after going from a nikon d300 to a fuji xe3 a year ago, this hobbyist can't imagine the computing power needed to adequately handle those enormous files. Not only new camera, new lenses, but upgrade computers as well. Doh! But the field of view is what excites me. Maybe like going from a small canvas to paint on to a giant piece of canvas or wall.
Great job hiking, vloging and taking photos. Yes, Zion is a great part in the fall, I like it down in the winding canyons also, but harder to photograph.
Hope you can get Fuji to send you a GFX to try out at some point in the future. Would be interesting to know your thoughts on both mirrorless MF systems out there. -Fuji also designs and produces those Hasselblad lenses btw, so you're not as far removed from your usual photo gear as you might've thought. ;)- EDIT: seems I was wrong! The XCD lenses are apparently made by Nittoh. Hasselblad claims they design the lenses themselves... but Nittoh holds the optical design patents so I'm not sure what to make of that.
That Bean You Had For Dinner the lenses for the X1D are not by Fuji. Only those of the H-line... these are designed by Hasselblad and manufactured by Fuji except for the leafshutter which is fully Hasselblad.
I would get the GFX 100 when comparing the cost of the Hassy and lenses. But the GFX 50MP cameras are a steal compared to the 'Hassle-bad'. I've adapted my Pentax 67 lenses to the GFX and its a manual focus dream. The Pentax 105mm and the 45mm are the 'leica' experience you described...and the GF 45 lens is mindblowing.
I own a X1D II 50C + XCD 45p + XCD 21. I tried before a GFX 100S and was disappointed by the ergonomics (too many buttons, heavy camera and lenses, unusable user profiles). Then I bought the Hasselblad and I really love the ergonomics, ease of use with the interface and the quality of photos. I don't regret it a second. I'm a landscape photographer (on tripod) so I don't care with slow focus. I only regret the articulated screen and maybe the bad weather sealing.

Still watching the video, but I just wanted to say that _immediately_ I noticed you were vlogging with a different camera than normal. More background separation, nice colours, good focusing, who knew the RP could give good results for video!
Looks like a great place to go take piccies!!! It's probably not a landscape photographer's camera, although there'll be some that use it for just such a purpose. I'd be more inclined to get a GFX-50R for that. It's probably more a street camera or like you mentioned, a traveller's camera. Carry a 50mm and/or 35mm equivalent lens in a small camera bag and this would go neatly over your shoulder. Nice and light and you could carry it all day. Plus, the allure of all those pixels. It might even make a good studio camera for portraits. It'd be rather unobtrusive in that regard. But, if it makes some photographer happy to use and own one, that's all that really matters.
Good to see you using the X1D Deane. I have had mine since launch and cannot see me using another system now. The quality of the sensor and lenses are fantastic. Once you see the image quality of medium format as a landscape photographer it’s hard to go back. It’s in no way a fast action camera but for mindful setup and considered use it is wonderful. I’m not aware of another system that captures images so faithfully with almost no post processing. A used X1D is outstanding value for money these days. Also once you’ve moved away from zoom lenses you never want one. I have 3 primes and they are with me always but the 45mm is my goto lens these days. I believe the X1D is for anyone who values quality, well considered products with outstanding images. I’ve never touch focused mine in all the years I’ve shot with mine. Agree on the shutter sound. Good to see you trying out the X1D. I hope it leaves a long lasting positive impression. Your last image looked outstanding.
I was hoping I'd hear from you James. I have absolutely loved what you've been able to get with your X1D and I was not disappointed at all with what I came away with. I absolutely love the feel of the camera, but I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about the faithful colors and image quality. It is superb. Now I need to try the GFX and make a decision. ;)
Denae & Andrew thank you. I’m glad you have connected with it. I have personally not used the Fuji GFX but was advised by my local dealer I wouldn’t like it due to build quality having been a Leica shooter for a long while too. The build quality is important to me as is the feel of the item. As a product designer myself I am all about our relationship with product and how that inspires us to use it more. Also worth noting is since I got my X1D I have simply lost interest in what other manufacturers are doing. I no longer feel the need to upgrade or get the latest feature. For me I have fully bonded with the X1D and it feels like a part of me making that image. I am never disappointed with the files. I have some news soon on one off price I’ve created using my X1D which maybe of interest to you and perhaps others considering the benefits of medium format. While I agree it’s not the fastest system to use for me as a landscape photographer it allows me to make a considered image and the reality is the time I spent ing eh field is saved many times over with the lack of post processing time afterwards. I look forward to more of your thoughts and hopefully you can try out a GFX. There is no denying the X1D is a beautiful item in its own right. Hope you’re keeping well. I enjoyed your video.
Exactly. My biggest concern with Fuji is and always has been build quality. And from some of the anecdotal evidence I've heard from others, 50r is certainly less durable than the x1d 1 and 2.
Spot on, James. I’ve just today bought an X1D in near mint condition, boxed, with warranty from a major retailer for £2200. That’s fabulous value. I’ve ordered a 45mm F4 to go with it, and an XV adapter to use my 50mm, 80mm and 150mm lenses from my 503CW system.
Andrew Pemberton that’s great value. I paid £9k for my body. I too use the v lenses and the 45mm P. Fantastic. My latest video shows the 250mm V in action on my X1D
after nearly a year with a GFX50R and X-T3, the things I love about the GFX are the 4:3 ratio, the detail from the 51.2MP and the "look" which is hard to quantify. That said, I prefer shooting with my X-T3 - it's just more fun as well as easier to carry around. But for IQ, the GFX is hard to beat. I'd argue over hand holding though. With all those mega-pixels it's better off locked down on a tripod so you can make the most of the resolution. Having said all that, I still don't know whether I'm going to keep or sell my GFX stuff???

In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful cameras that one can get right now. But as you‘ve mentioned, the question is who is it for and does it make sense in a world where 99% of all photos are being watched on small screens. Maybe the Hassi would be a wonderful cam for a professional fashion shooter when taking pictures outside the studio? Or it could serve a photographer who’s into advertising? Actually, it’s hard to say. But it’s definitely a beauty and I would really like to try it out myself😇. Thanks for the video, Andrew😉✌️👋!!!
I'm a wedding and portrait photogpraher currently using a the Hass X1DII and a Hass 907x - this is who it is for - also taking a swipe at GFX with its 125 flash sync, 4 million buttons none of which you actually need if you have LR. Knocking on the door of Phase One, and lastly leaping over Leica S3 and M11 for half the price - have a good one
Hi there - when you said I'm not sure who this camera is for and then mentioned landscapes - my first inclination was it is probably the last camera one would use - as a wedding and portrait photographer and an X1DII user I am excited for this - I used to use previously a GFX100 love the ability to crop 200% but they are far too complex a machine in the heat of a wedding -and the tilty finder is hopeless and so is flash sync - I have been waiting for this for three years - and here it is - good luck everyone
I have to say... Love the shots, but at the cost of that camera, my question is more along the lines of "what kind of awesome bikes could you get instead?" ^_^ I love how you looked at this camera, and how it was about your initial thoughts, and it wasn't just the good (or just the bad)!
I use digital medium format for work, I shoot high end “hero” shots for jewelry and other luxury items in my studio in England. I am mainly a studio photographer and always use artificial lighting, so my field of expertise on “medium format” is narrow, but may be helpful. The larger receptors on the imaging sensor allow for a wider tonal range in the image, and that translates into more recoverable detail in the highlights and shadows. For jewelry work, that is a big plus. I can see how that would also be valuable in landscape photography, and portraiture. Otherwise, for wildlife, journalism and sports, the “full frame” 35mm sensors from the top manufacturers are more than adequate, in a fast to use, high frame rate package, with a vast array of lenses. All my work is retouched by specialist retouchers, and they prefer the large files as it makes their work easier.
I don’t know what the light was like but the dynamic range looked really strong on the shot under the brick bridge. Beautiful detail in the highlights and shadows. Hard to tell in a UA-cam video of course but it looked fantastic
The shot at the end is lovely -- your posting this video is about two years to the day my brother and I (from New York) visited Zion. We were taken aback by the place's beauty and amazed at what a madhouse it was on a Wednesday in mid-November. Your very lucky to have such a bucket list destination in your backyard. One question: in the video you mentioned the final detail and microcontrast readily visible in the Hasselblad images which you weren't used to with Fuji APS-C. Would you say you've seen the same thing with Sony FF compared to Fuji APS-C?
For sure, we are grateful to live so close. Great question regarding Sony. I've only shot with the a9 and the a7iii and I haven't shot with the Sony a7rIV with that high megapixel count. But with those two, if anything, I felt like Sony over-processed and over-sharpened the images. They were unnaturally sharpened and I did not like the look, especially in video. I don't know why more people don't talk about this. Maybe because they are like me, and fear the response we'll get. I tried really hard to get into Sony, but just couldn't. I don't think I'll try again. At least not anytime soon.
I feel you. In my opinion only printing big justifies digital medium format. Otherwise I would stick to Fuji FX. As much as I liked the Film 500 series, I am no fan of this Hasselblad. Severe overheating and software problems and quite bad repair service from Hasselblad Europe would not pick me up this bad boy. Instead I invested in the GFX and I‘m really happy with it.
I think the discussion about who the camera is for is moot, people will have to decide for themselves. People will use what they like. I've traveled with a huge medium format film brick in the past and people were surprised about it sometimes. I didn't really give it a second thought before packing it. It was the camera I wanted to shoot with at the time. I'm considering the X1D too now. Although it would be a step down in resolution from LF film, it would still have enough, I like the colors and the files being not so crispy. I would only need three lenses probably, but the 45 would do to start with.
Being a medium format 6x7 and 617 film shooter I really want to try the Hasselblad or Fuji system but can't really ser the need vs the new Nikon Z system for example and here is why : the X1ii and Fuji 50r are équiped with a 10 year old sensor, Nikon Z lenses look absolutely amazing and the whole system is less expensive and way faster than these cameras.
It’s a bit disappointing to hear that the camera still doesn’t perform as it should in terms of lag times and blackouts. Hasselblad touted their improvements so highly and with the price drop it would have been a great opportunity to get into medium format (albeit a cropped medium format just like the GFX...). The real ‘full sized’ medium formats like Hasselblad H and Phase One are way out there in terms of financial reach (and even slower btw)
Herco le Fèvre well said , they had the opportunity to add ibis, eye autofocus , contrast and phase detect focusing etc..... they failed ....had they added that there are so many who would jump at it at this price

I don’t gear lust very often..but the GFX line has me lusting. I loved shooting with my medium format Bronica and because of that I will always be drawn to the medium format.
I think too many reviewers of this system have never shot a film camera especially a Hasselblad V system camera. They need to learn to slow down, see and appreciate what it is to create a beautiful image.
The XD series from Hasselblad could do with a much faster processing chip - to de-clunkify a lot of its operating encumbrances which you experienced as did I in use. I think you would enjoy comparing the XD to Fuji's GFX100 - I'd like to see your reaction. -:)
Would really like to hear your impression of the GFX 50R or S in comparison to the Hassie (GFX 100 is a different beast). Same sensor, different body with similar usability to your X system. I've had some (limited) GFX stick time and I love the files and find the bodies familiar enough to be able to use them without looking at the manual (I'm an X series shooter too). I've never had the opportunity to hold or use the Hassie so it would be very interesting to me to hear your comparison.
A direct side by side would be expensive. But I'm sure I'll get some gfx gear in my hands eventually. I have a feeling I already know what my reaction will be though. GFX: faster / reliable AF. Less screen blackout. Magic film profiles. More feature rich. X1D: nicer to hold, more durability, better EVF, truer to life color.
The images at 7:55, &11:40 are fantastic. Kind of disappointed to learn that it is somewhat an incomplete system, thought they had iron-out the kinks in this version II. Maybe as you said, it could be the start of great system, that will someday be replete with joystick, no-lag, video and may I hope, a bit easier on the wallet!
Sorry, I have several cameras with joystick AF points and a X1D for 2.5 years and I really prefer moving the AF point with the X1D comfortable and sensitive trackpad, point positioning is more reliable as with the joystick. The X1D short blackout after a shot comes from the sensor readout time of 0.3s that is the same the the Fuji GFX50, for me it does not matter if the viewfinder is black as on the X1D or frozen as on the GFX 50. Startup time of the X1D does not matter too. 8s on X1D and 5s on MkII are only times for a cold startup at the very beginning of a shooting. After that, you can let the X1D go to sleep (during hours without power consumption) just by pressing short the on button, you wake it up without any noticeable lag just by pressing short again the on button. You don't need to shut down the camera for a lens change. The X1D has also a Mq shooting modus (equivalent to SLR mirror pre-release) for tripod that has absolutely not release lag in Mq
What kind of camera bags do you use when shootin' outdoors? Can't seem to decide on which one is best. Standard backpacks are nice until sweat starts to build up on one's back;slinged bags solve that but it's annoying when gear are dangling about,bumping onto things.

Hi I've been using my X1D with XH adaptor and my range of HC lenses both in manual and auto focus I do prefer manual focus, the quality of the images are fantastic with very little post processing.
It's a camera that comes with a big sensor and with sharp lenses: what more do you need for landscape photography? I think you'd find that if you used this camera (or indeed MOST cameras) with a solid tripod and put your 'landscape photographer's cap' on, this camera would be perfect for it.
Not saying it wouldn't work. Just saying it's not optimized for landscape and that there are many other "better" options, at least on paper. But sure, there's absolutely no reason why this wouldn't work fine.
My favorite, go-to landscape camera is a Mamiya 6 with two lenses, and this looks a lot like one of those. So it definitely at least looks like a landscape camera to me. But even if it's durable, it must be very expensive to get fixed, which means maybe not so much a landscape camera as far a that goes.
This is the second video of yours I’ve watched. Throughout the video you keep “struggling” to figure out who this camera is for. Might I suggest you really don’t need to figure out who it’s for (that’s Hasselblad’s job), you just need to figure out if you like it or not, & if it’s for you or not. I know several people that use this for portrait work (which you really didn’t mention much here), & the images are noticeably better than those taken on an APSC or FF sensor.
Great video and thanks. I own the SONY A7R3 and R4 and few Hasselblad. We simply cannot compare Medium Sensors with full frame and 4/3s. Each category has its mission and purpose. Any person who does cross category comparison totally misses the point or they have never emerged themselves deep enough into the trenches of photography...!!!
As a GFX100 user and X-pro2 user, I love the design of X1DII camera however autofocus is very slow compared to Fuji. Lack of joystick is big problem for me and I don't understand why they can not put that thing to the camera! Hasselblad still should improve too many things on this camera and make X1DMARKIII lol
Right. Design is gorgeous. But joystick, face detect AF, a better processor for less blackout time... If it had just those three things I think it would be a lot more tempting to me.
May I ask what is the need of editing the taken photos by this camera? Or are they as perfect as you can see them on the LCD screen? Have you made changes on the photos introduced in this video?
Awesome shots! I'm behind, but that's cool that you're in UX design. I'm breaking into that, granted I've technically been in the field for 20 years? Anyway, definitely some nice takes on the UI that most people don't go deeply enough into.

If you’re going to bother slowing down and getting into medium format, then why not shoot film? It’s a lot of fun and the limitations are a help rather than a hindrance, in my opinion.
Denae & Andrew I don’t entirely agree with that, but I understand the convenience of digital when compared to scanning negs. IMO The amount of detail even from a flatbed when comparing 35 to say 6x6 is staggering. But then detail is just one aspect. Colour, grain and the overall look is another
Hi just curious have you ever consider the FijiFilm GFX 50R? I currently own the Hassey H5D but want something I can take out for street photography (I live in NYC). I do take the H5D out from time to time but prefer to leave it in the studio. So I am torn between the X1DII and the Fuji GFX 50R
the most interesting thing (stand out) with the Hasselblad is just the larger screen and smaller or thinner looking body compared to the fuji (and i wanna focus on the 50R) but in the end cost is a big deal to me and the fuji is just more affordable in body and lens (on average) and faster auto focus - at least tested the 50R myself and was presently surprised but sadly was not able to use the newest 50mm pancake lens that i heard was even faster compared to other GFX lens - sounds perfect for street photography. (but again dont know exactly how much faster compared to hasselblad but currently on average fuji is faster) i also just learn about how left shutter allows for higher flash sync than normal shutter as well, could work better for studio work. very happy surpised for the x-pan crop ratio but after a while one could just take the photo full resolution then crop later i think. but using or adapting past x-pan film lens to this X1D camera is something i never heard before or seen and sounds very interesting. the QUESTION i really hope to get answered is, if the PRO of the X1D is the len's left shutter, while fuji has a normal shutter on the body. is it TECHNICALLY possible for fuji to come out with a lens with a left shutter built in while not using the shutter on the body ORRR its not possible haha. just wondering after watched this video.
It has some problems. I must have good AF-C and at least one more fps. But it´s the prettiest camera ever made so I may have to change the way I work...
The less bottons is the best for me. Like in the old time. How I hate my Nikon, Sony and Canon compare to this marvelous Hasselblad with simplicity. No need for a joystic and 20 buttons all over.
Not sure if you purchased this camera for yourself, but I have to say that every single image of Zion featured in this video is breathtaking. I feel like every video I see of the X1D ii presents the same two recurring themes... firstly, every single image seems to look better than any other image on any other (sub £10k) camera around today (certainly, any RAW files I've managed to get my hands on colour grade incredibly well). And secondly, it's flawed in terms of being very slow and lacking the AF capabilities of other systems like Sony. I think for me it would always eventually come down to the final image - and if this video is anything to go by the final image coming out of this system is absolutely incredible.
They decided to stick with the leaf shutter, as such you are restricted to f2.2, that is a deal killer for many people who love fast lens with buttery Bokeh-like portrate shooters. Say its weather sealed, but would you leave a $16,000 camera in the rain? ) Street photography with a $16,000 camera? I think we know why that is a bad idea. Landscape without tilt screen, poor battery, good zooms-nope. So question is, who the hell would buy this camera? my theory is a old timer still woo'd by the brandname.
@@AndrewGoodCamera However, just found out that I can still get 110 film. Bought a Pentax Auto 110 Super (SLR) when I was in the service. It's kinda of a novelty but fun. Nothing says odd like a 110 SLR with an auto winder and 3 different lenses to choose from. Love your channel, you've inspired me to look into developing my own film. I've been using an Epson V750 Pro, never enough time to get caught up on scanning.
I closed my eyes and just listened to you instead of watching. There's just too much vibration in your clip. I know you're on a trail which probably isn't smooth. Perhaps you should stop when you talk. My 2 cents.
Ok ! Fair is fair ! The body itself is cheaper, but still more than the GFX 50’s by a wide margin! The lenses are much more than the Fuji.... so if you’d get the body and 3 or 4 lenses, then the GFX100 should also price wise be at the same level, while the GFX100 is superior in every other way!
As for this camera, once again, the old European photography school goes on top of Japanese gadgetry... Fujifilm should learn from them how a camera is made :P or go back to film cameras. Well, not quite.
God, I got really nervous and anxious in the beginning when you were turning around all the time and looked in every direction but the camera. Please don’t ever do that again
Poniatowski you are wrong man. The trackpad uses only a small part of the rear screen, 1/4 or 1/2 of it's surface and you have 6 possible options positioning this trackpad area. I am a left eye shooter and so I positioned de trackpad area in the lower right corner where my right thumb falls naturally, without any interference with nose cheek and so on. you have also to keep in mind that this trackpad works with relative positioning (like a mouse) ans not like the absolute positioning of a joystick. Thus you move the AF point with several little thumb strokes and it becomes very convenient after using it for a while. With the X1D all is different to conventional cameras, using it as a conventional camera means it becomes slow, unconvenient. Once you use it as it was designed it becomes very confortable, convenient, more that conventional cameras.
I am really here for your photos because regardless of which camera you use, the light you capture is always amazing!

No guys, the X lenses are prototyped by Hasselblad, final design and manufacturing by Nittoh in Japan, Fuji as nothing to do with the X system.
10:36, Fuji also made the Hasselblad X-pan (body and lenses).

Carry a 50mm and/or 35mm equivalent lens in a small camera bag and this would go neatly over your shoulder. Nice and light and you could carry it all day. Plus, the allure of all those pixels. It might even make a good studio camera for portraits. It'd be rather unobtrusive in that regard. But, if it makes some photographer happy to use and own one, that's all that really matters.
Good to see you using the X1D Deane. I have had mine since launch and cannot see me using another system now. The quality of the sensor and lenses are fantastic. Once you see the image quality of medium format as a landscape photographer it’s hard to go back. It’s in no way a fast action camera but for mindful setup and considered use it is wonderful. I’m not aware of another system that captures images so faithfully with almost no post processing. A used X1D is outstanding value for money these days. Also once you’ve moved away from zoom lenses you never want one. I have 3 primes and they are with me always but the 45mm is my goto lens these days. I believe the X1D is for anyone who values quality, well considered products with outstanding images. I’ve never touch focused mine in all the years I’ve shot with mine. Agree on the shutter sound. Good to see you trying out the X1D. I hope it leaves a long lasting positive impression. Your last image looked outstanding.
I was hoping I'd hear from you James. I have absolutely loved what you've been able to get with your X1D and I was not disappointed at all with what I came away with. I absolutely love the feel of the camera, but I wholeheartedly agree with what you said about the faithful colors and image quality. It is superb. Now I need to try the GFX and make a decision. ;)
Denae & Andrew thank you. I’m glad you have connected with it. I have personally not used the Fuji GFX but was advised by my local dealer I wouldn’t like it due to build quality having been a Leica shooter for a long while too. The build quality is important to me as is the feel of the item. As a product designer myself I am all about our relationship with product and how that inspires us to use it more. Also worth noting is since I got my X1D I have simply lost interest in what other manufacturers are doing. I no longer feel the need to upgrade or get the latest feature. For me I have fully bonded with the X1D and it feels like a part of me making that image. I am never disappointed with the files. I have some news soon on one off price I’ve created using my X1D which maybe of interest to you and perhaps others considering the benefits of medium format. While I agree it’s not the fastest system to use for me as a landscape photographer it allows me to make a considered image and the reality is the time I spent ing eh field is saved many times over with the lack of post processing time afterwards. I look forward to more of your thoughts and hopefully you can try out a GFX. There is no denying the X1D is a beautiful item in its own right. Hope you’re keeping well. I enjoyed your video.
Exactly. My biggest concern with Fuji is and always has been build quality. And from some of the anecdotal evidence I've heard from others, 50r is certainly less durable than the x1d 1 and 2.
Spot on, James. I’ve just today bought an X1D in near mint condition, boxed, with warranty from a major retailer for £2200. That’s fabulous value. I’ve ordered a 45mm F4 to go with it, and an XV adapter to use my 50mm, 80mm and 150mm lenses from my 503CW system.

after nearly a year with a GFX50R and X-T3, the things I love about the GFX are the 4:3 ratio, the detail from the 51.2MP and the "look" which is hard to quantify. That said, I prefer shooting with my X-T3 - it's just more fun as well as easier to carry around. But for IQ, the GFX is hard to beat.
I'd argue over hand holding though. With all those mega-pixels it's better off locked down on a tripod so you can make the most of the resolution.
Having said all that, I still don't know whether I'm going to keep or sell my GFX stuff???

In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful cameras that one can get right now. But as you‘ve mentioned, the question is who is it for and does it make sense in a world where 99% of all photos are being watched on small screens. Maybe the Hassi would be a wonderful cam for a professional fashion shooter when taking pictures outside the studio? Or it could serve a photographer who’s into advertising? I'm a wedding and portrait photogpraher currently using a the Hass X1DII and a Hass 907x - this is who it is for - also taking a swipe at GFX with its 125 flash sync, 4 million buttons none of which you actually need if you have LR. Knocking on the door of Phase One, and lastly leaping over Leica S3 and M11 for half the price - have a good one
Hi there - when you said I'm not sure who this camera is for and then mentioned landscapes - my first inclination was it is probably the last camera one would use - as a wedding and portrait photographer and an X1DII user I am excited for this - I used to use previously a GFX100 love the ability to crop 200% but they are far too complex a machine in the heat of a wedding -and the tilty finder is hopeless and so is flash sync - I have been waiting for this for three years - and here it is - good luck everyone

I have to say... Love the shots, but at the cost of that camera, my question is more along the lines of "what kind of awesome bikes could you get instead?" ^_^ I love how you looked at this camera, and how it was about your initial thoughts, and it wasn't just the good (or just the bad)!
I use digital medium format for work, I shoot high end “hero” shots for jewelry and other luxury items in my studio in England. I am mainly a studio photographer and always use artificial lighting, so my field of expertise on “medium format” is narrow, but may be helpful. The larger receptors on the imaging sensor allow for a wider tonal range in the image, and that translates into more recoverable detail in the highlights and shadows. For jewelry work, that is a big plus. I can see how that would also be valuable in landscape photography, and portraiture. Otherwise, for wildlife, journalism and sports, the “full frame” 35mm sensors from the top manufacturers are more than adequate, in a fast to use, high frame rate package, with a vast array of lenses. All my work is retouched by specialist retouchers, and they prefer the large files as it makes their work easier.

I don’t know what the light was like but the dynamic range looked really strong on the shot under the brick bridge. Beautiful detail in the highlights and shadows. Hard to tell in a UA-cam video of course but it looked fantastic
The shot at the end is lovely -- your posting this video is about two years to the day my brother and I (from New York) visited Zion. We were taken aback by the place's beauty and amazed at what a madhouse it was on a Wednesday in mid-November. Your very lucky to have such a bucket list destination in your backyard.
One question: in the video you mentioned the final detail and microcontrast readily visible in the Hasselblad images which you weren't used to with Fuji APS-C. Would you say you've seen the same thing with Sony FF compared to Fuji APS-C?

Great question regarding Sony. I've only shot with the a9 and the a7iii and I haven't shot with the Sony a7rIV with that high megapixel count. But with those two, if anything, I felt like Sony over-processed and over-sharpened the images. They were unnaturally sharpened and I did not like the look, especially in video. I don't know why more people don't talk about this. Maybe because they are like me, and fear the response we'll get. I tried really hard to get into Sony, but just couldn't. I don't think I'll try again. At least not anytime soon.
I feel you. In my opinion only printing big justifies digital medium format. Otherwise I would stick to Fuji FX.
As much as I liked the Film 500 series, I am no fan of this Hasselblad. Severe overheating and software problems and quite bad repair service from Hasselblad Europe would not pick me up this bad boy. Instead I invested in the GFX and I‘m really happy with it.

I think the discussion about who the camera is for is moot, people will have to decide for themselves. People will use what they like. I've traveled with a huge medium format film brick in the past and people were surprised about it sometimes. I didn't really give it a second thought before packing it. It was the camera I wanted to shoot with at the time. I'm considering the X1D too now. Although it would be a step down in resolution from LF film, it would still have enough, I like the colors and the files being not so crispy. I would only need three lenses probably, but the 45 would do to start with.
I would go for a Canon EOS R body - is light years ahead of his smaller brother. This would be my Leica system for life :P.

Being a medium format 6x7 and 617 film shooter I really want to try the Hasselblad or Fuji system but can't really ser the need vs the new Nikon Z system for example and here is why :
the X1ii and Fuji 50r are équiped with a 10 year old sensor, Nikon Z lenses look absolutely amazing and the whole system is less expensive and way faster than these cameras.
It’s a bit disappointing to hear that the camera still doesn’t perform as it should in terms of lag times and blackouts. Hasselblad touted their improvements so highly and with the price drop it would have been a great opportunity to get into medium format (albeit a cropped medium format just like the GFX...). The real ‘full sized’ medium formats like Hasselblad H and Phase One are way out there in terms of financial reach (and even slower btw)
Herco le Fèvre well said , they had the opportunity to add ibis, eye autofocus , contrast and phase detect focusing etc..... they failed ....had they added that there are so many who would jump at it at this price

I don’t gear lust very often..but the GFX line has me lusting. I loved shooting with my medium format Bronica and because of that I will always be drawn to the medium format.
I get gear lust constantly. It's only now that I'm getting more interested.in landscape that I've been listing after MF though. :)
I think too many reviewers of this system have never shot a film camera especially a Hasselblad V system camera. They need to learn to slow down, see and appreciate what it is to create a beautiful image.

The XD series from Hasselblad could do with a much faster processing chip - to de-clunkify a lot of its operating encumbrances which you experienced as did I in use. I think you would enjoy comparing the XD to Fuji's GFX100 - I'd like to see your reaction. -:)

Would really like to hear your impression of the GFX 50R or S in comparison to the Hassie (GFX 100 is a different beast). Same sensor, different body with similar usability to your X system. I've had some (limited) GFX stick time and I love the files and find the bodies familiar enough to be able to use them without looking at the manual (I'm an X series shooter too). I've never had the opportunity to hold or use the Hassie so it would be very interesting to me to hear your comparison.
A direct side by side would be expensive. But I'm sure I'll get some gfx gear in my hands eventually. I have a feeling I already know what my reaction will be though. GFX: faster / reliable AF. Less screen blackout. Magic film profiles. More feature rich. X1D: nicer to hold, more durability, better EVF, truer to life color.
The images at 7:55, &11:40 are fantastic. Kind of disappointed to learn that it is somewhat an incomplete system, thought they had iron-out the kinks in this version II. Maybe as you said, it could be the start of great system, that will someday be replete with joystick, no-lag, video and may I hope, a bit easier on the wallet!
Sorry, I have several cameras with joystick AF points and a X1D for 2.5 years and I really prefer moving the AF point with the X1D comfortable and sensitive trackpad, point positioning is more reliable as with the joystick.
The X1D short blackout after a shot comes from the sensor readout time of 0.3s that is the same the the Fuji GFX50, for me it does not matter if the viewfinder is black as on the X1D or frozen as on the GFX 50.
Startup time of the X1D does not matter too. 8s on X1D and 5s on MkII are only times for a cold startup at the very beginning of a shooting. After that, you can let the X1D go to sleep (during hours without power consumption) just by pressing short the on button, you wake it up without any noticeable lag just by pressing short again the on button. You don't need to shut down the camera for a lens change.
The X1D has also a Mq shooting modus (equivalent to SLR mirror pre-release) for tripod that has absolutely not release lag in Mq
What kind of camera bags do you use when shootin' outdoors? Can't seem to decide on which one is best. Standard backpacks are nice until sweat starts to build up on one's back;slinged bags solve that but it's annoying when gear are dangling about,bumping onto things.

Hi I've been using my X1D with XH adaptor and my range of HC lenses both in manual and auto focus I do prefer manual focus, the quality of the images are fantastic with very little post processing.

It's a camera that comes with a big sensor and with sharp lenses: what more do you need for landscape photography? I think you'd find that if you used this camera (or indeed MOST cameras) with a solid tripod and put your 'landscape photographer's cap' on, this camera would be perfect for it.
Not saying it wouldn't work. Just saying it's not optimized for landscape and that there are many other "better" options, at least on paper. But sure, there's absolutely no reason why this wouldn't work fine.
My favorite, go-to landscape camera is a Mamiya 6 with two lenses, and this looks a lot like one of those. So it definitely at least looks like a landscape camera to me. But even if it's durable, it must be very expensive to get fixed, which means maybe not so much a landscape camera as far a that goes.

This is the second video of yours I’ve watched. Throughout the video you keep “struggling” to figure out who this camera is for. Might I suggest you really don’t need to figure out who it’s for (that’s Hasselblad’s job), you just need to figure out if you like it or not, & if it’s for you or not. I know several people that use this for portrait work (which you really didn’t mention much here), & the images are noticeably better than those taken on an APSC or FF sensor.
Great video and thanks. I own the SONY A7R3 and R4 and few Hasselblad. We simply cannot compare Medium Sensors with full frame and 4/3s. Each category has its mission and purpose. Any person who does cross category comparison totally misses the point or they have never emerged themselves deep enough into the trenches of photography...!!!

As a GFX100 user and X-pro2 user, I love the design of X1DII camera however autofocus is very slow compared to Fuji. Lack of joystick is big problem for me and I don't understand why they can not put that thing to the camera! Hasselblad still should improve too many things on this camera and make X1DMARKIII lol
Right. Design is gorgeous. But joystick, face detect AF, a better processor for less blackout time... If it had just those three things I think it would be a lot more tempting to me.

If you’re going to bother slowing down and getting into medium format, then why not shoot film? It’s a lot of fun and the limitations are a help rather than a hindrance, in my opinion.

I do shoot MF film. Not often enough. But I do. Problem is, unless you enlarge, all that resolution is lost when scanning.
Denae & Andrew I don’t entirely agree with that, but I understand the convenience of digital when compared to scanning negs. IMO The amount of detail even from a flatbed when comparing 35 to say 6x6 is staggering. But then detail is just one aspect. Colour, grain and the overall look is another

Hi just curious have you ever consider the FijiFilm GFX 50R? I currently own the Hassey H5D but want something I can take out for street photography (I live in NYC). I do take the H5D out from time to time but prefer to leave it in the studio. So I am torn between the X1DII and the Fuji GFX 50R
Yes. I have a GFX50R currently. I love them both. But the 50r is more responsive, so I prefer it for street.

the most interesting thing (stand out) with the Hasselblad is just the larger screen and smaller or thinner looking body compared to the fuji (and i wanna focus on the 50R)
but in the end cost is a big deal to me and the fuji is just more affordable in body and lens (on average) and faster auto focus - at least tested the 50R myself and was presently surprised but sadly was not able to use the newest 50mm pancake lens that i heard was even faster compared to other GFX lens - sounds perfect for street photography. (but again dont know exactly how much faster compared to hasselblad but currently on average fuji is faster)
i also just learn about how left shutter allows for higher flash sync than normal shutter as well, could work better for studio work.
very happy surpised for the x-pan crop ratio but after a while one could just take the photo full resolution then crop later i think. but using or adapting past x-pan film lens to this X1D camera is something i never heard before or seen and sounds very interesting.
the QUESTION i really hope to get answered is, if the PRO of the X1D is the len's left shutter, while fuji has a normal shutter on the body. is it TECHNICALLY possible for fuji to come out with a lens with a left shutter built in while not using the shutter on the body ORRR its not possible haha. just wondering after watched this video.
Interesting question. I don't think that would be possible. And even if it was, not something that Fuji would explore.
Regarding the screen you could use the ipad or phone
It has some problems. I must have good AF-C and at least one more fps. But it´s the prettiest camera ever made so I may have to change the way I work...

Not sure if you purchased this camera for yourself, but I have to say that every single image of Zion featured in this video is breathtaking. I feel like every video I see of the X1D ii presents the same two recurring themes... firstly, every single image seems to look better than any other image on any other (sub £10k) camera around today (certainly, any RAW files I've managed to get my hands on colour grade incredibly well). And secondly, it's flawed in terms of being very slow and lacking the AF capabilities of other systems like Sony. I think for me it would always eventually come down to the final image - and if this video is anything to go by the final image coming out of this system is absolutely incredible.
The camera was on loan to me by Hasselblad. I really wish I could own it. It made my top 10 cameras of all time list.

Nothing says odd like a 110 SLR with an auto winder and 3 different lenses to choose from. Love your channel, you've inspired me to look into developing my own film. I've been using an Epson V750 Pro, never enough time to get caught up on scanning.

Get the GFX100... a much better and even cheaper camera than the Hassy... Hasselblad has dropped the ball - too little camera for way too much cash...
I think you should double check the prices. Where I live, the Hassy is over 4k cheaper and the lenses are comparable.
Ok ! Fair is fair ! The body itself is cheaper, but still more than the GFX 50’s by a wide margin! The lenses are much more than the Fuji.... so if you’d get the body and 3 or 4 lenses, then the GFX100 should also price wise be at the same level, while the GFX100 is superior in every other way!
As for this camera, once again, the old European photography school goes on top of Japanese gadgetry... Fujifilm should learn from them how a camera is made :P or go back to film cameras. Well, not quite.

Poniatowski you are wrong man. The trackpad uses only a small part of the rear screen, 1/4 or 1/2 of it's surface and you have 6 possible options positioning this trackpad area. I am a left eye shooter and so I positioned de trackpad area in the lower right corner where my right thumb falls naturally, without any interference with nose cheek and so on. you have also to keep in mind that this trackpad works with relative positioning (like a mouse) ans not like the absolute positioning of a joystick. Thus you move the AF point with several little thumb strokes and it becomes very convenient after using it for a while. With the X1D all is different to conventional cameras, using it as a conventional camera means it becomes slow, unconvenient. Once you use it as it was designed it becomes very confortable, convenient, more that conventional cameras.
