  • Painting a quick sunny grassy forest sketch while sharing my story of dropping out of college and leaving my job to pursue an art career.
    My artist story: • How I became a self em...
    Why I didn't go to art school:
    • Did I go to art school...
    I am an artist residing in sunny, warm [humid] florida! My paintings are heavily inspired by nature and its beauty. I work primarily in oil paint, and sometimes watercolor. I prefer to work in a mostly realistic style and occasionally experiment outside of that. I post oil painting time lapses, painting lessons and tutorials, drawings, art tips, and occasionally artist vlogs where I share bits of my life as an artist. Creating art is my greatest passion and I'm thankful for the chance to share it with you. ♥

    I needed to hear that. I'm an artist who has a full-time job at the moment and I often have days where I feel like a failure but no, you're completely right, I'm just being responsible. It's one of those things that's so simple you think I would have realized that by now but there you go. I don't have to feel bad about not doing art full-time at the moment. Thanks Lena!

    I went to Community College briefly before dropping out. Art degrees are so expensive!! There's a University in Orlando that many of my art friends went to and most of them regret going. In the day and age where you can bootstrap your business with minimal expenses and have a ton of free resources online to learn pretty much anything and everything, I just don't think the student loans are worth it. It took me about 3 years to finally get more consistency of income with my own business with no degree after I dropped out. Interestingly this year I made almost the same income as I would've had I stayed in school and got a job as an elementary teacher. Thank you for sharing your story as always these Sketchbook Sundays are wonderful!

    Another excellent video Lena; As Mark Twain said "I never let schooling interfere with my education". You have approached your art career with a great deal of thought and determination and it has paid off;
    Slow and steady wins the race; I think more people would be successful if they followed your path;
    There is nothing wrong with making money and having nice things, but so many people are just "keeping up with the Joneses" for no other reason than that; Then, they wind up buried in debt with nothing to show for it.
    The "ideology" in art is a real problem too; When I watch your videos, they are so original and beautiful; I think paining "what you want to paint" makes all the difference
    (John Singer Sargent did his best work when he stopped doing portrait commissions and just "did his own thing" - he still did portraits but they way HE wanted to do them).
    If you take a painting you have done to 10 artists, each one will "beat the work to death" until there is nothing left!
    It seems they will tell you "you are doing it all wrong" but now I will show you how to do it correctly (MY way).
    Once again, you and your work are very inspiring!
    BTW: Your tutorial videos are VERY helpful!
    Just a quick question on this video : what type of sketchbook do you use for acrylic/oil painting (weight and quality?) :)

    Great work as usual all the way from South Africa. What you say is true. I've had many similar experiences and still trying to make things work out. Hopefully one day my art will be as good as yours. I think persistence is a key factor in any job field not only art. I actually couldn't draw. I was only good at molding and had to learn to draw. But I saw that I could mix colors really well and got a bursary into art school. Which I graduated and know I am struggling for work but I am trying really hard to make things work out

    Lena you are such an inspiration! Honestly whenever I watch one of your videos I just want to deep dive into my work regardless of motivation or anything else XD you’re amazing. I’m currently looking for a part time job because I am in debt 😂 I was an idiot and decided to go to photography school cause I was insecure about art since I’m nowhere near expert level. So I just thought it was this unattainable dream that I could never have and settled for the second thing I liked and could maybe turn into a career. But the further I got into the classes the more I realized I was slowly losing my motivation because I was never really THAT passionate about it. Sooo I dropped out and decided to start trying to get better in art. Hopefully one day I can be at least half as good as you :)
    Honestly I don’t care about becoming rich or anything like that. I just want to be able to somewhat make it and be able to do what I love full time

    One thing that is true is if you believe in your self and what you are doing you can make it work. I read about some people with just grade 3 in school. Enough to read write and do math. They would teach them selves as they go. And some even went on to become millionaires. Because they believed that life is what you make of it. And you can learn as you go it takes determination to build a nation.

      Any field is a tough proposition any more; Don't feel badly about your art work; I think the only way to "make it" nowadays is through alternate revenue streams; Investing is one way; making money through labor is a very difficult proposition (even when you work for yourself).
      I hope the art you produce gives you a sense of enjoyment and accomplishment.

      @@dchurch2012 yes, I do at least get enjoyment out of it. I do wish I had more time to paint like I used to. It's a major stress release for me and I just love to create. I have a contract with a licensing agency and sites like art.com have my prints but royalties are a joke and stuff isn't selling. Maybe it'll pick up.

    • @dchurch2012
      @dchurch2012 5 років тому +1

      @@susanc.houghtondogandfolka3163 Uggh...frustrating; The problem with selling or marketing anything I suppose, is the radical impossibility of predicting endless fads; Even if you find a market for a particular type and style of art/crafts/jewelry, etc., it is a "moving target"; A thing may be popular for awhile, then tastes change, and you are back to square one (and these are the "successful" examples). I love to paint for the same reason; the feelings you get from creating something that you are 100 percent committed to.
      I'll definitely check out your work on art.com (and I started following you here on youtube)
      We all definitely need encouragement for our art!

      She cleaned a large area on the palette to mix colors but left the area around the edges for the paint straight from the tube from previous paintings which is be used to mix new colors for the current work. It's just a quick, easy way to make space to mix and keep the paints you've squeezed out already without cleaning the entire palette every time and wasting paint. Oils stay usuable for a long time so no immediate worry about them drying out.
