    Fun fact the reason midge was considered problematic was because, parents thought she was a single teen mom. In reality she was an adult married to Allen.

      @Annie_Annie__ 5 місяців тому +122

      @@WelcomeApathy She was married to Alan as part of a “Happy Family” line and a bride and groom set. Then she was sold with Alan and their son Ryan.
      Only after all that was the pregnant version of Midge sold.
      But parents don’t always keep up on what the story lines are with these dolls, so parents just knew that Barbie is supposed to be an older teen. To them Midge was “a Barbie”, so she must also be a teen.
      They really should have put on the packaging that Midge was Barbie’s neighbor or something like that, the same way Skipper and Stacie dolls said they were Barbie’s little sisters.
      Anything to show that Midge is an adult, not one of Barbie’s peers.

She'd flash her phone in my face of some random girl on the internet and ask me if the girl was hotter than was she. 😕 Obviously, this was a *terrible* situation, because we all know that any reply was non-sequitur to the real issue. And, as expected, I eventually had to exit that relationship because simply put... megalomaniacal narcissists are both self-destructive and they also cause MASSIVE collateral damage to anyone and everything around them.

    One thing tho, Barbie saying "I'm not pretty anymore" as her first line from her existential crisis is completely valid. I'm pretty sure other people can relate as well but just from that one line, I completely understood exactly how she was feeling. As a character that's most commonly known for that "picture perfect BARBIE doll appearance," there's now this expectation that's created that not just other people but Barbie has of herself, which eventually becomes a measure that determines and validates her worth and value. The line isn't meant to be taken literally, but as a way to express how Barbie feels. Her mind's probably all jumbled with a blur of different emotions that she feels so overwhelmed that it's numbing. There's so much going on in her head but she can't formulate any words or doesn't even know what to say that can even closely describe the true gravity of her current state. Therefore, the only thing she can think of to say is "I'm not pretty anymore," which can also implicate or be interpreted as a way of Barbie confessing that she doesn't feel good enough and doesn't understand or see her own value.

    The one sort of plothole or inconsistency for me was,
    The explanation for how the Kens took over so easily was that the Barbies had never experienced patriarchy before, therefore they were powerless against it.
    But when Barbie and Ken went into the real world, she was Immediately scared and uncomfortable and had all her defences up.

    I'm glad they pointed out a lot of my issues with the movie too. I personally didn't care for it. I really, really wanted to love it, but it felt like a lot of ideas and not enough structure. Like a string of Barbie themed skits they loosely strung together to turn into a movie. The plot starts out being about Barbie going to the real world to find the girl corrupting her. Then it suddenly is about Ken finding out about the Patriarchy and bringing it to Barbieland. Then it becomes Barbie liberating the other Barbies and tricking the Kens. Then it's about Barbie having an existential crisis and debating on being human or not. It's just a lot. There's some fun scenes and it did get genuine laughs from me but it's definitely not the movie I thought it'd be. Seems like it's more loved by the masses because it's a movement and not a movie but hey, it got people to the theaters and that's important especially nowadays.

    To me the movie was going well until Barbie came back to Barbieland. My criticism is that they made it seem like Ken brought patriarchy to Barbieland, but the thing is Barbieland was impregnated with patriarchy from the start. There is hardly anything more sexist than treating pregnancy as a cause for embarrassment like the narrator did literally in the first 5 minutes. Plus the beauty standards; the whole girl boss vibe (which is a very superficial notion of feminism and one that does not actually challenge the system that exploits women)

      See, that's exactly, exactly their point. That's the subtlety of the movie and their exact commentary on Mattel's hypocrisy

    It's disappointing that you didn't sin Barbie for quoting Fight Club when Ken realises he is not his job (Beach), not his house, not his clothes or 'stuff' - then has Barbie actually go further by telling Ken he needs to figure himself out vs relying on her or others to tell him what to do. It's a real pity that Barbie suffers from the same problem as Fight Club that it's anti-consumerism message got lost in the marketing.

      you think Mattel produced a movie about one of their most profitable products to convey a message about anti-consumerism?

      @@Mordecai478They made a film where Barbie was being hunted by Mattel and the CEO threatened to 'put a women back in her box' while also claiming he was a feminist and just wanted to help women....(while also thinking it was okay to have a all male leadership). The film also suggests Mattel would have no problem marketing 'Depression Barbie' to young girls - as long as someone claims it will sell... It's on par with The Lego Movie's rejection of Lego 'sets' and highlighting that the way the product was marketed goes directly against the spirit of what it was created to do. Barbie's message to Ken and rejection of her 'Barbie Life' was a anti-consumerist message that buying things is not the secret to being 'enough' - but of course Ken is forced into a branded 'Kenough' hoodie that Mattel can then market...in a parody of 'Pinkwashing'/Queerwashing where companies pretend to care about feminism/LTBQTIA+ or other issues all to sell products (but not making any genuine efforts like increasing diversity in hiring/top level jobs).

      @@Mordecai478 well they HOPED it would make a billion dollars while Greta had to work very hard to keep their meddling at arms length...thanks to the Lego movie it became 'cool' for toy based movies to make fun of the companies who own them or else we would not have gotten this kind of film at all.

    Great video I’d give it a Ken-out-of-Ken.
