A chat with Pato O'Ward. Is he F1's next rookie?

- Mexican driver Patricio (Pato) O'Ward drives for Arrow McLaren SP in the US Indycar series but is a serious candidate for a seat in F1. I've been impressed with the 23-year old since I met him at the 2021 Mexican GP. I chatted with him over a long lunch in Indianapolis mid-May and if he manages to snare an F1 seat, there's no doubt he will bring real flare and excitement to the sport. I really like Pato. He is very open and detailed in what he says. It reminds me a bit of the old interviews with Senna. Hope he makes it to F1.
Reminds me of young JPM. Dude is excellent on cold tires and can be quite animated like JPM was in F1 early on with Williams.
Pato's personality will a great addition to the F1 paddock. I'm rooting for him.

I like the contrast between Pato and Checo, Pato is a pretty modern, outgoing, funny and charismatic, while Checo is shy, more measured, family-oriented and tradional in every aspect, both are great drivers and great lads in their own way. I hope Pato makes it to F1 if he wishes to do so, he's got the talent and work ethic to at least get a chance.

Pato is exactly what you saw in this video, at the Indy in St. Petersburg this year, he was running to get into the grid when I shout his name, he saw me, came back, and took a picture with me and my little soon, later on, I was at the grid taking a picture, he spotted me again and waived to me saying hey mate.
Incredible, human, great driver, and hungry for the F1 seat, I'm very hopeful he gets Riccardo's seat soon.

Now I see why Zac Brown likes him. Pato has a charismatic charm and a talent. He does look good in that McLaren gear.
He’s the perfect choice to replace Daniel and he and Lando are already good friends…the chemistry would be off the charts.

Amazing driver. Getting Pato to F1 is a no brainer for Zak. He is a CASH COW and great marketing for Mclaren.
A cash cow that can win. Basically win for whoever gets him in every possible way.
As well as a fine mobile chicane.
But they need to find him a replacement in indy
He wont win in F1. He can win in Indycar. Zak is blinded by the North or South American driver dream. Pato has no licence points. He simply doesnt have the experience to get those points. Its a great guy. Great racer in Indy. Let him do F2. Get his points that way and expercience the HUGE difference from Indycar. Then we'll see if he has the qualities needed. Indycar isnt F1, far from it.

Good stuff. Pato's got more personality than his body can hold. IndyCar driver access is refreshing. Younger drivers appreciate the importance of connecting with fans, and they're just more open because of generational and tech changes, and that's good for all of us. He must have some pretty decent parents.

Took my son to his first Indy car race in Detroit last year where Pato won! We both became big Pato fans that day. What a nice young man!
I’ve never watched a long interview with him before. I like him. He radiates lots of positive energy.
I read an article last night about the Indy 500 since I couldn’t watch it and it praised Pato O’Ward a lot. I mean a lot, a lot. So much so it confused me and I thought he won.
Oh that ending was INSANE he nearly did win. It was like the AbuDhabi 2021 last lap shootout only at Indy, it had the same vibe.
Darn too bad about Pato not winning the 500, it was really close!
But hey he has proven time and time again that he's a top caliber INDY driver. Good luck to him!
I really really don't want him to go to F1 because he is an essential part of the growth of indycar right now. But if he does go I will be very happy for him and of course will continue to support him. Regardless where he goes he is a superstar that is about to explode.
He has such a dynamic and charismatic personality AND he’s a hell of a driver. He would be a fantastic addition to F1, but until then I’m sure Indy is glad to have him

Pato is a very exciting driver. I was rooting for him at Indy. He could be a possible replacement for Danny Ric if he is dropped by McLaren.
Id rather see Pato in the 2nd seat at McLaren than any other driver including Gasly but at the end of the day its up to big Zak. Pato resigned to arrow mclaren for another 2 years already.

He’s got the talent and personality to get into f1 with Mclaren. I hope he’s a top choice considering the rumor of Daniel being taken out. The team needs to step it up and not run on one leg.
I met him last year in Austin at COTA, me and my dad saw him inside the blocked off mclaren clubhouse and he heard is calling for him. He came down, made sure to take pictures and sign autographs. Such a genuinely nice guy and so friendly. Hope he can make it to the pinnacle of the sport.
Pato has such a huge charisma. He deserves a real chance in F1. With Piastri’s signature with MCL his chances are now diminished but perhaps with another team like Alpha Tauri plus a good sponsorship package of Monterrey companies. Let’s hope and see him there soon.

Theres a reason us here in america and our friends south of the border as well as others around the world support Pato . F1 would be absolutely stealing pure joy away from the Indycar series . Unbelievable interview , my favorite yet. As fans of mororsport and the “dreamers” that come along with it we may never get a chance in the car but with drivers who are personable and full of personality like Pato we feel that much closer to the dream by hearing the kid who dreamt it once before explain the feeling and the facial expressions of pure excitement. What an incredible interview, I love how open he is when talking and that he wants to give Arrow McLaren the first 500 and the first championship. I started watching indy perhaps being from Spain and the schedules for him, I love how he is. Hope the best for him and he can drive for McLaren F1 sooner than later. Let's gooo Pato!!!!
Checo will have a fellow Mexican on the grid! Pato seems like the kind of guy who will fit in really well and that’s needed since he will coming into F1 from a non-traditional route and will be viewed with a little bit of wariness due to that…he will put everyone at ease quite quickly with his charisma! And he’s already good friends with Lando.

I’m so happy you interviewed someone outside of Formula One! I’ve been watching sports car racing, F1 and Indy cars since the sixties, when my father got me interested in the sport by building a model Ford GT40 for me. I would love to see Pato get a shot in F1. Colton Herta, too, though I fear he might wreck a lot.
Herta might be more careful in a different series, I see Herta getting picked up by Andretti for their debut season…a Herta/Gasly pairing at Andretti is quite fun to think about.
Pato O'ward should be in Formula1. Kym, you should start your own podcast and introduce us to people behind the scenes in Motorsport teams, their life stories, and their Career trajectory. You have the voice for it and you are a great storyteller.

After the young driver's tests in Abu Dhabi I saw an interview with him as well as some videos on the McLaren UA-cam of his amazing presence playing off of Danny and Lando's equally amazing personalities and I was instantly a fan. I can say with total sincerity that he got me, an F1 fanatic to follow Indycar. I'm not Mexican but I was even gutted that he didn't win the 500 and do a Mexican sweep of the sporting events that day.
What's more is there is a lot being said about Colton Herta's ability but I'm favouring Pato over Colton to join F1 just because I'd love to see his presence in the sport.
Top shout for getting him on your channel.
I loved seeing this guy do his F1 test because he was literally "us" who would be freaking out in a good way if we ever got the chance. He's got a good vibe, good energy, and we've already seen him (*ahem) in a McLaren race suit so crossing my fingers.
How he was giddy and jumpy was so hilarious, he had Lando in stitches.

Huge Danny Ric fan but if he is out the door, I would love for Pato to be his replacement. Though Ric’s personality is 1/1, I think Pato would fit in nicely with that McLaren team and their fan base. And of course, most importantly, he’s a top notch driver who could elevate that team very quickly. You can tell he wants it bad. Great interview!
Super License Points, Pato would have to WIN the current Indycar Championship do get Super License to apply for a F1 Seat…

Even if he does win - I’m not sure the timing of IndyCar finish vs F1 - he may not get his license in time to realistically start the next season as I feel like most teams like to have their lineups decided well before the current season ends. Regardless of where he ends up next year I’ll be rooting for the guy

Especially when being backed by McLaren, if they want to give him the time on track to get his points, he is GONNA get the time in the car to get his points.
Superlicense points will not stop a team if they believe in a driver enough…they’ll make it happen, similar to how Red Bull literally created a whole day to give the 17 year old kid Max Verstappen, who didn’t even have a drivers license, a full day in the car and just told him to go around hundreds of times. They’ll make it happen.

Kym I've been following you for ages and I have enjoyed your growth as a channel that shows the race weekend but I am absolutely shocked at how great of an interviewer you are, this is something you should definitely pursue for the future with upcoming f2 and f3 drivers if you get the time
The thing is my accreditation doesn't allow me to shoot video or audio at the track so it has be done away from the track.

Kym, it is a never seen before great description of the sensations in an F1 car, by someone who comes from winning races in the second best formula series of this world.
