Always good to hear another cover form you Phil , we are always young .. well we like to pretend lol , great job and very nice sound from your restored violin , liked and shared , enjoy rest of your week mate :)) ms
Phil - I loved this :-))) You project so much passion and joy in this wonderful performance! I love that you were standing and swaying to the music as you played. From the intro and the flashing of your warm, fantastic smile, I enjoyed every second of this! I love your violin. What a great instrument and from 1880? Wow! Seems you did a lovely job on that restoration, too....great sound! Thanks for these joyful moments....wonderful performance! ~Jackie
Hey Phil, I am so thrilled to hear and watch you playing! I think you read my mind as I just wondered yesterday if you'd post a new video soon. Your violin sounds fantastic! Is this a restored violin you mentioned below? I'd love to see the lion's head up close. I'm not familiar with the song or the band, so I listened to the original before I listened to your version, and I must say that I like your version much better. Your performance is top-notch and your smile is splendid and very contagious! I smiled big time back at you at the beginning when you winked and smiled.
Hi Kumhui, Long time no hear! Yes, that is the restored violin. I'll email you a few photos or a video :-) I'm glad you like my Violin version. I thought of using some of the original video and to mix it with my video. I thought it would have worked great that way. Whilst the original footage is all fictitious, it shows quite clearly...violence towards females and for this reason only, I decided not to pursue that idea :-( Thanks for your great comments and I'm happy you liked it. fond regards, Phil :-)
Phil, I've been wanting to write to you but was too embarrassed to tell you that I failed to make an arrangement of the song. (You know which song I'm talking about.) I will send you a message soon. And yes, I'd love to see pictures of the lion's head. :)
Love the intro. wink wink!!:)) Well done on restoring such a beautiful violin!! Really enjoyed your performance of this song - amazing sound!! Big thumbs up!! Best wishes, Lorraine 👍🏻
philsskills Awww!! Thanks Phil!! I missed you too - your cheeky intro. made me laugh - I would love to see the violin when it is fully restored!! Take care....regards, Lorraine

Es estupendo, tienes un nuevo suscriptor. Saludos.
I recently restored this Violin. It has a unique feature of a Lion's head for a scroll. Made around 1880. Most of it has been completed except for the tuning pegs which are worn. When I get a 'peg shaver', I will complete the restoration.
Thanks for your comments Krisztina. I hope you are keeping well. :-) This is violin I repaired myself. It is not the new violin :-) Have a great week. regards, Phil :-)
What an amazing performance!!!! It's great to see that you're having so much fun with it!! I was wondering why are you holding your bow differently from how we usually hold it? You hold it further away from the frog. I've seen some other people do that too. Why is that? Does it make a difference?
Thanks for your nice comments Marikoli. :-) As for the bow hold...mmm! it's a combination of getting into a bad habit and redistributing the weight for better control with faster bowing strokes. When your right wrist is required to bend more, it is difficult to keep the "little finger" in the correct place ... 'cause it's shorter. Too much wrist movement and the finger doesn't stretch. I won't claim it is the right thing to do but it is more comfortable. Sometimes playing styles should be developed and changed to suit the music you are playing. e.g. If you're fiddling, you will most likely to be better off keeping all the bow hairs touching the strings but we are told to tilt the bow away from our face. This applies more to classical musicians rather than fiddlers :-) You will develop different styles for different musical genres in time but the massive differences are often seen between fiddle playing and violin playing. A Violin is a Fiddle and a Fiddle is a Violin until it reaches the player...then the set-up is different; bridge position, Sound post and type of strings. You will encounter many differences in the ironmongery and the playing styles as time progresses :-)) Hope this helps and does not confuse. regards, Phil
Thanks for explaining, that's very interesting. It would actually help me to get to the tip of my bow, because I have short arms. :-) But I'll just keep using my bow the way I'm used to :-)) I didn't know it's best to keep all bow hairs touching the strings for fiddle playing. Will keep this in mind when I play my next fiddle song! Looking forward to your next cover!!!
Marikoli Barra :-) When you swing your Violin to the left or to the right; this will affect your ability to bow longer or shorter strokes. You may not realise this at first 'cause you rest your cheek bone or chin on the Violin to suit the chin rest. Don't learn to suit the Violin...make the Violin suit you. Imagine what differences there are between a "Centre mounted chin rest" and a "Side mounted chin rest". *It makes a difference.* The main reasons for bowing with ALL hairs, as far as I'm aware, are two... 1 Makes the Violin sound louder (needed when on stage competing with other instruments) 2 Increases chance of better grip when double stopping. Try double stopping with 1/4 of your bow hairs :-))) Fiddlers do a lot of double stopping :-) ~ Phil
Just this week I've been experimenting a lot with how to hold my violin and what feels best and relaxed. Very interesting! And indeed, it makes sense to use all the bow hair for fiddling. I noticed that when I try to play double stops, I automatically use all bow hairs. But even then it's hard to hit the 2 strings LOL
Thanks Caitlin. I finish up this week at the college in Bridgeton so I might get time to upload a bit more regularly and to catch up with outstanding collabs. Hope things are cool for you :-)

I love those lion head scroll violins.
The Fiddling Violin
I'm not that fond of them Mandy. If you look down the fingerboard you see this Grumpy old face looking back at you. :-)))
lol! I never thought of that... But they are a neat change from the usual scroll at least.
The Fiddling Violin
Yes indeed...a work of art :-)
That is awesome!
So fun!
Thanks Mandy, I had a great time making the video :-)))
