im going to be doing full custom cables on my new rig. But have a question. Can you do the cables for a few inches and then do extensions. As that way it be easy to do new cables if i was the change colours and not have to worry about the pin layout on the new extensions.

This makes me think the standard connectors on either end of the cables would be "female". Is that right? And would I then use "female" pins inside those standard ATX connectors?
In what case would one need to extend a single SATA cable beyond the connector? I've never seen, or heard of for that matter, a cable with multiple connector opposed to a singular terminating connector. Would it be used for setups similar to RAIDs or some other application?
Do you still use the SN-28B crimper? Because I have one and it says it's for 28-18 AWG, but you said you use 16 AWG wire. Does it still work for the 16 AWG wire/pins?
Great stuff and a real service. Get a Hakko 936 on auction. The entire electronic part is $10. So it is risk free. I use a hot air station designed for SMD work because I can control the temperature for shrink tubing. For training wire, the filament count is key. There are three standard versions from limp "boat cable" to stiff thhn with as low as 14 strands at 14 AWG. Electric (not electronic or computer) suppliers can get you anything at 1/3 the cost that custom cable houses charge. There is no reason you can't get trainable wire as low as 18 AWG. But, you know, it is actually all about look and feel anyway. I had a guy force me to restring his whole box with 10 AWG 300 degree cloth and silicone insulation just because. $900 in wire.

MDCP-X crimpers are IWISS crimpers, with the two rear jaws milled out a little... DO NOT buy them... you can buy 3 IWISS or something similar for the same price... they even SMELL the same. Pin removers... are just standard molex brand pin removers... just buy the molex ones.. they are literally the same thing but way less money.

Have been watching your vids all afternoon, I am looking to get into modding big time, and you've hit every nail on it's head with your SC mod series and this. The problem I'm having with custom wiring is ordering some of the parts, like low profile USB 3.0 Internal female header. I use an ASUS ROG Front Base in my case, and sadly ASUS have only 1 USB 2.0 port on boards now, which is shared with the ROG_EXT port. I ordered some cables from China that have split the cable from the ROG Front Base, so that the USB portion can go to an internal hub. I am wanting to make USB cables, rewire F_Panel, the lot. I feel now that I can move on with my project however, and even after a browse of your store, I still can't find some of the parts I need. Something I'd be interested to learn is, say you're using only 17/20 pins, how to block the unused in a cable. I have an idea in my head for making wiring harnesses for computers, case/mobo/psu specific. Thanks for going to the detail that you have as I can now go and confidently obtain most of my parts... Just that damn internal USB 3.0... The female 2.0mm Dupont is driving me crazy. Can't find them on ebay from China, and it's looking to be over $2 each plus postage from the USA... Help me if you can? :D

Great videos. I was hoping you would make more of these tutorial videos and even go into more in depth detail. I am a complete noob/beginner and looking to find info on female/male pins and corresponding female/male connector. Also where does each cable go in the connectors. I see "make a diagram" or "check pinout" diagram....like to see it explained like you are telling a completely beginner. I know pinout info is important since it could mess up hardware. Thanks

You say that cable extensions and modifying existing OE cables is pointless... but here's the point and its a big one. Wait for it.... COST! The almighty dollar. Was really hoping to learn how to mod my existing cables with just custom colored sleeving. That would be worth while if the cost is minimal.
quick question, i have a power supply that has caps/capacitors at the start of the cables (evga 1200p2), what do i do with the caps if i want to custom wire???
they use it to reduce the ripple, if you remove it I think youre gonna be fine, companies like cablemod I think that doesn't use it in evga psu, but in corsairs do so I think that doesn't matter too much in your case. But if I you want and probably that's what I will do in your case desolder it or find new ones and put it in the middle of the cable or where it's gonna be hidden.
i dont think the ax1200i does, im not sure, i know the rmi and rmx power supplys do, but they are corsairs latest psu's i think. cheak to see if you have large-ish caps in the heat shrink at the ends of the cables, they are very noticable :)

Yeah, I got a build that requires six 8 pin cpu power cables. I have a 1600 watt rosewell power supply with eight 8 pin pcie slots and two 8 pin cpu slots. I don’t feel like modding the power supply. I’d rather make some custom wires. So, I guess I’m gonna have to open up the power supply to see if there are any pins sharing the same wire.
It really was trippy how you were referring to the "Male" connectors but they get plugged into. It took me a while to realise that the actual pin inside a female connector is female not the connector (casing) itself.

How do you sleeve a cable that has one cable splitting into two pinouts. Or one pinout has an extra cable that goes to another. I see that you already mentioned it in this video, but can you explain to us in detail on how to do it in one of the parts? And what to do when you have a 2x 6+2 cables coming from a single 8 pin from the PSU Always learned a lot from your videos. Keep this up.
I use the method where you split the insulation open on the "main" wire, thread the second wire through the split and solder them together. You then apply sleeving individually to the three parts and have them meet at the split. Heatshrink the whole thing up and done. I did it to replace wiring on a Corsair 550RM. i.imgur.com/zJQeso9.jpg This is the final product.
If you don't want to buy new cables, reworking stock cables is a perfectly fine option if they do what you need them to, length is satisfactory, and the parts are suitable for what you're doing. You're gonna need a pin extractor anyway. Just make sure to get the pinout right - document, label and limit how many you work on at a time.
The stock cables are usually 18 gauge or lower though. Personally I think the 15 AWG looks fuller and overall better when up in a bunch. And as you are usually doing cable mods for the looks and investing in sleeving anyways, cable is not that expansive (like 20$ for 30m) and it even boost overall electric conductivity by increasing the diameter of the cable.
Depends on what you are going to sleeve and what length. for the 24, EPS, 2 PCI-E and sata at about 60 cm you are going to need about 45 like Carlsson said. Easiest way to know is just to calculate how many wire are going to be sleeved multiplied by the length you need. So 8 pin PCI-E is 8 times 60 cm(for example) = 4.8 meters. Just calculate the length you need and the rest is easy.

I have a non modular PSU, it has some old molex conectors that I dont need, is it safe to cut them off to a minimum lenght and just put a female conector there and covert the cut cable into and extention in case is needed in the future??? has anyone try that?? it think if viable would be a great modification for us poor suckers stuck with a non modular PSU, should i give it a try??

I found those crimpers. They're Glarks (less than $20): www.amazon.com/Glarks-Terminal-Professional-Crimping-0-1-1-0mm2/dp/B06VWLW11G That torch, however, might be good, but it's waaay overpriced. I have a torch with adjustable flow and it's /very/ precise. Can adjust the flame down to where it's a pin-point or open it up and it's about the size of a pencil erasure. Been using it for 3 years. Got it for $8 from a local gas station. I modified it by adding 3 layers of steel mesh press fitted into a steel thimble with a hole drilled into the bottom of it to allow the heat out through the mesh. The thimble just so happened to press fit perfectly onto the end of the little torch. Works just like yours.
There are many copies of them and Ive tried a bunch which I wasnt happy with. I have an Iwiss pair which are similar and another blue pair, both are no good though. I think its the jaw shape.
Ahh, I just searched for SN-28B. The model number on the handle. But even looking at the picture and the close-up of yours, the little heart shapes don't look as severe on the ones on Amazon. I'd imagine that's what makes them work so well to get a reliable crimp.
I found them. The blank blue handles (no logos) and the severe looking "pointy" die set in the jaw. It makes the terminal dig into the shielding.
Your computer/laptop or whatever could have a problem with 1080p 60fps. My Netbook for example has that exact problem, the cpu just can't handle it. On my desktop Pc I have no problems whatsoever. But video drivers could be the reason as well.

They to reduce ripple but the ripple is already so low its not a issue not to have them.

The stock cables are usually 18 gauge or lower though. Personally I think the 15 AWG looks fuller and overall better when up in a bunch. And as you are usually doing cable mods for the looks and investing in sleeving anyways, cable is not that expansive (like 20$ for 30m) and it even boost overall electric conductivity by increasing the diameter of the cable.

Depends on what you are going to sleeve and what length. for the 24, EPS, 2 PCI-E and sata at about 60 cm you are going to need about 45 like Carlsson said.
Easiest way to know is just to calculate how many wire are going to be sleeved multiplied by the length you need. So 8 pin PCI-E is 8 times 60 cm(for example) = 4.8 meters. Just calculate the length you need and the rest is easy.

He always uses the small sized sleeves. As he stated, it expands up to 4x, so the bigger wire isn't an issue.

I have a non modular PSU, it has some old molex conectors that I dont need, is it safe to cut them off to a minimum lenght and just put a female conector there and covert the cut cable into and extention in case is needed in the future??? has anyone try that?? it think if viable would be a great modification for us poor suckers stuck with a non modular PSU, should i give it a try??

That torch, however, might be good, but it's waaay overpriced. I have a torch with adjustable flow and it's /very/ precise. Can adjust the flame down to where it's a pin-point or open it up and it's about the size of a pencil erasure. Been using it for 3 years. Got it for $8 from a local gas station. I modified it by adding 3 layers of steel mesh press fitted into a steel thimble with a hole drilled into the bottom of it to allow the heat out through the mesh. The thimble just so happened to press fit perfectly onto the end of the little torch. Works just like yours.
There are many copies of them and Ive tried a bunch which I wasnt happy with. I have an Iwiss pair which are similar and another blue pair, both are no good though. I think its the jaw shape.
Ahh, I just searched for SN-28B. The model number on the handle. But even looking at the picture and the close-up of yours, the little heart shapes don't look as severe on the ones on Amazon. I'd imagine that's what makes them work so well to get a reliable crimp.
I found them. The blank blue handles (no logos) and the severe looking "pointy" die set in the jaw. The closeup on the jaw looks exactly like yours.

I think the main thing that makes them work well is that the die set comes to a sharp point instead of a rounded one. It makes the terminal dig into the shielding.
the fooutage is choppy m8e and it's not due to the buffering..
Your computer/laptop or whatever could have a problem with 1080p 60fps. My Netbook for example has that exact problem, the cpu just can't handle it. On my desktop Pc I have no problems whatsoever. But video drivers could be the reason as well.
