The reason for the alternate theme music is that for a short period of time in 2003 WWE lost the licencse to use them,
they are not public domain songs, they come from a production library.
The Hardys had their theme replaced in Shut Your Mouth, Raw 2, and Crush Hour.
Booker T had his theme replaced in Crush Hour, WrestleMania X8 and XIX, and on the dvd of Judgment Day 2003.
To prevent this from happening again WWE bought out those two songs to own them like they do their in-house music and the songs have been discontinued from their respective production libraries, Extreme Music and Kosinus Music.

I'm not sure the reason why, but Booker and the Hardy's also had different songs in Wrestlemania X8, The Hardys had had a different theme in Smackdown SYM and Matt had a different theme in Wrestlemania 19

Jamie M Bookers is also production music, there are just some tweaks they made to it, like the ‘can you dig it’ part. Which shows up in this game then changes once the original production music plays. The game devs just didn’t want to pay for the production library , they are not free to use, you have to buy the license for it too

Booker T's theme "Rap Sheet" isn't a Jim Johnston theme, and was always listed separately in the end credits of other games along with other non-Johnston songs. Look at the original SD v R credits. Its listed as "Courtesy of Associated Music Production LLC." So Crush Hour must not have bothered to get permission to use it.

WWE actually DID call it Hell in THE Cell. Just one time and one time only.

The Hardy's theme is not public domain, it's production music, ie, anyone can use it if you're willing to PAY the licensing fee (which is why probably wasn't included). As far as the booker T theme goes...who the hell knows why, probably the same reason.

“THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE!” - Scott Steiner
The comparison to this game’s plot to modern WWE network and overall dominance is really interesting. I never played this one but it seems like a decent enough way to kill some time.
As for Booker and the Hardy’s themes, I don’t know why they wouldn’t be included. They showed up in many other games at the time. Booker’s theme may have originated as a Turner owned piece of music (since a lot of WCW themes were just recycled Turner Network songs) but I’m not 100% sure of anything aside from I BELIEVE it’s called “Rap Sheet” originally.
As always, another really solid entry into the strange land of obscure wrestling titles. Really interested in the next one!

This game and that time in WWE and video games was so fun for middle school me. I loved this game. I played the shit out of this game. I unlocked everyone and nearly got the belt for everyone; I was insane and still am.
This was a surprising release and I remember being at EB Games and picking it up. I was waiting for the upcoming yearly WWE PS2 game but was shocked that there was something already available months ahead and at a cheaper price than usual. WWE was really doing things outside the box at the time. Crush Hour and this destruction derby, WrestleMania XIX on GameCube had a Revenge Mode which took wrestling outside the ring; a very unique and memorable story mode, WWE released a CD called WWE Originals where Superstars and Divas sang their own songs. Even on TV, they were playing the knockoff themes for a little bit. Ric Flair had a different theme at the time too. It kind of bugged me because I was and am a big fan of entrance themes and many of these new replacements sounded like a downgrade to me.
The controls felt good to me. One very useful thing is mastering drifting, probably with using the R buttons. With that you can run circles around people and maneuver around any stage with ease. Like any driving game, it takes some practice.
I haven't played the game in 20 years, maybe one of these days I'll fire it back up but for now I'm happy to watch these videos to bring back some memories.

Excellent video as always! Like you, I've not consumed any recent WWE media in a long, long time (heck, I haven't even booted up one of the games in over a decade), but I love your retrospectives. I picked up Crush Hour when our local Blockbuster Video had its massive going out of business sale, where any previously-rented PS2 games were $3. You're right about the controls being crap, but I got a solid $20 worth of fun out of that $3 disc, so I can't really complain. It was certainly no Twisted Metal Black, but if I wanted to play TMB, I'd put in TMB. :)
Crush Hour was from the last real era in console gaming where "that's so crazy it just might work!" ideas got the green light. You still see the occasional oddity released today, especially in the PC market, but nobody would do a bizarre hybrid licensed crossover like this in 2019. :)

Bookers music is another song the WWE didn't own, it was used in the kids in the hall series and a few commercials before it was used as his theme in WCW. They have to credit it the same way they credit white wolf for the gangrel license.

Fun watching the video. Glad you have such positive memories of some of the modes and sounds like you had fun with it. We would have loved for it to be even better, but it had plenty of challenges. For the different arenas we were looking for different modes that we could adapt. And things were more distinct in my original design, a lot of what made the game feel like wrestling was forced out by management. I started with mechanics that were meant to feel like contemporary wrestling matches with the ebb and flow as you get beat up, build up your special meter and turn things around. But a lot of that uniqueness got ground away by management/THQ feedback that kept pushing it more and more to just be like Twisted Metal. So it goes.

OH man, Crush Hour lol this game was so weird. Was like twisted metal but wrestling

  • @jimmylarson7856
    @jimmylarson7856 5 років тому

I will continue to defend this game til the day I die.
Admittedly I've never played nor cared to play a twisted metal game so maybe that's why I feel the way I do about this game.
To me crush hour is great. With a few exceptions wrestling games get stale fast. This 1 just doesn't to me.
I love blowing someone up and hearing my guy taunt them on the screen. "You think you can mess with Brock Lesnar" "Rob-Van-Dam I'm cool like that" "Woooooo" "I'll make you famous". Ou get the point.
I also love JR's commentary "Rob Van Dam just grabbed the twisty rockets".
This game delivers what every game should strive for and that's entertainment. It's plot is so absurd it's hilarious, it has most of our favorite entrance themes at the time, and the commentary and taunts I already mentioned.
This game is still 1 of my all time favs and I never get bored with it.
I look forward to the Showdown review. I'll never forget pre ordering to get my exclusive Andre the giant action figure from GameStop and legends of wrestling tshirt. Plus the warrior teasing a return to the ring and the payoff being this game and it being unfinished filled with glitches due to acclaim going into bankruptcy but I'll save that for my comment on that video. I do hope you mention legends 1 and 2 at least. 2 was super cool with Jimmy Hart allowing the license to the theme music he owned and the shoot interview footage unlockables for some of the wrestlers

Great comment, I appreciate you taking the time. And yea, don't worry, I will touch on Legends 1 and 2. Showdown is the main event of the series, and I never intended to cover the whole thing, so let's swing for the fuckin fences, hahaha.

This was a great video-as always! I remember getting this game when I was younger and being pissed when I loaded it up and saw it was CAR GAME.... I had no idea it wasn’t a “wrestling” game when i bought it. Come to think of it, I never played it again actually. It was just that ONE time when I first bought it... Your video makes me wish I played it... Seems like it could have been a fun alternative to the other WWE games in the line up.
