I played a RickenBacker 4001 for years, and took a 34 year break. I am learning guitar now on youtube. I like this video, for your doing lots of bass type riffs and picking. Almost, as if your played bass, before really getting into guitar. Nice works Justin, your a great inspiration, to get motivated again, in blues and Rock-n-Roll. Thanks for the great and detailed videos. Lots of love bro... Oh...i researched lots of music over the years. I was amazed, Brian Jones did lots of blues with a slide, at a place called ALEXIS CORNERS. Before he started THE ROLLING STONES. Sadly lots of those days were never recorded, which would be amazing. Along with my heavy metal years in the 70's...never got recorded. So, we take flight to higher grounds...
Excellent lesson. Ultimately all music is about rhythm. Your explanation is right to the point in getting down to the basics of starting with rhythm before worrying about the melody. Very valuable tips for all players from a very gifted & inspiring musician, Justin Johnson.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost the password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
@Harold Uriah thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Right hand rhythm is so important, and not easy for a lot of us. The guitar basically evolved in Spain, and different styles of flamenco (which I think of as Spanish blues) are all based on various rhythms. They also mute the strings to learn the rhythmic patterns.
Very cool lesson Justin. I'm still trying to keep rhythm going when I throw some lead lines in. It's funny, when you stopped it sounded "vaguely" familiar.
Mr Johnson you have opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me and no doubt many others. Do you perform at the Port Fairy Folk Festival every year?
Legends speak of a man who would have asked Rory Gallagher himself:" What does it mean to be the best gunslider of the guitar of all time?" And the irish man would have said:"Go see Justin Johnson and ask him what he thinks!"... that 's what I say...;)
hey man love your stuff. for doing what you do would you prefer a three or four string instrument for things that you're doing in this video does that make any sense?
Definitely! I didn't play any slide with the Little Crow in this video, but I use a very similar Little Crow Blues Plank guitar on my "Slide Technique for the 6-String Guitar in Standard Tuning" DVD: www.rootsmusicschool.com/6-string-slide-dvd.html
Sure thing! I always use my Slide Guitar Set, if you're wanting to play slide guitar, or my Standard Set, if you're going to play predominantly fretted style. I almost always use the A,D, & G strings from those packs, tuned GDG, on a 3-string. You can find the strings at justinjohnsonstore.com/collections/guitar-accessories/products/justin-johnson-signature-electric-guitar-strings
thanks a million for sharing your talent and skill from Galway ireland

Thanks for the great lesson. Simple common sense advice but it is easy to start working something out before you have the foundation down.
