  • A 1v7 FFA where I can use just one hero. This video was a lot shorter than most of my other ones because the match was relatively straightforward with Kyrre. Overall, this was a rather hectic match from start to finish, with an ending that is definitely worth watching.

      Even a couple of years ago, I used to focus my control on one hero, too. But I started observing how others played competitive Heroes III on Twitch and I learned a fair bit from watching them play.
      Nowadays, we can look at this "challenge" as a challenge for me in particular since I'm so used to having multiple heroes at once. ;D

      @@TheKnownWorld I first played Heroes 5 at my friend's when I was a teen (3 is nearly as old as me) and it was the first RTS game I've ever enjoyed. I was pretty bad at it, would always just one hero wonder it and camp at my base most of the time waiting until I had a full army only to get bodied by the AI because I had no sense of actual strategy. Played it a little more and dropped it, saw Sseth's review for this game and I thought it looked pretty charming and heard about the damn near fanatical following so I picked it up and I've got to say it's one of my favorite games now. I still went back to my old one hero strategy (maybe 2 at a stretch) but after seeing you play I've started micromanaging 4-5 at a time. I'm still getting the hang of it but watching your videos has made it a lot easier!

    I've also always played like this. My main strat was to hopefully get TP along with Expert Earth. Those were essential. A bonus was getting the Shackles of War, since the AI would normally flee from combat with their scouts.

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  5 років тому +8

      That makes sense. Expert Earth makes the game much, much easier overall. Shackles of War is great from preventing foes from fleeing, although there's been a couple times where I've locked myself into combat with an opponent I can't beat. ;)

      TheKnownWorld for starters you wouldnt have gotten stuck with diplo that you couldnt use. xD I think I would have held out for offense but since it never came I guess I would have gotten screwed as well. It also cracked me up that you never got prayer

    • @xXxDeadShadowxXx
      @xXxDeadShadowxXx 7 років тому +1

      TheKnownWorld because I think air magic is a (almost) must have in a "perfect" hero and considering a ranger can't get fire magic to replace air I would have totally stayed with air. Offense was a good replacement too but who knows what the random number God had in store for you :)

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 років тому +8

      To be honest, I didn't expect Kyrre to get offered two secondary skills that were virtually useless given the rules of this match. Besides, I wasn't just holding off for Offense, but for Tactics as well. I can live with the fact that I never got Prayer, though.
      Part of why I opted not to take Air Magic is because I had no intention of using Dimension Door or Fly, leaving Haste as the main reason for bothering with Air Magic in the first place. Partly because I wanted to try out a new strategy for once, I banked on getting Prayer at some point later on in the match, which would have been a good substitute for Haste. Of course, this never happened, and using Expert Haste on my army probably would have been more effective in the end.
      I'm glad you enjoyed the gameplay, Damon! :)

      In my Necropolis 1v7 video, I used Vampire Lords as another prominent unit as well. Liches and Black Knights made an appearance there, too.
      The AI in the Small Map 1v7 video didn't get nearly as much time to build up their armies as I would give them in a match where I can only use Skeletons.

      @@janus3555 From what I remember it's resource gathering /faster exploration reasons, I was pretty surprised too when I played my first match outside of our local league (Well it was kind of a leaderboard thing between 24-32 people for a few years with a few special rules like only up to three heroes are allowed per player but most players just settled with two heroes and occasionally one) , though honestly I was never that interested in competitive scene (well apart from the mentioned 'league' which a few players made) I was more interested in PvE maps but I do think in competitive they create 6+ heroes for resource gathering/faster exploration but it's possible I'm wrong it's been a long time since I played HoMM3 (Moved to HoMM6 for a while now)

      Sounds interesting though :D I think QC results differ quite a bit depending where you put what stacks and whatnot, would need to strategize differently. Also, no power stack power and such. I'd watch that!

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 років тому +4

      I can confirm that Quick Combat results do depend on where you've placed your stacks. While I do find the idea of a Quick Combat Only challenge rather interesting, I still stand by my original statement. Given the demand for it, I'll consider it for the future, though.

      I’m glad that you liked the ending! But yes, using just one hero and winning the game is definitely possible. In fact, a lot of other casual Heroes III players are more familiar with using just one hero than they are with using multiple.
      I’d agree that choice of template matters, although I’m not sure which template would be “the most difficult” for the One Hero Challenge. I picked Mini-Nostalgia since I thought it would be the most interesting because of the way the map template is structured.

    • @TheKnownWorld

      I disagree. For a match like this where I was only allowed to use one hero, I had to try and make sure that my hero had optimal secondary skills. Every secondary skill slot I use up is a slot that can’t be used for useful secondary skills like Earth Magic or Tactics. Imagine if Kyrre received Navigation or Eagle Eye from that Scholar when she could’ve instead learned Armorer or Offense.
      lol, that play made by Tan AI was quite unexpected, but certainly not unwelcome.

    If you haven't finished the video, don't read this comment.
    I'm pretty confident the way to win that fight was to anti magic your behemoths, use your army to tear down his army until he's pressurized to spam Summon Earth Elemental, then dispel and just keep spending the rest of your spell points on Ressurection. Resurrection only cost 16 spell points and Summon Earth Elemental cost 24 I believe, so you would have won when he runs out of spell points. Also I believe your behemoths could've tanked 1 hit from implosion if there were 16 of them.
    Great video though! I don't think you completed the challenge, but a win is still impressive imo and fun to watch.
    EDIT:
    Ancient Behemoths: (16 × 300hp) = 4800 health.
    Implosion damage: (300 + (power × 75)) ~ (300 + (35 × 75)) = 2925 damage.
    1 implosion would have killed 9 (almost 10) of your behemoths.

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  5 років тому

      I do think that Anti-Magic probably would've been the best choice for my Ancient Behemoths, yes. Implosion was just far too much damage for them to handle early on. This would've been a much better approach than what I came up with at the time, but at least that final battle made for an interesting spectacle!
      Technically speaking, I lost the challenge since I actually had to "hire" a hero (even if it was my main hero), but I feel like getting Kyrre back again made for a much more entertaining conclusion to the match than just ending the match after the battle in which I was defeated. Regardless of whether you think I "completed" the challenge or not, I'm quite satisfied with the outcome of the match and I would guess you were too. Cheers!

    You need to grab resources as you move around. Not saying you have to travel far to get something specifically, but you have a habit of omitting to pick up resources that’s basically next to your hero when you move them around. Then when you try to build something in your town, you’d suddenly realize you don’t have enough of something and then trying to scramble for them. Also, when you leave resources behind, your enemy heroes can pick them up when they venture down. So not a good habit!

      Thanks for reply. I have a question though, if you'd be so kind to answer:
      In your games the auto-combat doesn't seem to be using your mana, but in my games the AI uses mana extensively in even the easiest fights. How can I prevent that besides taking the fight manually?

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 років тому

      Good question! When you enter a battle, click on Combat Options (the button in the bottom-left corner which has a laptop as its icon) and uncheck "Spells". This should prevent the Auto Combat AI from using spells.

    I know it's awful of me to say it, but... in all honesty... for the amount of thinking you do (even with only one hero in this challenge)... you play fairly poorly. :)
    Your overall strategies aren't TOO bad, but the way you forget key things, bank on luck (not luck in the game btw), arrange troops (when without tactics), and neglect splitting your higher level (>HP) troops to tank damage in order to preserve them for the endgame definitely wreck you!
    Additionally, taking on wandering enemy groups (or even enemy castles!!) that deal ferocious losses to higher level troops only prolongs your ability to win campaigns--MOST of the time.
    Either way... as someone who's followed and played every M&M and HoM&M since all of their beginnings, I VERY MUCH APPLAUD YOU for continuing to play this amazing series of games to this day! Bless JVC and his awesome series... it was a shame when things fell apart after HoM&M IV... :(

    Just one tiny little thing. Whenever you're expert in water magic, have teleport, and need a finisher, use teleport, NOT Magic arrow.

      Sorry if that came out of nowhere in a slightly arrogant tone, I just get nervous whenever I see people finishing fights with damage spells when another option is at hand (Haste, Teleport) it can turn out ugly real fast.

      No worries! Having run into this same blunder myself in previous years (but forgetting to take measures to prevent this as of recent), I can see why you would recommend using Haste or Teleport with such enthusiasm.
      As for Heroes III being a "neverending game", I absolutely agree. One of the reasons why I love the game so much in the first place is that every adventure in it is different. It's nice to hear that you're enjoying my content! :)

      TheKnownWorld Yes I do :-) tbh whenever I take a look at your channel (mostly weekends) and there's no new uploads it feels a little bad to me, although, it's my fault because I don't usually follow streams, for whatever reason.
      About Hom&m3, well, I don't think I'll stop playing it in my life, I'm not talking "nonstop" of course, but it's not just the kind of thing that ends in a shelf getting dusty. It's like Chess, you don't really "finish" it. Of course the new entries don't exactly encourage to move to the newest game... they're just... different, although, I've enjoyed H4.

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 років тому +1

      To be honest, I've refrained from pumping out videos all the time not just because I lack the time to do so, but also so that I keep my viewers in suspense. Ha! Take that. :P
      But really, I don't think you should feel "bad" about having to wait. Try to look at my videos as something to look forward to once a month. It's almost like waiting for a new episode to come out for a TV show that you enjoy watching. Of course, my videos are longer and less frequent than the episodes of TV shows, but you get the point. Also, I think that you might enjoy the streams if you checked them out sometime, especially since you'd get a chance to talk to both myself and other Heroes III enthusiasts (and trolls, I suppose).
      Indeed, Heroes III will probably hold a special place in my life for as long as I live. It's that awesome game that you'd just keep coming back to because it's that awesome, which I really enjoy about it. The newer entries in the Heroes of Might and Magic series don't feel particularly appealing for myself either, but I have to confess that Heroes IV was what turned me away from the sequels in the first place.

    You only have one hero, so it would be a good habit to pick up ALL of the gold and resources along the way, as you no longer have secondary heroes to pick them up for you. If you don’t do it and leave the gold and resources lying around, then you will be short of gold and resources (and having to trade at exorbitant rates), and what’s worse, a wandering enemy hero can come around to mop them up.

      Yeah, ignoring that ending sounds like a good plan to me. You saw nothing! :|
      As you pointed out, Gunnar would have been a great candidate for this challenge as well. Actually, Gunnar was the third hero that came to mind when I first started thinking about who I wanted to use for this challenge (for thematic reasons, Solmyr and Tyraxor came first). But I shelved him since I already used Dungeon for the Siege Survival.
      This match took longer than I thought it would, especially since my practice runs went more quickly than this one did. Why are you asking if I'm a masochist? :P

      I ask because a lot of these challenges are a pain... especially the tier 1 challenge I mean honestly I am starting to think you like to suffer. Isn't every day Canada day over there? I also have a "challenge" suggestion. play a large map like this on easy mode. I did this the other day because I was curious just to see how bad the ai was. I lost because my heroes got cancer from being exposed to so much incompetence.

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 років тому

      lol, perhaps I am a masochist. That's probably why I deal with the trolls on my Twitch streams every Saturday. ;)
      In all seriousness, I've only done two challenges so far. Apart from the duration of the Siege Survival, it's been smooth sailing so far. We'll have to wait until the next few challenges to see how badly I actually suffer. Besides, people seem to enjoy watching these, so I'm not going to complain too much about it. :P
      Every day around here is indeed a "Canada day", but only one Canada Day is actually a holiday. I have no comment regarding your "challenge" proposition.

  • @liamgray5324
    @liamgray5324 7 років тому

    Weird suggestion, only tier 6 units (or potentially tier 5 or 7 but though they might be too easy)
    100% difficulty due to not being able to take fights initially
    allowed single first teir units on heroes so they can actually exist initially
    may be completely unbalanced but could be quite different
    great videos, keep them up :)

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 років тому

      Thank you!
      Regarding your suggestion, “quite different” in what way? I would argue that the Only Tier 1 Units Challenge would be interesting because of the assumed level of difficulty necessary in amassing a viable army of low-end troops. However, Only Tier 6 Units would be somewhat typical of how I already play. Also, how would using just Tier 5s be easier than Tier 6s if they’re one tier lower? This is a very strange proposition, indeed.

    • @liamgray5324
      @liamgray5324 7 років тому

      TheKnownWorld
      Hmm I guess it depends on how teir one unit challenge goes, I'm assuming you would rush the ai but I could be wrong, it was based off the idea that you wouldn't be able to fight anything for the first week and then be limited
      I have realised that teir 5 was what I was meaning (sorry) as I was attempting to avoid wyverns for obvious reasons
      This may be slightly based of the idea that the teir one challenge isn't possible, but likely you may prove that wrong
      Good luck for it anyway and hope it is released soon
      Sorry for my mess up

    Love the gameplay! As I'm Norwegian I do wanna point out one thing which is a bit funny. Kyrre is a male name here in Norway, so your hero is actually a very young man, not a little girl.

    As a person who played this game when i was younger and doesnt quite have the experience with the game as you do, it would be nice if you could explain what items/heroes/mechanics does a bit more. You do this already a lot, which is really good! But sometimes your like "oh i found artifact X, awesome!!", like its obvious for all of your veiwers why this artifact is so awesome. Maybe it is obvious for most of your veiwers, but there is still newbies like me out there who are really curious about the in-depth mechanics of this game. Thanks for awesome vids!

      Hello! It seems to me that others who commented on my recent videos have had similar requests as well. In my upcoming videos, I’ll try (although I can’t make any promises) to elaborate on the effects of artifacts/heroes/mechanics. Of course, I may not always be able to do so if I’m already in the middle of commenting on other aspects of the game, but I'll keep in mind that an added explanation would probably be helpful for those watching who aren’t as familiar with the game.
      If I recall correctly, I did this a lot more in my earlier episodes of Let’s Play Heroes III, but after a while I fell under the impression that viewers didn’t need me to go over the different items in the game. Thank you for watching my content and providing feedback!

    Month 2, first week second day. With a strong army we return to our hometown, yet we don't free it but pass it. Somtimes I wonder what our commander is thinking.
    Month 2, first week third day.We've captured a mighty city with most of it's guard away. We'll get new weapons and soon even dragons might join our army. Meanwhile our enemy has no place to recruit. Perhaps I was wrong, and the commander has outmaneuvered our foes.
    Month 2, first week fith day. The enemy managed to retake his main stronghold while our home remains in his grip. Rumors are the garrison he left was intentionally weak to lure the enemy into a trap, other speculate there was no way to pay enough guards. It may be the reason why he refuses to give us better equipment.
    *Diary of Firenze the Centaure
    About an hour in, you lost your first city, lost your main recruitment city, forgot to upgrade your centaure, have just one hero - yet you've still a good chance to win this map.

      So that he could get an honest answer, Firenze should have just asked me what I was thinking when I tactically outmaneuvered the enemy. My reply:
      "I wasn't." :')

      lol, I’d imagine that the match would’ve been even more difficult if all of the AI were grouped up against me. Either way, I’m glad you enjoyed the butt-kicking done by Jaegar. ;D

    i'd actually be interested in a challenge where you'd be forced to use spells that are generally unfavourable like quicksand, landmines, remove obstacle, sacrifice, disrupting ray, weakness, counterstrike etc
