  • What is Surrealism? And what did it become in the hands of women artists? The Surrealist gallery is one of the most visited in the Museum. Surrealism connects our daily lives to the world of fantasy, dreams, and desire. While figures like Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Max Ernst are often the names that come to mind, a host of intriguing women were associated with the Surrealist movement that emerged between the World Wars, including Claude Cahun, Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, Meret Oppenheim, and Remedios Varo. These artists both championed Surrealist ideas and pushed against them to create work in which they could explore their unconscious mind and worldly identity.
Tune in to a live Q&A with senior curator Anne Umland and Abbi Jacobson exploring the stories of women surrealist artists on Monday, November 23 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Sometimes I can't believe that us women should try to prove the most obvious thing which is equality with men :))) such great works and such great artists. Thanks for this informative video.

Great feature! Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington definitely need more recognition.

Their sense of endless possibility is what we like the most about surrealist women artists. This was just lovely to watch, thank you!

Frida’s self portrait with cut hair is phenomenal 🥰 every visit to MoMA warrants a visit to that work of art
    You can feel her pain

The Tate Modern exhibition of Dorothea Tanning was a surrealism nirvana. Outstanding range of worlds and design.

I loved the fact that art has meaning behind them and my favorite was Frieda Kahlo; the self portrait and the story she explained behind it.

Kahlo's works attack my feelings erosively. I can see her dimensions of expression, her pain, diary-of-her-life thing, .. A woman herself who cut hair makes me think of another man who hurt himself cutting an ear. The painting still comes out art & beautiful.
For this clip, you show the totally different styles of female works. This makes me enjoy the art exhibition much. Thank you. 😊

Question: can we discuss the social statements within the pieces of these women? I’m interested in those social statements that have not changed, thereby, making this art especially relevant today. On a personal side note, Abbi, I love your work. It’s fun to see you as I’m also an artist and your mom’s high school buddy.

woman artist here, very familiar with all the artists mentioned except for the last one, who I would love to learn more about and especially see more work! and I so wish this was 2 hrs long instead of a teaspoon, or maybe a teacup's worth of amazing women pioneers. ;)
when our guide finished my viseral response was Yes! bring it, Mama! :D

Thank you, I especially like these works as they are indicative of life changes, whether at someone’s beck and call or cutting ties, everything changes, but it looks better done by a woman.😊

Surprised you couldn't show viewers a Leonora Carrington piece. You demean her and women Surrealists in general by omitting her work.

Very biased curatorial interpretation of surrealism. Many women artist were into phantasy or primitivism, not surrealism.
