MIMÌ
È un po' titubante, poi si decide a parlare; sempre seduta
Sì.
Mi chiamano Mimì,
ma il mio nome è Lucia.
La storia mia
è breve. A tela o a seta
ricamo in casa e fuori...
Son tranquilla e lieta
ed è mio svago
far gigli e rose.
Mi piaccion quelle cose
che han sì dolce malìa,
che parlano d'amor, di primavere,
di sogni e di chimere,
quelle cose che han nome poesia...
Lei m'intende?
MIMÌ
Mi chiamano Mimì,
il perché non so.
Sola, mi fo
il pranzo da me stessa.
Non vado sempre a messa,
ma prego assai il Signore.
Vivo sola, soletta
là in una bianca cameretta:
guardo sui tetti e in cielo;
ma quando vien lo sgelo
il primo sole è mio
il primo bacio dell'aprile è mio!
Germoglia in un vaso una rosa...
Foglia a foglia la spio!
Cosi gentile
Her diction is soooo clearrrrr
The greatest Mimi of all. Puccini told Melba "I like the way you sing my music. You sing Puccini, not Melba-Puccini."
Bravissima voce angelica !!!!!!............Mari
Melba went to Lucca, Italy and for six weeks worked with Puccini on "Boheme." She wrote that they worked for a few hours each day and the composer was well pleased with her work. Puccini wanted "Boheme" to be put before the public and he knew that Melba had the influence to get the job done. It was through her that "Boheme" was staged by Covent Garden and The Met. It was not greeted with unmodified rapture when it was first put on; got some very negative reviews (the subject matter, not Melba's singing), but Melba loved the opera it was through her influence that it became one of the most popular, if not THE most popular of all. By 1960, the Met had staged it over 400 times. I think she also sang it with Hammerstein's operatic venture, when she saved his company. She was also known to say that Puccini wrote "Butterfly" for her, but for some reason she never did sing it.
Thanks for sharing this gem P. It is always a pleasure to listen to your national treasure, Madame Melba.
Very youn voice indeed.
*NO ONE* will ever outdo her "Il primo bacio dell'aprile e moi!" (2:42-3:01) - that section alone demonstrates why she was called THE QUEEN OF SONG. The essence of opera, the way it was meant to be, is exemplified by Melba there. Nobody since Melba has approached the opera genre in general, or sung Puccini/Mimi specifically, with the unadulterated *PURITY* that she encapsulates in those 20 seconds. Many leading sopranos of the 20th century corrupt & wreck these arias with hideous sensibilities.
