But many forget that the letter is the most important part and should be focused on thar.

There also were gifts, drawings, we asked questions and so on. Sometimes even made little "friendship books" - mini albums, where people wrote their hobbies and addresses to find new penpals or things they collect. But the letters were overall pretty generic-looking. (sure, sometimes we'd go fancy, but there was no particular kind of style, or themes attached to a letter- just random stuff we thought was fun and nice). But this is totally something a bit different from what I was used to. More on the crafty side, and more thought out, like a tiny art project, if you will. I'm curious, what in particular makes a letter to belong to modern penpal style, and makes it different from just... letter)))

For her, though, she did many of the same things that we do now! (Decorative paper, stickers, themes, gifts, tea, postcards, etc.) The term "pen-pal letter" just means a letter to your penpal. Nothin' fancy. My mom always called it the same. :) Edit: She also loved to make things crafty and stuff, but maybe that was only in her community.
