Geez.... I'm 58 and I day trade crypto. I've had a lot of success and took my account from four digits to six. I come from a very dysfunctional family and found out through a random internet search my abusive 'dad' had died and I crashed psychologically. I was in a crappy marriage, once my daughter finished her MA. I left my wife and crashed even more. 2024 has been The Worst Year for me and im trying to get back to trading successfully but have had some setbacks and now I'm wondering.... am I too old? Thank you guys for sharing . Now I know I'm not too old.

Don’t give up brother. It is in you to succeed! “When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” -Jacob Riis (edit: added the quote)

I started surrounding myself with older people to learn from them.
That solved this problem. I never think anymore I'm too old.
You can always learn or teach at any age.

Ty for your encouragement...I'm a guitar player... And I'm excellent. I started when I was 14. When I was 19 a friend...a real good buddy... Was with me one day when I was playing and he said..."you're too old to be doing this!" I was very insecure to begin with and I still am at 51... Well I continued to play and still do but his comment never left me alone... It shackled me psychologically and I never pursued doing anything with my guitar other than sitting in my room practicing. I'm still that way and it has created an emptiness in me. But I'm determined to overcome this negativity and actually do something about it. Anyone reading this... Dont allow the negativity of others to fishhook itself in your mind!!! I too am attracted to math...I made it through calculus and accounting in college. If you're breathing... It's never to late. Albert Schweitzer didn't become a doctor until after 50!!

Appreciated this, the timing couldn't be better. I'm 44 and in the middle of a Bachelor of Engineering degree (which in Australia is a four year undergraduate degree). The last time I studied maths was at high school, so it'd been 25 years! I've made it through all the programmed pure maths courses now, so now it's clear sailing ahead, applying all that learned maths in engineering courses. Signal analysis, oh that's why you'd want to shift the index of a summation, and convolutions are just integration by parts; electrical circuits, they're second order ODEs with Laplace transfer functions showing you frequency response, and so on... it's wonderful seeing this stuff come to life! I'm hungry for more, but let's just get this BE done first...

The biggest issue going back to college at 50 due to location change and having to re-evaluate skills I now needed, was holding onto the assumption that I was terrible at Maths, because I had failed it many years ago and it became an unproven fallacy in my mind. Only made it up to grade 10 Math, so Arts degree courses only to just make it out of high school. This time, managed to graduate with a Software Engineering Advanced Diploma. Challenging yes, but dedication and hard work paid off. While ageism is terrible in tech. and really bad assumptions are rampant, which has been the worst hurdle to overcome, remote work options becoming a reality due to the pandemic made this all moot and was able to work doing what I love originally. I do not regret the experience as it proved that what I thought was impossible is indeed possible, and my life is better for the experience: an experience I am passing onto my children when they hit the same fail mindset to help them overcome it with hard-won experience under my belt now.

I was about to send you an email yesterday precisely about this topic. I'm from Argentina, I'm 19 and after a whole life thinking about studying cinema, I discovered that I love math and decided to study finance in college. I've been studying a lot of math lately but lots of times I feel that I'm already too old to be great at it. I read about mathematicians and famous scientists who were really good at math just when they were little kids and it makes me feel like I started too late and have no chance. But your videos always motivate me to keep studying. That's priceless. Thanks!

I felt like I'd never be able to play like them because I started too late. But then I started thinking differently. I started looking into the future rather than into the past. If I start learning at 17, how good will i be in 10 years when im 27? I'll be as good as that 20 year old who started playing at 10 (who is extremely good), if not better! Now im much more motivated :D

Another problem is comparison, both to peers and an ideal version. I didn't envision my transition into adulthood like the way I live right now at _all_ , so that can be harrowing at times. But you're right I suppose. I do have my whole life ahead of me. All of us do, up until our last second.

    I was in 5th grade
    Thinking about playing basketball
but then i saw the others
    who has been playing
since they were able to walk
And i thought.. its too late.
    I was in 9th grade.
    thinking about playing football
But then i saw the others
    who had been playing
    since the 5th grade
and i thought.. Its too late.
I was in the 12th grade
    wanting to play football
    as I watched the others
    who had been playing
    since the 9th grade
    play the last game
    of the season.
    then I realized that now
    Its too late.
I plead to every one of my little cousins, the kids I meet at the park, the young teens I meet at the basketball court to not pass up the opportunity. Dont be afraid to embarrass yourself in the pursuit of making yourself better. In just a few years you will be just as good as your peers if you put in the effort. Especially if they are as fortunate enough as I was to have a public school with free sports programs.

Old age - whatever that means, and that changes from people to people - takes a toll on _everyone_ . Yes, at some point you will be too old for something. That doesn't mean one should stop using his/her brain and/or body, though - one must, however, be aware of his/her limitations.

An important distinction should be made between self-study or enrolling in a class, and pursuing a formal degree. Certainly self-study or taking a few courses can be done at any age; however, the opportunity cost of enrolling in a Degree program should be assessed because it is a much larger commitment. Answer the question, "Is a Degree worth the time and money, versus other things I could do?"

I would like to share my experience.
I didn't do well in my high school in mathematics because I started hating the subject. There is an exam called jee in my country for high schoolers which decides the engineering college you'll get based on how you perform in it. Everything was going fine till class 10th. I was loving science and especially mathematics. But the high school syllabus literally introduced fear of science subjects in me. Chemistry, which is one of the three subjects jee aspirants chose in the high school was boring but a nightmare for me. I started losing motivation in studies.
I will admit I was a bit of arrogant bloke who used to believe I don't need any teacher to teach me and I can study everything by myself. That proved wrong when I tried and tried but couldn't solve that one problem in physics because it involved some high level calculus which I had no experience with. I then resorted to studying calculus first. But the formal definition in the government publication book was too complexly written that I was banging my skull when I couldn't understand it. But the arrogance inside me kept telling I could do it without any help of the teacher. There was a point in my academic life when I was introduced to the internet. I started using it as much as possible not for studies but for social media and constant dopamine taste. Then came 2020. All schools and coaching institutions were closed and the only option was online study. As you would have guessed, I bungled that opportunity too. Then there came a time when I found myself at the end of high school period but without any knowledge of physics chemistry and somewhat little of mathematics (it was the love of my life). I passed high school with some of the least passing marks and then came out as a depressed and phone addicted version of me who was frightened of physics and chemistry.
Before I started pursuing graduation I started studying the high school mathematics again and without pressure and knowing how to avoid the distraction I studied hard not for some competition but as a hobby. I found that the things l found difficult two years ago were only written complexly. In fact they were easy and fun to understand. The experience I had for past two years had humbled my attitude. I started approaching teachers and seniors for help and it worked amazingly. I believe math is understood better if you are discussing it with your peers and trying to make each other understand things. So this was my story. I guess I wrote too much. But if you have read it this far here is a lesson to study mathematics better.
    1. Don't be afraid to ask for help
    2. Buy a good book for the chapter(s) you are feeling difficult to understand.
    3. There is never too late to enjoy mathematics.

I got 92 on the final exam for physics. 32, feels late. I really drag my feet even now, for me a lot of motivation comes from impossible goals that you know are unlikely. But possible. There are some places I wouldn't be accepted with perfect grades and the right background because of age. But if the bar is about hitting a certain level at 18 I think its more about kids that got pushed and prepped by their parents.

    You're never too old.
But there's one thing I realized.
The older you get, the harder it's going to be for you. Even with the same goals you want to accomplish.
    Let me explain:
Let's compare one person to itself, but with different ages. Person X with age 20, the same person, but with age 30 (let's call the person "Person Y") and Person "Z" ,same person again, but with age 40.
Let's create a scenario. Let's assume, each person is doing their A-levels exam and consider the outcome as the opportunities and benefits, which may come with a successful positive result a.k.a. finishing the exam and therefore NOT failing it.
Person X (20) has the best chances of starting in a (good paying) company. He/She has the opportunity to climb the corporate latter and one day may be in an office, having a job at a high paying level maybe just 1 or 2 ranks below the leading positions.
Person Y (30) has chances to get into the office, but as this person is 10 years older, the time might not be enough to climb the corporate latter to that degree as the 20-year old person because after some time, let's say if person Y is 35 or older, a different person much younger appears (20-30) and often is favoured to get the leading position instead.
Person Z (40) also has the chance to get into the office. But for this person, the CEO assumes that if Person Z gains enough knowledge about the company, he/she is probably going to be 50 years old and therefore just 15 years away from retirement so the company or the "decision makers" in that company don't want Person Z to get into such a position anymore, because they think the time period will be too short as retirement is going to be just a few years away after Person Z would be starting his/her leading position.
This is the great problem we have in today's world.
I am a little over 30 (as of writing this) and I do nearly everything for my company.
It's a pity I have a job where I don't need to think much, but I love coming up with solutions and thinking ahead of time about the things I can do in my workplace.
What's next, should I prepare this first, let's add this material (I have enough space) and when it's going to be needed, the material preperation has already been processed and therefore the material is already ready. Saving over 1h of waiting time to other workers on different machines as well as keeping the schedule free to add more items for the next rounds.
Do this multiple times a day and with this method, I am able to be multiple hours ahead of time. I max out the possible space. I prepare the next working items for the next shift and so on. But the other shift doesn't.
The problem with this method is, that other workers (who do the same as I do, or in other words work on the same machines I do, just the different shift), slack off completely, doing just a third of the work they're supposed to do and also "choosing" the easy work, leaving the difficult or labor intensive work for me to do (From the physical material that needs to be processed).
I really hate them for slacking off completely, wondering why they haven't been fired yet.
But somehow they always take their time and never get any consequences for doing that.
The curious thing is, they complain about me when I show them the books I ordered, the books I read. I have a TBR list and I'm always excited when a new ordered book arrives. Books I already have in my shelf like for example: TAOCP, Concrete Mathematics
    {
I've started Concrete Math today on 26th of August 2024. I already read the first chapter and I'm going to do the exercises after finishing what I'm writing here). So excited to learn about Sums and Series (never did that in my Math A-levels course I took several years ago). The choice of books was either this book (Concrete Mathematics - Graham, Knuth, Patashnik) or (Knuth's "The Art of Computer Programming").
As someone pointed out I should first start with "Concrete Mathematics", I did that.
Sure I cheated a little bit, looking a few pages into the 1st Volume of TAOCP and did the same with the "Concrete Math" book to get an idea of the contents, couldn't hold myself back from my own curiousity.
Resulting in the Concrete Math book being chosen because it resonated more with my current state of understanding in math.
Starting TAOCP without understanding Sums and Series well enough would not be a good start, wouldn't it?
    }
, Baby Rudin, Stewart's Calculus 8th Ed, The Feynmann Lectures on Physics, and so on...
I want to expand my horizon, I want to understand math better, I'm always excited when it comes to solving math problems, I like teaching my young relatives about the math they have in school, I want to get them excited about math but they never are, regardless of how hard I try to make it exciting. They just want the answers or do the minimum required tasks as homework they got from their teacher. (For example: if they need to do Nr. 1,2,3,4 but Nr. 5 is optional, they don't want to do Nr. 5).
So there I am, starting with the book "ConCrete Mathematics" today.
The first (warmup) question to solve is:
    (p17)
All horses are the same color. We can proove this by induction on the number of horses in a given set. Here's how: "If ther's just one horse, then it's the same color as itself, so the basis is trivial. For the induction step, assume that there are n horses from 1 to n. By the induction hypothesis, horses 1 through (n-1) are the same color. But the middle horses 2 through (n-1) can't change color when they're in different groups, these are horses, not chameleons. So horses 1 and n must be the same color. That which was to be demonstrated (QED).
    What's wrong with this reasoning?
I don't know, so let's dig into it.
    1.) Look at small cases
2.)Find and proove for a mathematical expression of number of choice (n) cases
3.)Find and proove a closed form for this mathematical expression
    1) If there exists only 1 horse, then there is just 1 color in existence or possible. Assuming all horses have just 1 and only 1 color (not 2 colors, not mixed colors), one horse has to have 1 color. If there is no other horse left, it concludes that there is just 1 option or 1 color to choose from for the first horse.
2)If there exist 2 horses, they have to be the same color otherwise there is a problem
    3) We can run this number up to n horses and it would still hold true if and only if all n horses are the same color.
4)I assume the problem will occur if we remove a horse from the group. If a horse was excluded, we don't know it's color. We don't know it's number. Therefore we don't know if it's really the first or the second or the nth horse. Are there even non-excluded horses? What does this mean?
Also, does the sentence But the middle horses 2 through (n-1) imply that there should be at least 3 horses? What if there aren't?
So I think there is a big flaw in this horse color paradox. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the answer I came up with.
The second exercise is precisely the description of the "Tower of Hanoi" which is the first mathematical puzzle on the first page of chapter 1. As I already have put a lot of time into researching about the Hanoi Tower some years ago out of my own curiousity, I already know that this is going to be a very big number of moves, precisely (2^n) -1 moves for n disks with 3 pegs.
It has a similarity of the Sissa Chess number with (2^64)-1 where 64 is the number of fields the chessboard has. The difference being that if we want to change the original chessboard into a different black-and -white-board with the size n for number of fields, we can only achieve this by using the square numbers because a board can only have a square number of fields for it to appear in a regular "chessboard-like" shape.
The tower of hanoi however could be modified into a different number "n" of number of pegs. For example: Let N be the number of pegs.
N could be any natural positive whole number. Could be 3, 4, 5, or even 20.
This modification of N bigger than 3 would decrease the number of steps required to move x ammount of discs from one peg to another significantly. Resulting in a completely different answer to the original problem.
Anyway, as of drifting off from the original purpose I started to write this, I'm getting tired and I want to continue reading this book, just having read the 1st chapter and done the first 2 exercises being 4 pages short until reaching chapter 2 in this book "Concrete Math".
    What was the original question?
    Stop thinking you're too old.
Short answer: Just start doing what you always wished to do in life and don't persuade yourself into thinking you're too old.
You're never too old to start doing what you've always wanted on your first day of realizing this.
You might fail by overestimating yourself in parts which physically are just not possible for you (for example setting a goal to win the olympics if being 70 and never done sports your whole life), but if the goal you have is reasonable and achievable, you are going to make it.
You are the limiting factor of yourself if you always think you can't do it.
Move those thoughts out of the way and start working on your goals.
    Believe in yourself!

When I study mathematics, Im usually studying things ahead, beyond what my current school curriculum covers, but lately Ive been a little unsure about this.
Its like, I can look at some problem that requires knowledge beyond what we're learning now, understand it and solve it, but if I were to look at some difficult olympiad problem, I have no clue how to tackle it.
Im not sure which one I should prioritise if Im trying to be a mathematician. At my age is it better for me to study more of the theory, or should I focus on developing those problem solving skills and learn to use theory in a very creative way? They just feel like very different approaches to studying math, is there a priority here, or is it really ok with anything? Which one will help me more through university and ultimately lead to being able to research mathematics better?

I just wish i didn't have to work so hard and so many hours (10-12) daily (kitchen work) just to pay rent and have something to eat, im 28 and theres a good college near my house that is basically free that i see everyday on my way to work, is really depressing. i want to start studying math and i already half way through a small book on linear algebra (need it + diferential an integral calculus for the entrance exam) but its been so hard to progress when there are weeks that im just so depleted after work that the only thing i do is sleep and work and sometimes eat more than once a day. Even if i manage to enter college i dont tink i can work and study at the same time. theres all this stories of people that work and study and succeed in my country but i think im just not that kind of person im just never gonna be that good, i have tried but i just cant, i feel like i just dont have the energy anymore to do both, leaving alone is already difficult as is. I dont know what to say maybe im just putting excuses maybe im just to tired of life in general
On a brighther note i just finished some optimization problems in dif calc and i think math is finally clicking for me so ill keep at it and see what happens with the entrance exams come april
Sorry for the emotional meltdown im new to your chanel but you have a new subscriber, ill try to find one of the books you recommend in the college library and see how it goes. thx for the motivation you said somethings i really needed to hear.
