- Personnel on the ship alerted the Maryland Department of Transportation that they lost control of the vessel, and local authorities were able to close the bridge before it was struck, "which undoubtedly saved lives," Pres. Biden told reporters.
The president spoke after a massive cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a major bridge in the Baltimore harbor, early Tuesday morning, leading to a near-total collapse of the span.

The ship is owned by Grace Ocean and operated by Senergy Group. It was currently being chartered by Maersk carrying Maersk customer's cargo. So there are three companies all with massive amounts of insurance to pay for the bridge to be rebuilt.
My other question is why were there no tug boats taking the ship out? There are zero barriers in place to keep vessels from running into the bridge supports, so why no tug boats to help in case a ship has a failure?

@@JosephRossetti I live in Baltimore that bridge was built from the steel that they got from Bethlehem Steel before they went under. Now the steel that will be used will be degraded japanese/china steel
Not hard but time consuming, I have seen this type of thing done before and they usually use shaped charges to break the bridge up into smaller chunks and it is lifted out onto large barges bit by bit.

I know infrastructure is expensive but almost the entire bridge collapsed when the supports were struck. There were no barriers along the base of those supports to prevent accidental or intentional structural failure. It was too fragile for the greatest nation in history. We can do better.
When was this Bridge build, that would determine what safety guards were needed. This looks like a very old brigge. This bridge will not be rebuilt a new modern bridge will have to put in to replace it.

There is safeguard that can stop a fully loaded cargo ship. It’s been accepted by engineers internationally that the only way to stop the load of a ship that size would be to create a massive sand berm and if you did that the port would no longer be a deep water port anymore.

This reminds me of the I-35W bridge collapse here in Minneapolis Minnesota. I believe it was in 2008. Our bridge collapsed because of cracks in the pylons and the infrastructure structure of the bridge.

This same ship had an accident in the first year after it started out in Belgium. I hope that we go ahead and do what we have to do to get a new bridge made but I hope that we go after the owners of the company of that ship and sue them recover what the cost is‼️ I hope we can build a better and stronger bridge in that channel since that is a major shipping hub. And it looks like we need to have a much stronger support beams. It would be great if we could rebuild it so it could withstand another accident.
