This song hits close to home.. my father's last words to me were"I'll be fine God doesn't want me yet" he died 8 hours later
This song is about James Hetfield's mom who died of cancel because she refused to seek medical attention and instead chose to use spiritual intervention
* CANCER, not cancel
@@igortokarski9517 obviously he just made a simple spelling mistake
@@oldmatevb nah, she got cancelled
@@Enzo_Speedmetallmao
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail is reference to Jesus nailed to the cross
The song is about James's mother dying because her religious beliefs prevented her receiving cancer treatment - so the reference is very deep and has many levels. A very clever way to describe the situation in one sentence!
I think it's more of a metaphor. God's healing hand held back by the deepened nail of her religious beliefs. Christian science is different than Christianity
I love that bass riff intro.
I will never understand the hate this album got. For me, it is among my favorite Metallica albums. 🤘
It’s very good music, just like Load and beyond has some great music, but it’s not anything like the first three. A great many of us truly long for more music like they started out with. Other bands’ music just can’t compare, and so we resent that they left us empty.
To me it was the anticipation of something heavier than Justice. Then they released the Black album and for all it's greatness there's not a single song on it that's heavier than AJFA. It was a major shock to the system for me.
I was crossing the country by any means with just a backpack of clothes. No money, no help from family of friends, no one really even knew where I was (I was constantly moving/working in different states) when I heard "Wherever I May Roam" for the first time and it hit me like a fucking bomb, I was LIVING that very song. This album will always be on my playlist.
That album means a lot of different things to different people. That’s the cool thing bout music, everyone hears something different in each song/album/era.
Lucky for us, they don’t make music to satisfy any one crowd of fan. They make music for themselves, that they feel. Love it or hate it, at least they put it out there. Not a lot of people can say the same.
@@chriskeyes713 Well said, Chris. Well said.
"Healing hand held back by the deepend nail." Doctors couldn't help save her from her religion.
These are the thoughts that came from a 16 yr-old James watching his mother die a miserable painful death because her religion didn't accept medical intervention. He felt both hopeless & helpless.
He is a Christian today.
That was superb. I haven’t heard this for a very long time. It could be over 15 years. I’d forgotten the solo. That is one of Kirks greatest. Brilliant. Bob Rock really pushed him and it shows.
James's lyrics & Kirk's solo on this song are irreplaceable. So much pain in it
Please react to Fixxxer
I'd put this in the deep cuts of TBA tracks. I felt one way about it originally based on what I knew about them at the time, but after hearing about his mom's death and her religious affiliation and what that affiliation believed the song does take on another vibe all together. Its got to be a tough call and tough to deal with mentally and emotionally when an event like that comes in to play.
Metallica “moth into flame”. You’ll love it, brother
Dave please react to Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn and Low Mans Lyric
Great songs
Especially Outlaw Torn and Low Man’s Lyric.
This is one of my very favorite Metallica songs!
James wrote this song about his mother he followed Christian science which believes that you should not seek medical attention and rely on God to heal anything that is wrong with you.
yeah and on too of that he was 16 and his dad ditched out on the family 3 years earlier... I wonder if he automatically assumed it was partially his fault
I love this Bass Line! I love your videos! Keep it up man👍
I would really suggest listening to the isolated bass track for this song.
Such an amazing arrangement and tone.
This, Of Wolf and Man, My Friend of Misery have to be my three favorite tracks on this album.
Dood you jamming!! 🤘🏻 thank you for now pausing on the solo! cheers from GDL MX !
👍As a Metallica fan for over 20 years, I just want to say you give this band the credit they deserve MAN ! Good job at breaking down each song you do from this incredible band.
I been meaning to tell you this for months now, but I just recently signed up for UA-cam lol.
I gonna Give you a recommendation in a min. ✌️
Nice to see people finding this great music in 2020. Crazy that I was 17 when my friend and I went to the midnight release party at a local record store when this great album dropped 29 years ago. Holyshit I can't believe time has gone so fast. I was a teenager smoking weed and drinking beers listening to the album of my high school years. Megadeth Rust in Peace and Countdown to extinction was just as popular with my friends and I. One of my favorites from this era was Slayers seasons in the abyss. Such a great time for me as a metalhead and a teenager.
That bass intro needs to be longer 😭
This is one if my all time favorite metallica albums and songs
michael4011 underrated and heavy as elephant balls.
I enjoy your reactions. Has anyone requested "Damage Inc." off Master of Puppets. That song is super heavy.
One of the best albums ever besides master of puppets in my library
A song I'd like to see a reaction to is "Through the Never" off the same album. That song seems to be hardly ever done.
Sad But True would love your reaction on that. You did the Hu one. But it’s got a similar sound as this.
React to Angra - Carolina IV
When i hear this beginning, i envision an imperial walker on hoth beginning it's mission to destroy the deflector shield.
I was gonna answer questions you had, but I believe others have answered them and, even moreso, have taught me a thing or two as to the inspiration behind the song. If you'd like a personal idea to how James felt about his mother, then I would make the song "Mama Said" your next reaction. I'd love to hear your insight.
This is one of my favorites from this band. James brought the vocals... Good grief. All the of them went beast mode!!!
Definitely one of their best great reaction
I used to play the whole album, in the mid nineties. That ending used to give me a grunty brutalist feeling. Tool grasped me by 1996, as the first couple of singles off Ænima
The song is about James Hetfield's (rhythm guitar/singer) mothers religion. She was a Christian Scientist and raised her kids such. The religion was practiced of the deception that God would heal you, they didn't believe in any type of modern medicine. "Healing hand, held back by the deepened nail" is james talking about modern medicine could have heaked his mother who was dying of cancer, but her religion prohibited her from modern medicine. James' perception of the song is he's talking about a fales God, the God that his mom believes in so to speak. The advancement of modern medicine is actually a blessing from God that's what orthodox Christians believe aswell as James. He felt that his mom practiced a false religion and God.
I think, that was your the truest reaction, what i say. We see, we feel in this time what we be live.(lala La, lala La,...)
YYeaah! 😃🙆♂️🙋♂️🙅♂️🙆♂️🙅♂️🙋♂️ I also listen to music, by the music...before knowing lyrics 🤓
"that was just your life" or the day that never comes. PLEASE!
Extremley underrated
If ya like slow stuff maybe try some new orleans metal like Crowbar. Eyehategod, Down, acidbath etc!
As I am a former Christian Scientist myself (though not a fundamentalist like James' mom was), this has been among my favorite Metallica tracks!!
Great reaction! React to Opeth Demon of the Fall live at red rocks you will like it
Outstanding reaction as always man !! Now all these spiritual healing people and those saying God will heal me, did y'all ever think maybe God is why we have all these ways to help and heal ourselves ? Maybe it's God sending us the ability to help ourselves , think about all we have discovered in the last 100 or so years. Food for thought .........
OF WOLF AND MAN!
Some say that the line "the healing hand held back by the deepend nail" is a reference to Jesus on the cross but to me its more likely that James Hetfield was talking about the doctors healing hand held back by the nail that was his mother's refusal to recieve medical care for cancer for religious reasons and ultimately losing her life because of that decision.
This is my favorite Metallica album!
Love the reactions, I'd like to see your reaction to anything off the Metallic S&M album. I never knew I needed metal backed up by an orchestra! Have a sub on me.
Try BREADFAN. And THE PRINCE. show you what these guys can do! Lol
Honestly this is one of the best tracks on black album, sad but true and entire sandman are played to hell and back but the rest of the album is amazing.
The bass in this is DISGUSTING...and as a bass player myself, I LOVE it 😎
By the way, if you want thick, sludgy bass, please check out:
Black Sabbath - Into The Void
Budgie - Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman (yes, this is a real song...and it's AMAZING.)
Metallica - The Small Hours (cover song - originally by Holocaust.)
THE SONG SHOULD OF BEEN CALLED
"THE GOD WE FAILED" ✝️
That’s not what the song is about though
Dude? For real? "The healing hand held back by the deepened nail"? You didn't understand who that was referring to?
Moreover, Hetfield wrote this song because when he was a kid his parents had him (and themselves) in some cult that called themselves "Christian". Their particular brand of "Christianity" would not allow for medical treatment. His mother had cancer and, for their prayers, she died. God's hand of healing was "held back" as it were, by being nailed to the cross.
It's no mystery. James Hetfield has explained the meaning of the song many times.
Check out Leper Messiah if you haven't already done so. That song is pretty near and dear to me speaking that I never bought into the whole Christianity thing, much to the chagrin of my devout Christian family.
I don't even support when you cut the song when i headbanging (or something else) !! STOP it ! :P
You want me to stop pausing?
@@whatitdodave Ohh fuck yes ! Please :D . Just speak at the end.. Anyway i don't understand a word. I Understand english when i read it . I come from Belgium ;) . I just love watch reaction from my favorite group Metallica and share something special with the guy behind his cam :P
I’m from France and I perfectly understand what you’re saying,Dave.keep up the great work you’re doing, sir.greetings from France.😎🇫🇷❤️🇺🇸
Thank you,Mr.Dave!😎
@@cowboybill.2433 You are welcome! Thank you for watching!
One of the few ok songs, from one of their very worst albums.
I understand not liking stuff but the black album isn't remotely close to bad. I guess that's my opinion though.
Metalitard is so boring
Go away.
