- Russia's invasion of Ukraine has surprised many military analysts - who expected fighting to be over very quickly. Instead, the three-month-old war has exposed unexpected weaknesses in Russia's forces. Heavy troop losses are reporttedly hurting morale even more, and the war's initial aims have been severely scaled back. So just how - and why - has Russia's army performed so badly?
UK officials see Russia closing in on Luhansk
"Russia has increased the intensity of its operations in the Donbas as it seeks to encircle Severodonetsk, Lyschansk, and Rubizhne," the UK Ministry of Defense tweeted in In its latest intelligence update. At the same time, UK officials noted "strong Ukrainian resistance with forces occupying well dug-in defensive positions." "Russia’s capture of the Severodonetsk pocket would see the whole of Luhansk Oblast placed under Russian occupation," they said. At the same time moving the frontline further west "will extend Russian lines of communication and likely see its forces face further logistic resupply difficulties," according to the British ministry. Ex-Russian diplomat describes atmosphere in Russian Foreign Ministry Boris Bondarev, who until Monday was listed as the Counsellor to the UN at Russia's mission in Geneva, warned that his Russian colleagues were growing nonchalant when considering nuclear weapons' use. "They think that if you hit some village in America with a nuclear strike, then the Americans will immediately get scared and run to beg for mercy on their knees," Bondarev told the The New York Times. "That’s how many of our people think, and I fear that this is the line that they are passing along to Moscow," he added. Bondarev's job in Switzerland was focused mainly on arms control and disarmament issues.
Zaporizhzhia region to use the ruble, says Russian-backed Melitopol leader
The Russian-backed head of the military-civilian administration of occupied Melitopol, Galina Danilchenko, said that rubles will be the accepted in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to an interview cited by Russian state-run RIA news agency. Danilchenko noted that residents would be expected to exchange Ukrainian hryvnias for Russian currency. "You can pay with rubles for all the services of enterprises, purchase raw materials for the production of your own products, ship products to the buyer and receive ruble proceeds to your current account," she said.

Problem is they aren’t the superior force. Since the battle of Kiev, Ukraine has gotten their teeth kicked in. Multiple surrenders of major cities. Russia is almost done taking the Donbas and they have taken the south. Now they will work west and northwest. If you actually watch what’s going on and see territory maps on a daily basis, you’ll see the continual loss of territory.

Two come quickly to mind... both Ireland and Ukraine (exceptionally churchgoing societies) have been through a horrible era of mass starvation. The consequences of that have been very high levels of depression, to name but one after effect. Being faithful does not spare anyone the downside of trauma, we all wish it did.

In actual fact they are losing badly. Russia has overrun some of their creaking defensive lines in the east and south. The capture and surrender of the Azov battalion has been a major blow for Ukraines morale, and the blockade of Odessa is potentially fatal for the Ukrainian economy over the next month or two.

Well the Superior fighting force is on the defensive and is very unlikely to reclaim much of the 20-25% of the country occupied by the inferior Russian forces. Oh and that is half of Ukraines resources. To bad the better fighting force with is under full mobilization is unable to reclaim these lands; Ukraine will be lucky to remain existing as a state.

@@yap5995 Its actually valid intel- there are various sources you can get this intel from (albiet slightly delayed). Funker is one source, there are also a few Ukranian-owned channels on FB that give map based updates as well. All link/show where they get their Intel.
As far as what UKR needs, yes, that would assuredly assist in repelling/counter striking said assaults. It is, however, not be all end all- but would bring about faster repelling of RF forces as said requests as indeed Force Multipliers, something UKR does need desperately, and a non-stop flow at that. Thats why UKR leadership is constantly asking for said material.

Yes, sadly the world just watches while half of Ukraine is laid to waste. Thousand of innocents killed, thousands disappeared into Russia, millions with both mental & physical damage, millions with no home or job because its been destroyed. Meanwhile the west puts Ukrainians flags on social media & say Slava Ukraini....some are even starting to complain of rising prices & money spent to help them, telling them to give concessions to Russia so they can "save face". Why??? So Russia can just build back up and do it again?
The West could easily step in and stop all this or at least the UN step in to unblock Odessa or no fly zone. Russian leadership needs to know that you can't just take over any country they want to. "Russify" a whole country by replacing, relocating or killing its citizens That every country has a right to their own sovereignty. (No whataboutism please I know that some Western countries have been wrong in areas as well). If their are people who really want to be a part of Russia that's fine...go live in Russia. The US can't just go in and take part of Mexico because there are English speaking people who live there.
Yes I know Putin has his red button but Ukrainians have a way higher chance of having a tactical nuke dropped on them then the west. Ukrainians stopped the taking of Kviv alone! With just the little weapons & training that West provided post 2014. The west only started to slowly trickle in arms after Ukrainians refused to be part of Russia and showed the world that they could win. Like Zelenskyy said in his Vice interview...Ukraine wanted to be equal with Europe but they didn't know that not everyone gets it or that it would cost so much. NATO is hugging them from across the room.

There is a big difference in taking territory and holding onto it, the Orcs are learning every day that it's going to be extremely costly for them to hold onto any part of Ukraine and will never have one second of peace or security within the borders of Ukraine and no doubt are asking themselves every day is this really worth it??!

On the contrary, Russia + pro-Russian Ukraine is assaulting the front lines and gaining territory in the Donbas every day, and Russia has no difficulty in retaining its control of the territory that it has occupied in the south.
It now has almost complete control of Luhansk oblast (which is the size of Belgium), and is certain to have it in the next week of so. And having broken through the front lines in Donetsk, it is now advancing from the north, the south and the east.

Ukraine is a big country . To hold territory is difficult ,having hundreds of kilometers of front line.
The Germans had the same problems in WWII ,supply line stretched for thousands of kilometers.
Germany had to supply a 4 million man force half a continent away littered with resistance fighters and almost no roads and constant lack of fuel. Russia and Ukraine have to support only some couple 100.000s soldiers on their own border regions. It doesn't compare at all.
DW lying about Russian forces being pushed back from Kiev and other major locations in the north east and centre. It was purely Russian decision to remove its army from those places just because the diplomatic talks looked successful in Istanbul and it was a gesture of good act aimed to support further talks.
