When the Britishers were in India they saw this festival all baffled and when they saw the massive Rath(Chariot) of lord Jagannath they get the word and used it ever since as juggernaut to explain something massive or big.

    • @fobycoconut98
      @fobycoconut98 4 роки тому +45

The British gave a racist explanation of the festival. They described the devotees throwing themselves and pushing others under the chariot calling it a human sacrifice. That is why the word Juggernaut was always used in a negative connotation, as a malevolent force.

@@fobycoconut98 I guess you don't know the exact backstory behind the word Juggernaut.
Juggernaut means something very powerful and overwhelming. The Britishers didn't know why Indian people crowded Puri after they got to know about Lord Jagannath they researched on the Puri Jagannath temple. The word Juggernaut was a British accent of Jagannath.
      There was no racist explanation.
Had it been racist why would the word mean something positive? Please check the dictionary for the meaning as well once because there wasn't anything racist behind the word that is used in a positive sense as far as I know.

@@satyenderkumar6798 Because there is a belief that the artisan/carpenter(some say Lord Bramha)who was given the task of creating the idols had requested the king at that time who requested for the idols to be made ,to be not disturbed in the hidden chamber where he was working till the time the idols were not fully complete. But the king once wanting to see how the idols looked like came into the chamber without permission and by that time the hands and ears were not carved yet so the artisan in anger left the chamber and the idols remained incomplete like that since then. I have given a short summary of the big story I had heard as a kid from my grandfather he had named the king and the artisan as well but i dont exactly remember the names correctly. Hope this helps.

Actually it's the queen who out of eagerness insisted the king to open the door after not hearing the sound of wood being craved which was audible in earlier days..Out of curiosity whether the carpenter is alive or not due to starvation (since he was old) she told to the king that if the carpenter dies then they would be a part of the sin. So finally the king opened the door what they saw that the deities were half made ( with no hands and legs) n the carpenter ws missing..it seemed that it might be the fate of the lord or the lord himself wanted to be worshipped as such.🙏

@@satyenderkumar6798 Excellent question. Jagannath is Lord's ecstatic form of love. In hindi His 'bhava'. Jagannath unka bhava rupa hai. For His devotees.
Once, the queens in Dwarka wanted to understand whom Krishna keeps missing. Krishna would go to sleep. But call out names of Radharani and gopis in his sleep. The residents of Vrindavan.
They wanted to understand about Vrajavasis whom Lord couldn't forget amidst all His luxury. Lord's opulence and wealth is like Narayana of Vaikuntha. He is no ordinary prince. He was receiving service of queens who were as good as Laxmi. (They were indeed expansions of Laxmi). What could ail their Lord?
So, they asked mother Rohini. Rohini the mother of Balarama had lived in Vrindavan and seen first hand the loving dealings of the Lord with Vrajavasis.
But she warned them, i would explain but Krishna and Balaram should not come inside. If they hear how Vrajavasis are practically mad in separation from the Lord They would leave them to return to Vrindavana. So, it was decided that Subhadra would guard the door and stop Krishna and Balaram from entering.
After that she started explaining about Vrajavasis love for the Lord. Vrindavan's dealings with the Lord is different from any other dealings. In other places, He is the Lord. But in Vrindavan He is son, friend or lover. His cowherd friends would ride on His shoulders, wrestle and even defeat Him. Yasoda can bind Him by her love and the Lord whom even Yamaraja fears, can fear a stick in her hand. Elderly gopis can make child Krishna dance like a puppet by clapping.
Vrajavasis love for Lord is unmixed with feelings of servitude or knowledge of greatness of the Lord. They are such devotees that they forget God is God.
She explained how Vrajavasis can't forget Lord for a moment and in His absence are practically mad with grief. Hoping for Lord's return.
While this was going on Krishna and Balarama appeared but Subhadra stopped Them from entering the door. But all three were practically still hearing about Vrajavasis' love. They were engrossed in hearing.
On hearing about their love Their bodies changed. Just like our bodies change when we are affected by emotion. We can experience some of it under intense emotion. Shivering, tears in eyes, hair standing up, etc.
Lord's body is original, eternal and shows all emotions. We can show some of that for we are designed after Him. Even Bible agrees that man is made after the image of God.
So, all three of Them changed into these three beautiful forms unseen ever before. And right then Narada muni appeared.
He offered prayers and obeisances. Praised this extraordinary and beautiful form. And asked for the boon of appearing in this form for benefit of His devotees. And the Lord agreed to do so in Puri.
Afterwards, this pastime with Viswakarma happened so that Lord's form would stay unfinished so that Lord's word to Naradaji would stay true.
You can see Jagannath. He is the Lord who is anxiously missing His loving devotees. His eyes are wide open wanting to see them. You can see that there's a black centre surrounded by white, surrounded by red circle. Our tear ducts or reddish part is at the bottom. But His encircles the entire eye. His hands are extended, ever ready to embrace His devotee.

Thank you Rick and Korbin for this video. I am from Odisha and I feel proud that you got introduced to our culture. Lord Jagannath is considered as a living God in the hindu culture. Rath Yatra is a chariot festival where Lord Jagannath along with his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra visit their aunt's house. This happens after they recover from a fever that they had got while bathing. You might have noticed in the video that the Lord bathes in 108 pitches of water. So after having bath in such a huge amount of water, any person would have fever. Hence, Lord Jagannath like any other normal person got fever and after his recovery, he went to his aunt's house on a chariot (rath). The chariots are made fresh every year and rath yatra is held every year. After rath yatra, the chariot is dismantled and the wood is used in the Royal kitchen for preparing food for the devotees. Nabakalebar or the making of new bodies of the devotees occur after every 19 years. Like a normal person, Lord Jagannath is believed to leave his old body and reincarnate his soul in a new body. This reincarnation happens every 19 yrs. I hope I could clear some of your doubts.
    Jai Jagannath

Good comment. I would like to add that science works due to Jagannath.
In Bhagavad Gita He says, "There is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread."
      B.G. 7.7
In a necklace, we can see pearls. But we don't usually see the string which holds it together. Similarly, God or Jagannath is unseen within the mysterious tapestry of nature itself.
He holds all of it together while pervading everything and all existence. One of His names is Visnu. Meaning all pervading. (Sort of like the Force for Star Wars nerds out there. Except the Force is simultaneously a person as well). Being the Absolute or Final Truth God is simultaneously personal and impersonal.
Somewhat like a government which is largely impersonal with departments and systems but headed ultimately by a person. President, prime minister, king, etc.
So, whom we are looking at is the Supreme Person. Scientific laws work underneath Him, and work or fail as to His sweet desire.

The word juggernaut comes from the Hindi 'Jagannath' meaning 'lord of the world'. The word is further derived from the Sanskrit 'jagati' meaning 'he goes' and 'natha' meaning 'master'. The word juggernaut first appeared in Western writing around 1321 but didn't become a common English word until the early 19th century.

To answer Korbin's question it takes around 2 months by the carpenters to create the Chariots. Because Akshaya Tritiya mostly falls in April and they being traditional carpenters know the art of Chariot creation very well. And can create the chariots with ease because that is how they serve the Lord.

Rath means Chariot and yatra means festival. It is the biggest festival in Odisha. Yes it was celebrated yesterday here in Puri. But it was celebrated with keeping the social distancing in mind. No persons were allowed to attain the festival. It was only done by the priest and the Police force . The Chariots were pulled by the priests instead of common people.

Fun fact: This is where the word "Juggernaut" is derived!!! Because the "rath" or cart when being drawn, is very difficult to stop. So a lot of people will die due to this. Hence , the Britishers called it "Juggernaut"

    • @sushreepadhi
      @sushreepadhi 4 роки тому +15

Juggernaut means a powerful and overwhelming force actually the Britishers didn't understand what was the main reason that people flocked to Puri and they got to know about Lord Jagannath thus they created a word "Juggernaut" meaning powerful and overwhelming force.

No foreigners or muslims are allowed in to enter the temple. As there is a prophecy that in future one great devotee will come from foreign land and Lord Jagganath will go with him. But Lord Jaggnath(meaning in English Lord of Universe) is very merciful. He comes out of his home and give opportunity to all people to see him. Its believed if any human get to see this Rath Yatra once in his lifetime and render some service to Lord. His soul will get liberation, not born in material world. And will get free path to spiritual world to God's home. I am happy 😊, I got such opportunity. Due to effort of ISCKON, now Rath Yatra festivals are celebrated all over the world.
