Great video. As a painter myself this is perfectly accurate. One tip I would say is, I would fill any defects after applying the mist coat as that paint layer will show everything then run a pole sander all over afterwards. 👍
Great tip!
Correct
I agree. I'm always white out first to highlight imperfections then fill afterwards.
Totally agree.
So you’d sand then mist coat and then fill?
We have two new rooms and a hallway and stairwell with new plaster courtesy of a loft extension. This video is a great validation of what I was doing anyway 😂 but today I learned about sanding mesh and the pole head - that is going to make my life much easier and within ten minutes I had a click and collect order waiting 😂 thanks 👍
50 / 50 worked perfectly for me - thank you!
How on earth did the internet know I had some walls plastered yesterday. Today’s recommended video was very apt 😊
Haha it’s marvellous
As a professional decorator myself, id recommend to anyone to do any filling after the mist coat as the bare plaster can absorb any moisture from the filler and may make it not sit on plaster properly. Also i sand after mist coat
👍
100% right fresh plaster will just suck the water straight out of the filer almost instantly making it very difficult to feather away u need a barrier in between ie a mist coat not only that the mist coat helps u to find all the imperfections so ur advice is bang on
Absolutely u right
Correct
My 7 year old, 4 bed house has smooth cement walls. The wally that painted it first time did not give the walls sufficient drying time nor did they use an appropriate mist coat. Now my fun job is sanding and repainting the whole place due to all the blistering and peeling paint. The first coat must be thin enough to soak into and seal the surface. I 100% agree a 50:50 mix is ideal, if a little splattery. Cheers and looking forward to all your upcoming renovation vids.
Ouch, you’ll get there. Cheers
@TheDIYGuy1 About halfway done so far doing it room by room on weekends, etc. Also, because it's smooth cement render external and internal (SE Asia construction), it helps to use an alkali control. Luckily, Nippon Paint (Japan Dulux equivalent) makes such a product, but I still water it down 50% to be sure. Hope your reno progress is somewhat quicker. Cheers
Very clear. Going to do it now.
Thanks buddy, much appreciated 👍.
It's 4 o'clock in the morning, can't sleep....... time to mist coat😂
Very timely video. I’ve just had to redo all my ceiling tape and jointing that I messed up first time round and have just finished sanding down the easifill I used to fix it all. Was going to just crack out the zinsser 123 that I used the first time but now realise a mist coat would be better first. One thing I’d recommend - wear safety glasses and face mask if you’re sanding more than just a tiny bit of the ceiling. A crazy amount of dust came down, which again speaks more to my inability to use easifill properly more than anything I suspect!
Your right about the mask. Often I do wear one but take it off to record and forget to put it back on 🙈
😢😅😅
I’ve had multiple houses dozens of newly plastered rooms and have never once mist coated and never had an issue either
great followed exactly great job
70 paint 30 water ratio for me , just seems easier to apply as not overly thin , better to fill after the mistcoat though, make sure not to use a Vinyl Matt as well , however the Screwfix bare plaster paint is excellent for mistcoating. Been in the trade over 30 years and it's probably the best i've used for the job. Nice vid mate .👍
Thanks. I will try it sometime
Do I need a sealer when patching plaster?
brilliant, simple and clear always. Thanks Cameron and the others that comment, the videos and tips make for an easier life and dare I say an enjoyment of decorating/diy
Glad you like them!
Of course the manufacturer will say dilute 10%, that means you will use more of there paint !😂😂 I agree with you, and do a 50/50
👍 good point
Always 50/50👌
“More inches are better” while he’s got that cheeky smile 😂
😂
Great video yes I have always mixed 50/50 when mist coating and never had a problem I always put mist coat on first and then fill anywhere needed also give it a light sand over once dry I find the sand paper never clogs up
👍
Hand sanded 40m2 ceiling last week. I wasn't aware pole sanders existed and even during sanding it didnt occur to me to look for one. Even while using my pole to apply the mist coat i never thought, "this would also be useful when sanding".
Haha sometimes the stuff we overlook is a surprise. I often find some new way of doing something and wonder why it’s taken me years to figure out a better way
Cheers dude. Great and timely video as just about to do this in my own house. Your the second person I’ve watched who says, 50/50 so defo think it’s the way I’ll be going 👍
👍 all the best
Have you ever tried Screwfix bare plaster paint? Ive always used that and it gives a much whiter coverage than a mist coat which i've found saves me one coat later on. Also a lot less mess from splashing.
I haven’t, but only due to being stuck in my ways 😆
Ah, thank you Cameron for the plastering video, hopefully one day you will be able to put up a video of plaster being applied but I never knew about that misting trick so the vid's a good un.. Keep them coming, Paul..
Thanks a lot paul
Another great video , Thanks for your time and effort
My pleasure!
Excellent advice. I now know to mix 50/50 rather than 10% mix, which I have used in the past. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
The sanding thing is the bit I am getting mixed messages about across the interwebs. I will use the method you opted for. Thanks.
I watered down 10 year old Craig & Rose 50/50. Worked fine.
👍
Great video, using the tub is a great idea making clean up easy. JD
50/ 50 spot on great vid
👍👍
Nice one thanks for that. We pretty much did this on our new extension.....well i say we i mean my wife did lol. To clarify she's the painter... because i don't use enough paint apparently and the wallpaper hanger as i don't hang it straight 😂. But i layed all the flooring and put the kitchen in so it balances out lol. Anyway don't know why I told you that but love the channel keep them coming.
Haha thanks for sharing 🤗
My wife tends to do the painting as well, apparently I make too much mess. Perhaps we should start a club or something 😊
Lol! Reading these comments made me laugh so much because I can relate 😅 in this case though I'm the wife that paints and my partner just did the plasterboard and kitchen flooring, now is time for me to paint it all 😂💪🏽
Thanks for the video, learned something new. So what's the benefit of a mist coat Vs undercoat?
Brilliant advice Cameron, i certainly agree with 50/50 and never had a problem (do get covered in paint spray though). I wonder if the people that have had issues have used vinyl matt, which I think is a no no for misting. Look forward to the next video 👍🏻
Thanks a lot. You could be right 👍
@@TheDIYGuy1but you’re waving around a tub of vinyl Matt.
Thanks. Love the sanding mesh instead of sand paper tip. Also pro decorator years ago told me 50-50 mist coat 👍 Another tip for people who haven’t filled their lungs for the last 10 years tho - pop on a mask when sanding, especially overhead. Your lungs thank you in advance
👍👍
Fantastic uncomplicated easy straight forward advice
🙌
Any tips to avoid dripping when working on a ceiling using a mist coat?
Another vote for 50:50 (using the cheapest white emulsion I can find). I also add a generous splurge of PVA. Again, no problems with that mix, but it does sound like the addition of PVA isn't really necessary.
👍
Great video nice and simple and straight to the point . What pole do you use and it’s size please :)
Great video!! Can I ask, does sanding fresh plaster not create visible scratch marks once painted?
Cracking video. Thanks for the tips.
Another great useful video thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Perfect explanation bang on 👍👍
Thanks
These videos are great, keep up the good work
Glad you like them!
Really clear and precise / little bit of charisma - quality video 👍
Thanks for another great video Cameron. One question please. After rubbing down, should a damp cloth be used to get any dust off the surface before painting on
the mist coat ??
This may be a dumb question but can the dulux pire brilliant white be used for the final voat after misting or should i get a separate ceiling paint.
Great vid for a newbie like me and is just about to start decorating a newly plastered celing. So glad ive come across your channel
Thank you it will help
Oh and I certainly agree with your statement about the more inches the better 😜🤣
😂😂
Enjoyed this video. Any advice for using a air sprayer for Misting.same principle as normal?
Yep and works very well
I prefer cracks holes indentations it gives life to the walls and looks great with new paint.
Another awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it
My sister in law has just had her new bathroom fitted and had new lights and an extractor fitted in the ceiling, the ceiling was replastered but they didn't repaint it (don't know why they didn't it cost a pretty penny but that's my sister-in-laws choice), she has asked me to paint it for her and she was told my tge guy that fitted the bathroom that once the ceiling was dry it would need to be sealed using a pva solution but your method is brilliant, so do I need to seal it with pva or do a "mist" with diluted emulsion.
Love you informative videos 👍
I would go with my method and then give it two coats of crown bathroom emulsion.
Great video !!!! thanks
Glad you liked it!
Should you do a mist coat on plaster if you’re going to be tiling over the plaster also?
Oh yes, otherwise the fresh plaster would suck the moisture out of the tile adhesive
We bought our house brand new 25 years ago and because we had two children, one of 15 months and the other only three weeks when we were due to move in, we paid a professional decorating business to paint it from top to bottom for us. Unfortunately they never bothered with the mist coat and I have been paying the price for their laziness ever since. Especially the ceilings. Almost every one of them has peeled.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Moving a socket further away with the cable extending further (adding to cable length)
👍
Ive just done a wall with 15% spoke to someone at dulux techical support as had seen so many differeing opinions.. Im sure it will be fine and hasnt peeled by the morning.. 😂😂🤞🤞🤞🤞
Be fine 😀
Was that 2 mist coat though or one from the pot
Ever have any issues with chalking?
Have to say I agree with the 50/50 ratio. I had paint peal off when I followed the manufacturer rs recommendations. Cheers
I like to wipe down with a damp cloth , to get rid of the plaster dust.
👍
Good video thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Can I paint directly onto old plaster? Brought my first house and I stripped the wall paper off, back to the old plaster. Would this be okay to just paint directly over?
After sanding is it worth wiping down the walls with a damp clothe or not? Will the dust affect the paint sticking?
Great videos
Great advice. Will u be removing light panels above the doors mate? It would be good to see the process.
Your welcome. I’ll see what I can do
Great video
Thanks!
very good video !
Thank you very much!
After removing wallpaper, a builder recommended lining papering the walls before painting. Is that a waste of time and money? Wouldn't a mist coat do a good job, on walls in reasonable condition?
"More inches are always better" savage 6:29
😂
Thanks for this. Seeing as you'll be painting soon, can you do a video on how to get clean paint lines? I've always struggled with that.
Let me see what I can do 👍
Funny enough I've just had a large garage plasterer top to bottom and my plasterer said the exact thing you've said. Do 50/50. It's perfect.
👍👍
Love the content. Just started renovating a house, so.. new subscriber. Ever had darker patches show through your mist coat where your polyfilla patches were?
Thanks for the sub! It’s likely a difference in moisture as the filler won’t suck the moisture from the paint like new plaster does
@@TheDIYGuy1 ah I see! Thanks for the reply. I’m sure I’ll have many more questions 😅👍🏻
In your new house will you be installing fitted wardrobes? If so it would be good to watch and see how you would do it as its very expensive to get a professional in. Cheers
I think possibly further along in the process. I will see what I can do for you. Cheers
@@TheDIYGuy1 I'll wait until then thanks
I assume you wipe down after sanding with a damp cloth/sponge?
It's a horrid job, but a must. Great video
Thanks
I did 50 50 prep with water and silk but when it dried it was no longer smooth and raised in parts. I'm a bit confused what to do. I only tried a small area to try it first. Any advice would be welcome ? Thanks.
Silly question but whats an alternative If you dont have the tool to mix the emulsion and water?
I didn't fancy getting mist coat sprayed everywhere so i used screwfix bare plaster paint on my freshly plastered living room. Went on great but suppose it could be deemed uneconomical at 20 odd quid a tub but I was happy with it.
Thanks for sharing
Hi should you still do this to old plaster. I'm steaming old paper off first then paint directly onto the wall
After your 2nd mist coat, how long normally do you wait to apply the main paint?
Yes, yes, all very informative. But what about the results of the lawn treatment ? My lawn looks terrible and I'd like to see yours before I commit to weed and feed.😮
Haha I’ve no moss remaining. The dog has wrecked mine though with her wee spots.
Good answer, blame the doggy. 😉
I just done one mist coat and its come out pretty well. Do I need to do another or am I fine to add colour?
I like to do two but you can get away with one 👍
I always do 50/50 mix for mist coat and add a little bit of poly bond for grip .
I have removed wallpaper from our walls and have scrubbed and washed the wallpaper glue residue away. I am getting ready to paint, should I prepare the plaster for paint in the same way with the miscoat (?) as if new?
Aftter skim the wall, did you put a sealer?
If sandpaper is clogging up like that, then the plaster is still too wet to sand it down. When it's dried out properly, all you need to do to clear the sandpaper is slap it and the dust will fall right out of the grit.
Definitely not. This particular ceiling in the video had been plastered 3/4 weeks prior to filming and was totally dry. Yes you can tap it to unclog however the mesh is still ten times better
Was that a low or medium pile roller?
Medium 👍
Do you have videos on repairing the internal corners with tape?
Not as yet
Does this method also apply to wallpapering??
What grit sand paper do you use for new plaster walls? I’m using 80 but I feel like it’s too rough
I’m so going to get that mesh thank you for the recommendation
Sure, anytime
Should i wipe the freshly plasteed wall down so its dust free before applying a mist coat?
I would definitely do so as any dust will interfere with the adhesion of the mist coat!
Perfect timed video.. Having a outbuilding plastered this week. How long would you recommend for plaster to dry naturally before placing on misting coat? (with currrent cold UK summer weather). I will defo use the 50/50 mix recommendation for mist coat.
Thanks. That’s dependant on what’s behind the plaster but in the current climate id say 3-5 days.
Can you apply matt paint straight onto the plaster
Hey, I’m a new subscriber and have learnt a lot already. I have a question regarding painting. I’ll be filling in a door way with plaster board. What’s the best way to prep this for paint or wallpaper?
how did u know that was a litre of paint please ? is there measurement of scuttle ?
These buckets have numbers inside 😅
Helpful video for me!
Can you spray the mist coat and do you reckon it would be worth doing that way?
Yes, you will see me doing this in a future episode of the renovation(already been filmed)
Was there a video about how to remove the artex? I'm buying a 1970's house and it's everywhere. If I can remove it myself then I will but I know there's a high chance it has asbestos in it.
I’ve clicked on your Amazon link and I can’t find the 180 sanding mesh the next to it is 220 or below 120 which one should I use?
Please help as I’m a beginner and on budget
All blessings 🙏🏻
Reading comments I'm not sure what to do now.
Use filler before or after the mist coat??
I have lots of dents and divots in the skimmed over plasterboards.
Lots of large deep areas also where the plaster has popped off from the drywall screws.
I would say use filler afterwards. If it's bare plaster the mist coat is applied to, the plaster will suck any moisture out of the filler and will flake off. The mist coat will provide a barrier so it will be easier to fill any imperfections. If your walls/ceiling where it's popped out from the screws are previously painted, simply add a watery coat to seal the hole then fill and paint over after with normal paint. Same with skimmed plasterboard damage minus the mist coat - just fill and paint over making sure surface is clean before painting. Hope this helps 👍
Armsted contract matt. Straight on. 2 coats done
👍
