The box turned out real well, and is sure to last for many years. I used to snare a lot of rabbits, but the population around here has crashed because of a virus. Must be ten years now and still no sign of recovery. O thank you very much for the shout out. Really appreciate it 👍
Good Job on the box Charlie, I had bought a cheap hockey bag with a rigid base to carry chainsaw, snowshoes etc.....works fine but found fumbling with zippers with mitts frustrating....ie stopped zipping the bag...snow in bag....will be building box when i bring the Tundra back home in the spring
I had the ski-doo cargo bag, beautiful bag and I liked it a lot, but every time you added or removed cargo you had to adjust the strap and the zippers were always getting covered with snow and ice. I was just getting tried of the bag and needed something more logical...
I used an action packer last winter, ready for something else this year, tired of messing with straps/bungee cords in -20. Finishing the box up this morning weekend.
Charlie good job on the box buddy.. Buy a tube of painters acrylic dap.. Chalk over all the silicone with the acrylic and the paint will stick to the acrylic.. hope this helps you bud take care. Waiting for them trouting videos..👍 Pat.
Thanks Pat. I tried reading the directions on the silicone but even with my glasses on the printing was to small fro me to read. Someone told me you can get caulking that paint sticks to, so without being able to read what I was buying I was just playing a guessing game and guessed wrong LOL... Thanks for the advice.
Well I hope your box build turns out good. I just loves my box, I have four 1" insulated clamps that I'm going to use to mount the box to the ski-doo and get rid of the strap I'm currently using. But we are in a cold snap the last few days so I'm going to wait until the weather warms up a little before going at that. I will have to drill 4 holes in the box, which I'm not a fan of but in the end I think it will be a much cleaner look and result in a much more secure mount.
Funny you should say that, because after I looked at the video and seen it on the ski-doo I was thinking the very same thing. Maybe even a Semi-gloss white. This box might have a new look next year.
Funny you should say that, no haha.... It's black because that is what colour everyone around here paints it. But I'm thinking white might've looked better...
Oh I'm so happy I got this box built. Sure comes in handy. I bought the cargo bag for it when I first got the sled, used it for the first 2 1/2 years and it worked well, still does. However I was getting tired of always having to adjust the straps every time you needed to add or remove cargo. With the box there's no more issues. Just open the lid or hatch and place it in or take it out. Now I can see some future mod's coming to the box like maybe depending on the load I could have removable dividers in it to say, separate ice fishing rods and camera gear to protect it from the rest of the cargo. But that will be a future project once I've had time to think it all out and see what works for me.
Paul I had mentioned that in the video, about wanting to paint it a lighter colour on the inside and it was for that very reason. Tell your wife I think she's right but I was just too lazy to drive back to town to get different paint. One can, one job, getter done LOL....
@@NLGhostWolf I'm jealous Charlie I'm not back home enjoying Newfoundland like you..lol....just joking..but I'm back there in 5 years hopefully. .....I like seeing homemade stuff being made...Love your videos....cheers..
I built one out of plywood to but I lined the inside with some thick but flexible rubber that came in a shipping container from Fort Mac. You must have a buddy with some of that kicking around
Few nice pointers there Charlie. Mine still not done; aluminum is a bit tougher to do so I'm in no rush, skidoo only 12 years old yet not broke in so to speak ahaha.........cheers bud
Aluminum, gees b'ye you're going flat-out. You're a hard case old trout. My clamps are suppose to be in tomorrow however I don't think the ferry ran all weekend with the winds and they are not dying down at all. I will have to finish cleaning up the driveway and then head out to see if I can break the trail to check my snares.... Going to have to deal with some massive drifts up on the top of the Gronny.... Ran into pure whiteout conditions up there on Saturday morning. She's a rugged trail and that drifts over completely in the big wind storms we get here. Next fall if the weather and time permits I'll be cutting a new trail, which will actually be the old trail so we no longer have to deal with the open exposed areas. Nothing worst than have to deal with all the 3 to 8 foot drifts storm after storm. It's time to get the trail back into the tree-line where it's much easier to maintain and safer to use... PS... Looking forward to seeing that box you are building...
Looks great. Personally I probably would have gotten some small stainless eye bolts/rings and put a few on each side for gear you might wanna strap on with bungee cord and you could use t-nuts with a bit of red loctite so you could trim inside flush instead of banging your knuckles on them.
A few wouldn’t hurt then you’d have a spot to tie off stuff and you could get jack to weld a washer to the end of the eye so they wouldn’t draw in too much.
yes good idea plus it's always good to keep Jack busy because he gets into mischief when he has nothing to do... Plus he believes he must do one good deed a day, so by giving him something to do, I'd actually be doing a good deed.... LOL
The Expedition can handle the deep snow too. No worries there Bob. I chose the Tundra because of it's narrow stance and nimbleness. Because of it's width I can cut trails that the wider snowmobiles can't go down. So when I put out snares or traps others can't get to them. Now I haven't bothered trapping in the last couple of years due to the poor fur prices but when I start up again, I don't want people stealing my gear. So I plan on cutting trails just wide enough for the tundra to squeeze through. If they want my gear they will have to walk or buy a tundra or bravo themselves.
Box looks great, how much did it end up weighing empty. ⚖️ If you painted it white and set it in the snow you might lose it, haha. 😉 Was that 5/8 or 3/4 inch plywood you used? 🔨 Why did you prefer to taper the lid down wards instead of leaving the back of the box square and the lid level? 📐
It was 1/2" plywood but we glued and nailed it with plenty of nails using 1 1/2" brad nails... I'm not sure the weight, but if I can remember to weight it when I take it off to glue the rubber matting on underneath the bottom of the 2x2's to protect the ski-doo's tunnel. I will give you an update in the next video. As for the tapered back, it was just for looks. There is a max weight for that end of the tunnel areas and the design I have can easily exceed that weight when fully loaded with gear. So I didn't really need the extra area I would have gotten with the square back.
Yes, I hear you on that one. It's like riding on the back of a bus, things seemed to get bounced around a lot back there. I still have to figure out where everything is going. So no doubt mod's are coming but not until I get it all figured out. I'm not sure why it took me so long to build this box...
Currently with a cargo strap but I have 4 clamps I plan on installing it with in the future... Just need to find the time to install them... A nice fall project...
Awesome job. I'll be building one for my Tundra before winter. What clamps do you plan to use to secure to the tunnel? Also thanks for your videos on the Tundra LT 600 ace, helped me make a decision last year when I bought mine.
For now it's a black strap, but as soon as my clamps come in it will be with four rubber padded clamps. I will show the final attachment to the sled when the clamps arrive.
Hello Charlie, do you know the Kelly kettle or Ghillie kettle ? They are great for boiling water/melting snow and cooking too. And best of all they work in very cold temperature.... but they are kind of messy a little bite Cheers
Yes I seen videos on the kelly kettles, that seem to work great, very fast and with very little wood. All wonderful reasons to get one. Only reason I haven't is because I already have a kettle and a piper and the kelly's are in my opinion over priced... I don't mind spending money but I must feel like I'm getting a deal, I don't think I would feel that way with a kelly... Plus when boiling a kelly over an open fire there's something special about the hole experience. But all that being said, I know there are times when the speed of the kelly kettle would come in handy for that quick fix when you gets a chill and would like to have a quick cup of tea to warm the body... Maybe I need to watch for them to go on sale....

No Worries and thanks for subscribing to my channel. I live on the West Coast in a little settlement aka village just minutes away from Stephenville. Oh, thanks a great question and it truly depends on when you plan on visiting. If you can time your visit when the capelin are in the bay then you would have to head out to the Boot of the Cape and do some whale watching. We have seen over a 100 whales in two days there. Just beautiful to watch them feed on the capelin right below you. I have a few whale watching videos that I have here on the channel that filmed in the last 2 years. Humpbacks right on the shoreline. Not sure how the road is going to Burgeo, but that's a real gem of a place with beautiful white sand beaches and every wild berry that grows here on the island as well as the wild beach peas. Depending on when you travel that route you could see herds of caribou as well as the moose and bears. The drive through Gros Morne is a must. But the thing is, you have to get away from the TCH. If you stay on the main highway across the island you'll see very limited scenic views... If you pass this way when I'm in town, I could meet up with you and show you around this part of Newfoundland. Check out my videos of Burgeo and looking for moose and caribou on the Burgeo hwy.
