I was on the Blue Note Jazz Cruise this last January, Gregory Porter was one of my favorites, his voice, lyrics, and style is beautiful. The variety in his music and lyrics is also notworthy. This song is a new one to me.

I couldn’t play or find your link. However I still beg to differ with your assertion that there is a flip or darker side to this story. Mr Porter has been on the BBC this week with Jools Holland and talks about the track, and remembers sharing the energy and “...a gracious warm and inviting time” with Jools. Importantly Mr Porter says the song is quintessentially about “...being cool with anybody that comes into your world” a quality he clearly sees and acknowledges in his friend - Mr Holland. It’s a shame Mr Porter couldn’t clarify this himself. However, in the meantime, I will respectfully agree to disagree with you.
@@eyelidman09 how can you disagree with what you haven't heard? In that link he says a scenario that took place that affected him in his past. I thought the song was based on a true story and that he took Jools' daughter out on a date. In that interview he never mentioned Jools' at all. While Gregory may have had Jools in mind, it was not said at that time. Hope you get to view it somehow. It was a good interview. Some parts were vague, but still good.
Point taken. I can’t find the Taratata interview on their website or UA-cam, therefore I can only make judgements based on what Mr Porter said directly to Jools Holland about the track on ‘Later...with Jools Holland’ series 55 episode 5 broadcast here on the BBC on 12.6.20. So until folks see both interviews, the jury will have to remain out on exactly what the specific background to this song is. C’est la vie.😷🇬🇧👍😷
My content blocker won’t let me view the Taratata interview, so I can only base my assumptions on the BBC broadcast. If you’ve seen both interviews then you have a broader perspective with regards the origins of the song than I do. Period.😷😇🇬🇧😇😷

sure wish folks would stop talking about gregory porter being "underrated." that's simply untrue, PORTER IS, an internationally VERY well known and highly sought after phenomenal jazz musician/singer/writer. besides winning grammy's for take me to the river and liquid spirit albums, he's won awards and been recognized, even celebrated by peers as a tremendous contributor to the worlds musical wealth. in my opinion, he doesn't need to "become"anything else. i imagine his music to be far far far too sophisticated and complex, for pop music markets, and thank goodness for that. just as he is he's a tredmendous success. i hope he remains true to his spirit, rather than any outside urges to become mainstream.
