    Really good video, Until Dawn is an amazing game and i think that Supermassive never quite reached that level of quality again, but their games are still pretty good. Keep making videos, i hope to see your channel grow.

      Thank you so much! I really do think Until Dawn was like, a perfect storm of getting almost everything right and it's always hard to follow up on that, but I am hopeful they might get there in the future (and in the meantime their games are still pretty good, as you said!)

    I have to say, even though Julia and Jessica are quite similar (Both are blonde young adults dating the main male lead, both are outgoing and eccentric), you and I both remember and care more about Jessica than Julia. The fact that you couldn't remember her name is enough proof I need. Also, I would just like to say that sometimes, I forget Brad is even _in_ Man Of Medan.

    • @TesseractHeartMisc
      @TesseractHeartMisc  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, and I think that a lot of it might have to do with Jess feeling more like a real person? Like she's outgoing and eccentric (and one of her describing traits is 'irreverent') but it also seems like underneath that she's a normal person with emotions, whereas Julia feels like a complete stereotype/caricature to me. And re: Brad, I honestly have no memory of Brad doing anything past the point of like, if he hid from the pirates that he crawls out from under the bed. I have zero idea what he actually does on the Medan so I totally get forgetting he exists.

    Thanks for your really interesting analysis. I found myself agreeing with just about everything you said and where i felt differently it was minor things. For example, LH is my least favourite because thr ending felt like a big fuck you to the player. The boring, one dimensional characters in MoM I could overlook somewhat because the developers did a really good job with choice mechanics. I didn't care so much about what happened to the characters but it was good to know that my choices were having an impact. Little Hope was utterly pointless in the end. A choice based game where your choices don't matter because the characters aren't real... Gave it no replayability. HoA is an utter masterpiece of a game. They really got everything right with this game. It's damn near close to perect. The intrigue with prologue and the attention to detail with the spear throw that pays off right at the end of the game. The jarring multiple subversions, where the writers had the genius idea to have the Iraq war as the backdrop and it feels like realism only to have that violently snatched away as we seem to enter a supernatural story and then again the awesome reveal at the end that they're aliens and the suggestion they weren't always this way, like an alien version of the descent, as we see they were likely cultured seeing as their machinery operated sonically. The characters are incredibly well written. Saleem is the best character ever! And they all have such great depth. Saleem is caught up in a war that isn't his as is trapped between his commitment to his country and his commitment to his son. Rachel is an ambitious hardass who is actually very caring about her team and is suffering the trauma of a failed marriage all the emotional turmoil of an affair with one if her subordinates. Nick is young and inexperienced but with a great deal of devotion to doing his job well and looking out for his comrades. Jason is hardened and bitter because of the trauma of having caused the deaths of some of his comrades, yet still finds it in himself to carry a touch of hope and optimism, such that he's able let his guard down and embrace a friendship with someone he once saw as his sworn enemy, and to set down the hatred that drove him and fight for something bigger. Eric starts off as a typical asshole semi-pen-pusher but who we slowly come to sympathise with as we see the people who are meant to be the good guys cuckold him pretty much in front of his face, his stoical acceptance of the situation arising partly from an awareness of his own role in effecting it, and then by the end we deeply care about and respect him for him having demonstrated a tremendous courage we hadn't expected of him. And that ending, man, in the shack! It's hands down the best action sequence in any game ever. The stakes feel so real, you've come to love every one of these characters, as they have come to do so for each other. Their desperate efforts to survive in the face of something truly terrifying doesn't stop them for being willing to try to help each other out. When they grab Nick, putting themselves in a position of real invulnerability. The fact that everyone plays a part in keeping not just themselves but each other alive. The dynamism of the camera pans, the flare lighting, the surprise appearance of the prologue guy who's name I forgot. It's absolutely perfect

    My personally ranking (from favorite to least favorite)
    1) Until dawn - the golden standard, most immersive/interesting plot, best characters, the scariest monsters, and overall the most fun
    2) The quarry - a nice return to formula. I liked the cheesy, 80s horror movie tone the game had. the characters were arguable the most entertaining out of all the SM games with the best quotes and jokes (they were a little bit cringe at times but i got over it). the werewolf design was meh but they were still scary enough and the characters being able to get infected was a nice addition to the game. I thought the game had the most variety of scenarios of all the SM games as well. So not as good as until dawn but a step in the right direction
    3) House of ashes - the setpieces are what make the game honestly. Outside of Salim, the characters are either boring (Nick, Eric,) or insufferable (Rachel, jason). However, I loved the vampires and all the insane sequences you have whenever you come across them. I loved the underground alien city section. Not only was it a cool design, but also so eery and creepy. So overall, I liked the game for setpieces and creatures, not the characters
    4) Man of medan - the plot twist is incredibly obvious from the opening prologue so I was never scared of any of the "creatures" in the game. The pirates were not a ingaging or scary threat. the characters aren't entertaining or interesting. The acting isn't very good and facial mocap is noticeably bad at times. The environment of the game is very boring on the eyes and sometimes gave me motion sickness. HOWEVER, I do like that similar to the quarry, the variety of scenarios you can get is cool. That's the only thing really puts this game above the next two.
    5) The devil in me - I WANTED to like this game so badly, but the presentation of the game is too bad to ignore. The characters are boring, the acting is awful, the mocap is awful, none of characters have any real chemistry with one another so all of the dialogue in the game is very robotic, the graphics look like a high end PS3 game, and the game is also incredibly buggy.
    6) little hope - I could write an entire essay about why this game is horrible. But I'll some it up with this. As bad as Man of medan and The devil in me is, at least in that game, the decisions you make actually matter. While little hope is literally "Illusion of choice: the game".

    Its odd to think, but i do think that novelty is a soft factor to consider when looking at game series. The Resident Evil fandom has some rather harsh divisions between generations of games, but what I find interesting is that theres some people who think that RE2 jumped the shark in comparison to RE1. Especially playing it alone, RE1 does have a sort of “haunted funhouse” vibe to it that most of the series lacks.

      Hi! I don't really have a save of Until Dawn right now for recording clips with, but I'm pretty sure (like 95% sure) that the result is identical to the video I have of doing nothing on Jess' earlier 'hide or try to run' choice. I think it's the exact same animation that plays out.

    And even Little Hope was better if you take out the ending.....

      Heya! I really appreciate that you'd be interested in a walkthrough on TDIM from me, but unfortunately some rl stuff is going on in my life that means I won't be able to get to play it for probably a few weeks. :( I likely will make some sort of video on it, but I can't necessarily promise what kind it'll be; depends on how/if the game really grabs me or not!
