I think it's an issue with the modern game because I'm sure if Rice were playing 10/15 years ago then he'd be given more licence to attempt riskier passes than he is now, but this is a problem with a lot of players/teams now. Genuine question, what do you think is more likely? Players are worse now than they were before, or are they're being coached/instructed differently? He can pass forward, but does it rarely because it isn't his strength. Generally he progresses the ball by running forward then laying it off to someone who's capable of picking a pass, he's generally a progressive carrier rather than a progressive passer.
Not every player can be Rodri and do it all at an elite level, doesn't mean that player isn't elite - at least in modern football 🤷

I know what you mean, we all want to see midfielders spraying 40 yard diags to feet; but, I think the issue is that systems are so much more complex now (or perhaps risk averse), to the point that a single pass forward is seen as less valuable than the sideways pass because of the disparity in risk.
I don't think it's fair to say he can't pass forward as if he's incapable of doing it because he obviously is capable, it's just that he decides against it in matches because it represents a lower percentage of success for him to try those passes - on the basis that it's better for the team to wait for Odegaard to find space and play the killer pass or for him to recycle possession to maintain control.
I think it's an issue with the modern game because I'm sure if Rice were playing 10/15 years ago then he'd be given more licence to attempt riskier passes than he is now, but this is a problem with a lot of players/teams now.
Genuine question, what do you think is more likely? Players are worse now than they were before, or are they're being coached/instructed differently?
