    In this video. I am talking about an old and common technique of compositing old and new footage together used in the 'Dhoom tana' song from the movie Om Shanti Om, also giving some examples of framing and scale and how these things translate beyond movies in terms of creative usage. I hope you like this video and got some value out of it. Thank you for watching.

    IN ETERNALS, I think the reason why it is looking so massive is due to the angle. For celestial, they are making us feel that we are looking at it from a lower level but in the case of the girl, we feel that the girl is at the same level as us. In the movies, this technique is also used to show someone's dominance as well. The camera is kept at a low level and at an inclined angle to show someone's dominance and opposite to show subservience.

    14:23 maybe because the camera position is low and the character's head is a little tilted downwards which shows that the character is observing a tiny object and maybe the red colour added to his grand appearance

    The Eternals thing looks big probably because of small scale detail... Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) did that with their miniature ships to make them look massive on screen... By adding a lot of little lights...

    Vho big isiliye diktha hai ki, that girl looked like she she have normal speed but in that celestial condition he is slow and camara angle bhi neche se upar ki taraf hai. Aur badi chise slow moove karthe hai chote ke comparison mai.
    And they didn't showed his full body aur vho frame ki bahar jaraha tha. It make him feel bigger without any small object.

    Let's see
    Big celestiall
    If we face a huge, hulking guy, we have a perception that our eye line is going to meet his shoulder or chest first and that subtle tilt in the perspective sells the shot
    Also, if there's a massive object that we want to capture, we often go for a wide angle shot
    That wide angle is supposed to add barrel distortion which we don't see here
    It creates the illusion that the focal length is unchanged and the object is simply that much far away as to fill the frame and still his shoulder meet the lateral edges of the frame. That paired with an entity looking down towards the camera that the audience expect not to change its position or altitude after the previous shot is what I think makes him look so big.
    Light also interacts very differently with the actress as compared to the celestial.
    And the classic movie magic
    Large objects move very slowly 🤣

  • @podcast_central69
    @podcast_central69 2 роки тому +85

    I think the reason why the celestial looks so big is because the way light interacts with it, since on the girl's face the light covers most of her face, but for the celestial, from the same angle, the light covers less than half of his face.
    And also those asteroid/stars like things in the background's spiral setting help sell the effect really well.

    • @vedantsharma48
      @vedantsharma48 2 роки тому +6

      Nice observation but still there are many things not only just lighting which is making that shot so much BIG like camera angle, texture material and also the design of celestial.

      @kalind bro, I agree...
      . As the perspective and the angle of Orange ray defines itself... Also in 1st shot, the girl's facial expression and eyeball Creates a tense situation with dramatic background sound the shot 2 has been created by ant level eye view... which subconsciously define the size of the monster
      so ya that makes sense

    14:05 I think It is because of some points that I have observed:
    1. Because of the lower camera angle.
    2. Head room is very low, that makes it uncomfortable for audience. And make it massive somewhere.
    3. Both the sides of the subject are cut by the frame, that makes it huge.
    4. That 6 dots like on his face make it looks big.
    5. It is in the dominance area of the frame.
    6. Red color with the glow make it BOLD.
    7. It's structure is matches to the rocks and mountains, So at the back of mind it becomes similar to rocks.
    8. And the story, when that girl see upwards and suddenly the subject shown from lower angle.
    9. On his left ear, that sharp reflection of yellow light is like a reflection on wall.
    10. Camera move slowly that depicts a huge object.

    I think there are 2 primary reasons why the Eternal looks so big and grand
    1) Slower speed: Big things usually have a slower speed on camera as compared to smaller objects (for example, giant man in civil war). Camera pan is also slower when the celestial is onscreen whereas it's a bit faster with the girl
    2) Parallax: The way we analyse an object big or small is in reference to the backdrop behind it. The shot with the celestial cleverly utilises the Z axis (perpendicular to your screen) to give a feeling of grandness. If you look closely inside the chest of the celestial, you'll notice how the depth in his chest moves with respect to the camera pan. So the way the elements react in the Z axis with respect to the camera pan gives us an illusion of the size.
    Those are my 2 cents.... Really loved your insights brother.

  • @ShreyTyagi

    In the Eternals shot, the scale is established because of the shallow depth of field. Girls left shoulder is slightly out of focus and so is the background. The background is not completely out of focus but you can see the space gas clouds and the stars are out of focus. However, whole shot of the giant is in focus because in wide shots of big things there is no bokeh.
    Also, the low angle shot of the giant makes the scale more prominent.

    14:17 when the camera shifts from the girl to the celestial, the camera appears to be the perspective of the girl(it appears to the audience like that) and we think that the celestial is extremely massive compared to the girl.
    Just my thoughts Shamim bhai🙂

  • @bhagawath9026

    The Celestial looks massive because they have used a wide angle lens (we can change focal length in 3D softwares), filming it from a lower angle and only showing a part of the character (suggesting that it's too big to be captured in one photo). These are all camera tricks. This is why the Jaeger's in first Pacific Rim looked huge but the second movie could not capture the same magic.

    I think the Eternal's Celestial looks that massive because of the Perspective thing i don't know the technical word but it is something related to showing things far and near that thing is intelligently used in
    1 the frame by making it full frame and just covering it's head and some part so that there is a thought in subsconcious mind that it is massive
    2. The camera Angle
    3. The perspective ratio it which it is framed as wide in lower side and slightly converging gradually as going up to head

  • @darshjoshi1641
    @darshjoshi1641 2 роки тому +5

    14:36 I think it's the lighting. It definitely has something to do with sharp shadows. The sharp shadow shows deep spaces/crevices which can't be filled by bounce light because it's very far from the nearest surface. Complete darkness on the opposite side of face shows that it's so big the light source can't envelope light around it (as we see on the actress before, back side of face also cover with soft light). Also we see everything from above the bellybutton level and that definitely makes it look Massive.

  • @rohansingh8444
    @rohansingh8444 2 роки тому +4

    my guess would be the lightwork on the right shoulder- cuz its clear that the source of the light is somewhere behind on the right, but the way it illuminates the shoulder make it seem like the curvature is very less, thus making it look big...
    just a wild guess

  • @vmrl99
    @vmrl99 2 роки тому +1

    I think one of the reasons is the ratio of sizes of head, shoulders and torso. And also has someone mentioned in the comments, the way light interacts also helps. The object doesn't look like it's illuminated by one light source. There are several and the fact that irl we see huge statues interact the same way with light helps us judge this as huge

    14:37 it looks so massive big! Cuz of very clever reasons behind this shot!
    *1. *The simple n effective thing is, they made that look like a Sun* (we can see fire, red, etc stuff inside it)
    So brain will take it as a massive model of solar system!*
    2nd thing is, *Colouring and Lightning!* It played a really important role!
    3rd thing, the *Geometry* the camera angle is showing from a tiny girl, so we can see only his chest n below, can't sholders!
    We can see they made that, giant thing in TRIANGLE, Which looks like 🏔️⛰️ huge mountain, or pyramid!
    Animators know how to fool brain perfectly with their knowledge!

    For the Big Celestiall, Apart from wide angle low shot what I think it gives perspective of hughness is the subtle background difference. The stars which we see in background is somewhat like milky way which we see..usually they would only curve when seen through large space. And this put perspective of largness in shot. And our mind subconsciously percive this as a large subject.

    It's because that object occupies more of the background. It has more mass and coverage as compared to the another scene. You can try it yourself, take a object and place it in front of a background. Now take a close-up pic of the object where the object occupies more space than the background and now take a pic in same background but from a distance, where the background occupies more space comparatively.
    It's all just an optical illusion.

    This is just my rough guess but I think that the Celestial being looks so much massive because, mainly 🔸1)The camera angle used is a fish eye view (low-angle shot) which automatically puts the viewer beneath the object. 🔸2)The camera movement i.e. down to up which gives us the feeling of "revealing" process. 🔸3)The shot intentionally skips to cover the maximum part of the object, it makes us think that this object must have been so gigantic that it can't even fit in a single frame/view. 🔸4)We see a band & ring of comets, asteroids/ planets behind the celestial that is so tiny that it intuitively reminds us of the ring around the Saturn, or the Milky Way galaxy(Earth's POV) which already are humongous entities & the placement of the celestial makes it appear as it's so huge that these things around it (some are in the foreground) are so tiny. & Additionally 🔸5)most of the viewers have already know or seen the celestial beings previously in comics, GOTG, & promotional movie posters, so this already have created the impact on our mind that these creatures are insanely gigantic. So these all factors works together here... That was it!🙂

    Also, the shot depicts space which kind'a triggers humanly feelings towards the shot, as space is commonly thought of as massive & endless.

    Firstly the angle with which the cg shot of the celestial was made makes it look huge also the way light interacts with it gives an illusion that although the camera is moving at a decent speed it takes much more time to illuminate different parts of its body kinda like how you can travel kilometres but still through your perspective the sun or clouds will be at the same position you saw them before. The last thing would be the speed, generally miniature sets in movies are shot at a higher frame rate and then slowed down to create the illusion of the object having more mass similarly in this shot the asteroids and debris are moving faster than the celestial.

    In that eternal trailer..there are few techniques which are contributing the massive size is..1st of all the camera angle as you said, when we see the galactus we see it from really low angle which makes it look bigger and when we see the eternal (girl) we see her from a bit upper angle, second is the light it’s contribution is small but yet important, the girl is fully lit with good light which tell us that the light source is much bigger than her and it is in space so our mind thinks it is something like sun…but wen we see galactus it looks like he is lit with light which comparatively is nit that hug…now we know the only source of light is something as big as sun and still galatus make it seems smaller it gives us feeling that he is massive, 3rd when we see the girls the lens used is compressed and we see more blur background and when we see galatus the lens is a bit wide and we see less blurred background. We can do that experiment with our phone click a close up picture of something small like a coin with your smartphone camera keeping the coin in focus, the background of that picture will really too much blur but if we click a picture of building which is big from a far away distance with the same phone focusing on the building still the background behind the building will also be in focus. This is my speculation for why galactus looks big here. 🤗 I really like you content thank you so much brother 😊

    Actually in eternals , as the girl looks up it adds the feel but it looks massive more because if we see a giant object we have to move our head from straight to up to see full object , this camera motion is used in this scene (what i think ) , the camera is not moving too much but slightly and it adds the feel that it's massive . By the way helpful video 👍👍😃

    There is a technique in filmmaking where to make look a character massive or scary low camera angle (or the perspective of the person who is haunted or scared by the massive character) is used and to make things look small and timid high camera angle is used so I think that technique is used here as also the Celestial (name of the creature in this video) feels like is looking down

    I think the celestial object in front of him towards right shoulder makes him look much bigger... the way light overs the whole object and only a little part of his face helps a lot.... camera angle lighting and galaxy things are also there....

    Parallax is making the Eternal shot massive... Look at the movement of camera and the character. Our eyes are trained to judge the Parallax effect which is helping here in this shot.

    my thought about the celestial scene.........i think its about the camera angle..we assume to be at the place of camera observing celestial from below without any depth of field...which gives us sence of large size about the celestial

    Because this shot is low angle shot,by using this shot we can make a subject more dominating towards the object in any particular scene which requires this type of monopolies.

    The celestial looks big because of shadows and light and detailing in its body and eyes

    It looks big because of the very slow movement because very heavy and massive things tend to be slow in movement, (Important) -- and because of the asteroid belt (140 million miles distance) behind that thing.

    In this clip of eternals trailer they have kept same back ground for both. But when they show the girl its a zoomed in shot of her as well as the background is a bit magnified, but the celestial ( the giant creature) the camera angle is set in 40-60° angle taken from the bottom of creature while the background stars appears smaller than the magnified background of woman, which makes it appear huge. Also you can notice the structure of creature scales up pyramidically upwards which is a normal technique to make something appear big. ( As you can notice the creature body becomes small as it goes up, so if we see it individually head looks way smaller then the bottomost body part contributing in the effect )
    ( Also the hands of creature is near to camera, also the small stars contribute to make it look huge)

    Pro tip :- If you want to stop any zombie from despawning but you don't have any nametag, you can give zombie anything which he can put in his hand like any one block, any tool, etc things in Minecraft

    The simple thing behind that is the camera is tilted upwards & they are using the whole wide screen

    This is what I think
    The sudden switch b/w GIRL and CREATURE make us feel like we're looking from same point to the girl then the creature. That virtual point (where the camera was placed) was at higher angle for the girl and lower angle for the creature. ALSO filling the frame and cutting the creature from sides made it look bigger in frame. On the other hand Girl's fram have lot of negative space making her small.

    Hey i think that externals shot has something to done with lightning and the celestial face who is looking down this maybe the reason

  • @panchalyash

    In my opinion the subject looks big cause the object around it looks so small. And they always show sky as the background.
    I think this the reason😀

    Bhai voh celestial bada isliye lag raha hai, kyu ki hum sab ne uske jaise character ko Guardian's of the galaxy movie main already bade size main dekha hai. Isliye hum automatically assumption laga lete hai ki it's a big thing.
