Israeli scholar Maya Wind’s new book, Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom, documents how Israeli universities directly constrain Palestinian rights by supporting and even developing the policies of occupation and apartheid used by the Israeli state. “In the West, Israeli universities are considered bastions of pluralism and democracy. But in fact … they are a central pillar of Israel’s regime of oppression against Palestinians,” says Wind. She also discusses Israel’s “scholasticide" in Gaza, the "intentional destruction of Palestinian education,” and the movement of conscientious objectors to Israel’s mandatory conscription, in which she took part when she refused to enlist in the army at age 18 and served 40 days in a military prison.

Prof Ilan Pappé, author of 'The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine' (2006) faced similar headwinds at the University of Haifa (from about 2000?) and from a wider public, including the posting of human excrements to his home. He eventually left for a UK University (Exeter) in 2008.

I admire this woman not for her insights but for her actions, in particular refusing to join the Israeli army. Jails are not harsh for Jewish people in Israel, nothing like the hell holes in America. It doesn’t suprise me that there is no academic freedom at Israeli Universities. Israel is not a democratic country, but an apartheid regime. To suppose that under these conditions value-free, unbiased and objective research could be carried out is illusionary.
Sure. But somebody has to talk or write about it or else they can keep on pretending that they are a democracy and everybody was free in it. The problem is that they brainwash people into believing things that are not true and thus make sure they are safe to carry on with all that horrible things.
Yet until now this professor did have academic freedom! 30 years? And Palestinians, and Israeli Arabs do attend university. Yet obviously the move to the right has led to more oppression and suppression. Democracy Now also consistently fails to elucidate or probe in interviews about how Palestinian leadership,Islamic Jihad, the genocidal intent of Hamas and Hezbollah played into the increasing repression by the Israeli government and fears in the populace that allows this to grow. That needs to be taken into account, to understand the emotions driving Israeli's, many refugees from both Europe and other Arab and Islamic nations, further away from compassion, and often hardens them from seeking equality and justice for Palestinians.
