Eighteen months ago, The Cultural Tutor was working at McDonald’s. Now, he has one of the world's fastest-growing accounts on Twitter. He publishes every day, has ~100,000 email subscribers, and 1.5 million Twitter followers. Here are some of the Cultural Tutor’s go-to writing maxims: 1. Don't read anything published within the past 50 years. 2. You don’t lack ideas, you lack deadlines. 3. By forcing yourself to be creative, you generate better ideas. 4. Be disciplined about your output but loose with your process. 5. You don’t need to be an expert before you start writing; you just need to be curious. You’ll become an expert by writing about what you learn. 6. The best time to write about an idea is when it first strikes you. 7. Your voice is what you write about, not just how you write about it. 8. You can’t just sit in an empty room and write. You have to engage with the world and notice things. Then write about that. 9. Your best writing comes not when you decide to write but when you are compelled to write. 10. You have enough time to write. If you’re not writing, then it’s not your priority. 11. Keep a notebook because great ideas disappear as quickly as they appear. 12. If you can get the introduction right, the rest of what you’re working on will write itself. 13. Sometimes there are truths that emerge in our writing that feel like they come from outside of us, and we feel like conduits and vessels for the ideas. An idea can take you over, where you’re just in service of it. A friend once told The Cultural Tutor: "With all those books you've read, you must have something to share with people.” Now, he wakes up every day with a single goal: publish one high-quality Twitter thread.
Met him in Sofia, Bulgaria, amazing guy to talk to, with great perspectives about the world we live in, he is always trying to learn from different people with different background and cultures. Glad that such people still exist in our world :) Greetings!
This man is so unbelievably based. Wakes up at 4:37 PM, smokes a pack of cigarettes, his only goal is to write 1 thread everyday, and he gets to 1.5 million followers. A true rebel.
Well, that has shattered my illusions! I had an old Etonion in my mind - probably a septuagenarian -as I read the Areopagus every week. Fascinating interview!
I don't remember how long it's been since I didn't enjoy an interview as much as it is. David: Thank you very much for interviewing this very interesting man. I am passionate about following the call of the true vocation, the calling, and today this interview has been a delight in that situation. One of the best spent minutes of my time.
That was an absolutely fantastic conversation. Thank you for letting us listen in. So many pure and basic truths, commitments, ideas. I truly enjoyed it.
"If you write, then you are a writer" It's amazing how many have talked themselves out of believing this based on an idea of what a writer must look like
Recently got banned from twitter, literally the first account I followed when I created a new one was the cultural tutor Realy appreciate your content and now your story !
Writing by hand. It's the spiritual connection for me. Due to my travels.. I can no longer lug around notebooks... So into writing on the computer I go. This video was ordered for me to see. Thank you!!
Appreciate this kind of conversation. Love the background and how it is setup smoothly. The guy is defly an artist, have clear goal each day to just write againts all rules laid out by productivity gurus!
I've followed him on Twitter for some months now. His stories are incredible. His writing hooks you from the beginning, and when you reach the end, you are looking for more.
I was one of the accounts he messages when he had a few hundred followers. I remember the conversation. I had tens of thousands at the time, but was too busy to keep at it. Then I paused the accounts I had, and when I came back a few months later, Twitter, which had changed to X over that period, up and deleted them all, and wouldn't bring them back, with no explanation, but of course they keep sending me marketing messages.
I have written daily.. Literally.. because I have to. I must. And I get it. I get this gentleman. I also don't.. "enjoy it" it's kinda like enjoying air!!!
This guy looks exactly like I expected him to. Sometimes I wonder if I am too judgemental and wrapped up in my pre-conceived notions. But I also seem to be correct all the time.
NIetszche wrote his philosophy by hand, so called 'in einem fluss', but if you see manuscripts of Nietzsche it is one big 'delete key' 'backspace key' operation. I think every great writer has only one moment of grace: writing 'in einem fluss', after that it is hard labour
As a lifelong, compulsive writer who is hating every moment of her day job, I cannot express the balm and perspective this interview has brought me. 🥹🙏🏼
Why is having a 1 million followers on Twitter a big deal?? There are people who do Crazy videos in Twitter with 2 million followers. And it says nothing about his writing. It shows his eye for culture and art. Take out the art and image from his posts and he will struggle on Twitter.

What brand of cigarettes does he smoke?

if you think that is rebellious, you are indeed quite dumb
Cigarettes are a weakness.
@@kingkefa7130imagine calling this guy a "true rebel", very sad indeed
@@jodawgsupeh, he seems like an ok kid, a bit pretentious, but I appreciate most of what he said.
He hasn't read much Joyce so he ain't based. Also he needs 25k a year to live. That ain't a real bohemian
I'd love to listen to another 10 episodes with you and TCT! Please have him on your podcast again.

A real artist. You can read any book, but not every book. The quality of reading.
Incredible story. Most enjoyable interview I've watched in a long time. Thank you!

I love the clumsy cut at 1:15:46, right before he says "...and this is the art of editing..."
"The problem is, when you give me books, I immediately get lost in them." Lovely.
Great conversation. Thank you
Enthralling conversation! Just Subscribed!❤
This is amazing, David! I was wondering when you would produce more videos on UA-cam and this feels next level.
Love to hear that, thanks for the kind words
An absolute living example "Keep one idea and make it as your life". Even a twitter thread can be your lifeline. ❤
Incredible interview!
A long overdue calling out of the Human Optimisation & Productivity Industrial Complex
This is gold

one of the best twitter accounts
Roar. Something from the core. Like Howl by Bukowski.
where did you film this?
This guy sounds like every single male philosophy grad student I've ever met
2 likes after 7 months maybe you should type less things on the internet😂

I can only write on an underwood champion after waking up at 430am and going on a 12 mile sprint.
Comedy gold!
Feedback: Skip the music intro. it's needlessly disruptive.

enjoying this. is he on acid?
How much money has this man generated? Answer: $0.
With 100000 email subs you can earn easy 6 figures
lol he's most likely making thousands from twitter's monetization scheme
