nicknames were Manson and Starkweather.
BUT NOT HIS GIRLFRIEND. SHE SERVED TIME AND THEREAFTER WAS RELEASED. EVEN THOUGH SHE WILLINGLY SAW THE MURDERS OF ALL THOSE PEOPLE. AND TRAVELED WITH CHARLES AND NEVER TURNED HIM IN.
It is one of the most hauntingly and beautiful instrumentals that I've ever heard and "Badlands" was an excellent movie!
Thanks for posting this.
+Susie196921 I MUST agree with you 100%
Definitely one of the best scores I have ever heard. Beautiful in everyway.

It's a very warm piece, but it's played along to a very cold movie
Intentional "eerie atmosphere" music choice by Malick cause it's pre-nazi musical educational fare. All together now children.
The childish cheerfulness was more suited to Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette in True Romance.
"I had a feeling today was gonna be the day."

Quite similar to the theme from True Romance.
True Romance copied it
Carl Orff didn't compose it.
HanDeRiddler probably meant Carl Orff composed this KIND of music.
@@rogertycholiz2218 ;
I think perhaps, CO "Arranged" it for the Movie 🤔.

IT IS LIKE "BOLERO" BY MAURICE RAVEL.
IT USES A VERY SIMPLE, BASIC THEME.
IT BUILDS UP GRADUALLY TO A LOUD CLIMAX.
