I just played this formation in a school football match today, and it was 0-1 to the opponent team at halt-time, then we changed from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3. At the end we won 4-1! Thanks to this video that taught me a lot!

I am a former Division 1 and Division 2 coach, as well as high school/club coach for more than two decades. I can tell you that this system of play is outstanding (as long as you have the players to run it and commit to it). I have also had three academy teams go undefeated by running a similar system. With younger teams, we played 8v8 and while trying to run a somewhat similar 2-3-2 (much like the 11 aside UNC 3-4-3) I found that the fitness required for my outside mids to not only make attacking runs, but also dropping into the gaps out wide defensively were too hard on my young players. So, what I did to make it easier on them was to play a 3-1-3 formation. This allowed for those players to already be in position without the worry of dropping 30-40 years as well as having the wingers in position to attack the defenders creating 1v1s with spreading the defense out. We still played ball side defensively and had two defensive diagonals with my 3 up front and 3 defenders.

My teams have played 4-4-2 for years (with a lot of success, I might add) because it fit the players we had. Next year will be different and I'm going with a 3-4-3. Well, more like a 3-4-1-2, with a CAM sitting in behind the two strikers and the 4 midfielders playing flat across the middle. I've watched a number of videos on this here on UA-cam featuring Gasperini's Atalanta side. I'd love to see World Class Coaching post a video on this. By the way, I've watched a ton of your videos and learned so much. Many thanks for what you do.

I've been coching U12's and U14's for past 2 years now, and my default go to is either a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2. My issue in the first season was I had two really talented CB's. The extra defender in the first few games coaching made it hard, because we simply could not win the middle ground. So the moment I moved to a 3 man defence, everything worked out better in the end. I've been coaching kids with a 3 defence that I'm more familiar and comfortable with it.
I tend to have 2 CAM's and the CF in a supporting role, So that way the CAM's can exploit the channels. The wide midfielders were able to give the width, Had one midfielder holding, and had to cover the LM, because of his personal characteristics (Dribbling to the byline). and paired him with a feisty, quick CM, who was a good dribbler and would cut through the middle of the park like a knife through butter.

When I coach in the future I want to play with this formation, but with a false 9, just like the Chilean National team did for a bit. Vidal would be the false 9 and would always pressure the center backs and track back to defend, while Vargas and Sanchez would be wingers/strikers. This formation is so versatile, you can change easily to a 4-3-3 or 5-2-3 depending on how the opposition is playing.

I play 3-4-3 formation. My back 3 play man to man instead of a zone. my midfielders have high endurance and my defenders are athletic with great skills as well... Your holding mid can be your 4th when needed or your 2 inside midfielders can help..... you had good points here on the video.

As a coach, I would shred your back line if you played man.

I used this with my AFC Wimbledon Girls U 16 3 4 3 ( diamond) My 4 in midfield are very good technically and my front 3 are quick. I like the front 3 together

wingers should come back because eg if the number 4 drops back to support the defense there is a huge gap which means the number ten also has to move backwards if you want that space covered which automatically means your winger should come back to the midfield and start a press

I see a lot of people keep on talking about Episoketren System. But I'm uncertain if it is good. Have you ever tried this popular training course?

In your flat version I noticed you kept the #10 as a midfielder rather than in one of the top 3 positions, is that because you would want to use them as part of the build up from the back or why do that? I would have the #10 in the center if we are playing with the diamond in the middle so that the #10 could focus more on creating going forward. I enjoyed the video, thanks. Please let me know what you think.

Personally I think the forwards should play spread out. This spreads the opposition defence for runs from midfield particularly with the 9 pulling defenders into midfield. Overloads the middle of the pitch too as you stated

Good point. I think against a back three, that would work. Against a back four, keep moving to find space in-between the defenders to constantly keep them unbalanced.

You shouldn’t coach youth teams like that. Sure, you might have a advantage in this age group but your teaching bad habits to your defenders. The wingbacks need to know they have to tuck-in and shuffle across and the defensive midfielder needs to know how to cover the centerbacks, these are principles of defending that will help develop those players (and are much better thought with a back 4, but that’s just my preference). Youth coaching is not about winning, is about forming players.
You need to humble yourself to teach those players instead of satisfying your need to be Johan Cruyff.
