      James Lindley funny...I was watching footage of old British trucks & thought, ‘ how come we don’t make our own beautiful vehicles anymore?’ The only answer I could come up with is , because of the EU!

      This member of the Commonwealth(Canada) would like nothing better than to see quality British goods exported to Canada again....its sad when the only thing British made I see these days is candy. A Commonwealth Common market would be a win/win for everyone, methinks.....

      Off-shoring of manufacturing, because of cheaper labour costs and power costs, was happening far far before we joined the EU. The U.K. doesn’t have a captive market to export goods to anymore, like we used to in colonial times, and nor can many manufacturers within the U.K. compete with an internal market against foreign made goods. This was actually better in the EU, cos British companies had a 500million person market they could easily sell to, now it’s only 59million, look at the shellfish industry now, exports to the EU have dropped 68% or something. That’s catastrophic, hopefully it will come back up a bit, but it’s going to be harder for businesses now. The U.K. has a high-skill high-cost workforce and makes complex items when we do manage successful exports, I don’t think lorries hit the mark.

    I have just came across this video, absolutely fantastic seeing the old Atki’s again. It brought back many many happy memories, my dad drove for Smith of Maddiston and when I was a boy I always remember the sound of his two peddle Beaver or Badger. We lived in the country and dad always came home on a Saturday, I would sit and listen for his lorry coming up the hill through the woods, then I would run out and he would stop. He would lift me into the passenger side then we would go about a mile so he could turn and come back and park at the house. Unfortunately my dad died when I was twelve but we had a haulage company about 2 miles from where I lived, when I was about 14 I used to walk to they’re yard and watch all the lorries which were mostly Atki’s with Cummins engines, that was it I was hooked on the Cummins engine, the owner of the business knew I was from the next village, he told me if I told my mum then I could go for a run with a driver. That was it for me, worked there till I left school then started with Smith of Maddiston as a loader in the yard, we used to shunt the lorries for loading and trunk and I just loved a Guy with a fuller box and the Cummins engine, passed my test at 21 and my first trip out on the road was with a Guy and a Cummins engine so that was me, now retired but still love the sound of the Cummins engine.
    Thank you for this video.
    Kind regards
    Johnny

    I remember going in the lorry with my dad. On a few occasions two lorries would set off together, heading for the same place. One would be fastest on the flat and the other would pull harder uphill. It was constant passing one another.

    I remember as a kid back in the sixties and seventies seeing hundreds of these Atkinsons all around East London and the docks, I especially have fond memories of those owned by Suttons of St-Helens who had a depot local to me in East London, there was no better sight on a sunny day than a shiny red Suttons Atkinson, and the sound, oh that beautiful sound.

      In the mid 70's I used to do a regular trunk from Watford to Manchester and Alf Sutton had a contract to carry what I assume to have been rolls of paper using a mix of 6LX powered Defenders and 6LXB powered Borderers. Going up the hill on the M6 at Keele the 8 wheelers would be down to about 25mph while the artics could manage about 30. Alf had a sign in the yard that read 'Time and tide stands still for no man' but it almost did at Keele.

    • @martinwebb1681

      @@mikeprzyrembel ... Yes those giant rolls of paper were for the press to print the daily newspapers on, Suttons were daily regulars down at fleet street in London delivering those rolls of paper along with other operators like Convoys, Milehams, Haseldons, etc, in the days where everything was done with flat trailers and tarpaulin sheets.

    What a shame Atkinson were bought out by Seddon, the rot really set in then because they were completely different types of Lorry builders, Atkis were quality all the way through and always had a full order book because of that, their customers were loyal to them until that take over and that's when it all went pear shaped, Seddon should have stuck to what they knew instead of meddling in a market they knew nothing about which brought about the demise of both company's, Gardner didn't help either with their restricted supply of engines and made these Lorry manufactures turn to Cummins and Rolls Royce and that left the door open to Scania and Volvo who now dominate the market here in the UK.

    • @martinwebb1681
      @martinwebb1681 Рік тому

      Actually its Daf that dominates the UK market followed by Scania and Volvo. The majority of the Daf trucks built at Leyland here in the UK are sold here but are also sold to 51 other countries around the world, its a shame that the many now defunct British owned Lorry manufacturers couldn't have had the same success as the Dutch have had building their Dafs here in Britain.

      @@martinwebb1681 The only reason that DAF have got a foothold in this country is the waiting list for Scania and Volvo,I remember the the early days when DAF first came to this country and what a Bag of Shit they were,anyone with half a brain would Never buy a DAF in preference to either a Scania or a Volvo,some of the 2800 and 3300 DAFS were quite good but the 2300 was gutless as a lot of buyers found out.

      @@davidellis279 ... Daf 2800, 3300, 2300, blimey you're going back a bit. Daf currently has over 30% of the UK market, it sells more than twice the amount of heavy goods vehicles sold by Scania and Volvo here in the UK.

    Looking back at the video I can see why someone gave it the thumbs down. Go back to the footage when these Atkinson’s we’re leaving the first lay-by. It’s looks to me the last Atki slowed the progress of that lorry coming up the road. That’s the only thing I saw to make me think that this manoeuvre upset someone. In the early 80's i worked at a large tile company in Nth London. They had a large fleet of tired Ford d's and Bedfords. When we had large deliveries from Uk companys the artics were old Seddons, Fodens and Fords. All had a hard life. One day a truck pulled in from Italy. It was a brand new F12. All the drivers just stopped and stared and climbed inside for a look. It was amazing. Other trucks from abroad, Scania's, DAFS and Migurus Deutz, all curtain siders and they al looked amazing alongside our tired efforts!
