Chinese manufacturing is all depending on the company contracting it or owning the factory....
Most companies just use cheaper chinese labor for cheap stuff, don't enforce any quality control, oversight, or anything and literally tells the manufacturers make us the cheapest shit that barely meets western specs so we can sell it for cheap.
There's zero issues with quality manufacturing in China, just most companies doesn't want to manufacturer quality products in China...
Lars from Østmo here. Just here to correct some facts that are a little off in the video:
- Insole is 6mm., not 6oz. 6mm. is closer to 15oz.
- The lining is cowhide, not deer. It Comes from the Masoni tannery in Italy.
- We switched from using steel + leather shanks to all-leather shanks after the boot showcased in the video was made. All of these come with all-leather shanks now.
- When Ticho says he just finished the Stitchdown Patina Thundedome in a pair of our collab boots, the pictures are of some ugly boots I made 10 years ago, haha!

@@user-lc5uo5uj2f And that's exactly the problem you run into with these multi party collaborations. The price becomes inflated not because you're getting a better product but because everybody needs to get their cut. And in the end, it's the customer who's getting screwed.
I think a very important question to ask specifically because you have the actual salesman in the video, is this boot representative of an actual production or was it made specially at higher finishing for rose anvil?
Interestingly enough these are samples, so the materials used in this are actually a little different than the true boot. The True boot uses only leather shank instead of leather and steel to cut down on weight and the insoles used are 6mm which is closer to 15oz

Much wool is so cheap that it costs more to shear the sheep than the fleece sells for. In the UK the traditional hill sheep wool can sell for less than $2 per fleece. And you'll be able to fill a lot of boots with that fleece. Admittedly wool has to be washed and processed but cork has to be harvested and mixed with binding agents. Is it really more expensive than cork ?
Cork is also cheap af my friend, and the quantity a boot takes is very very very small. The filling is just a matter of preference and function, you will save literally cents choosing one over the other
@@CarlosValentor Thanks. I thought that might be the case. I can understand using wool for environmental reasons as the binding agents in cork filler are not particularly nice but it's not going to make any difference to the price of a boot like this.
They are not buying full fleece. They use scrap. The stuff that is swept off the processing room floor.
May as well use human hair swept off the barbershop floor.

Much of the full fleece wool produced by sheep is chucked away or used in bulk for home insulation or sound proofing etc. and is not expensive.

They are superior to Viberg in every conceivable way, Vibergs are a 500 dollar boot for over 1,000 because they are made in Vancouver, these are 5,000 dollar boot for under 1,000 because they are made in China.

@@netmatrix75the debate isn’t that the workers are skilled or not, its that they are being paid peanuts. Thats the entire reason the labor has been moved to china, vs Europe or North America. And since they aren’t paying the high labor, it’s logical to assume the price should be less. The actual materials don’t make up a large % in cost, it’s the labor. And for this brand, all that labor savings, instead of being past to the end consumer is all going into 1 or 2 guys pockets - not the skilled labor. Thats the issue people are complaining about.

Like any factory, the level of quality control is what matters. The best way to ensure quality is by employing the best makers. That’s why I like Jim Green boots and shoes. The company continues to pay people more than other companies in the area. Don’t get me wrong, I’d pay more for boots made in the USA but no one makes the JG style. I do, however, have Horween Chromexcel boat shoes made in Maine.
He cannot be trusted to question quality control given he has the actual salesman of the company sat next to him. This video is as reliable as the old mvmt watch ads

They will not pay as much as any of the pnw book makers to the craftsman and instead will pocket the extra

My Israeli Army boots were fairly comfortable but absolutely nothing beats the comfort and speedy lacing of my Gen I hot weather boots, what I prefer to call "Desert Stormers". Sure wish I had those in my army service, would have made getting dressed in an alert so much more faster and less awkward....

XBXS is machine lasted and machine goodyear welted. Iron boot is hand lasted and either handsewn welted or handsewn stitch down. Also XBXS use foam and iron boot use wool for filling.

@@MichaelE.Douroux I think It’s due to 2 things really, one is like cost of labor per country. In general China has a lower cost of living so manufacturing can be cheaper w out taking away their quality of life. Like for example you can live a very good life in Asian countries making less money than in Western European countries at least from my experience in the Philippines. And 2 it’s cost of labor is divided up more amongst multiple workers that run a tight operation vs one man who is making everything himself. One person making a single high quality product is always gonna be more expensive than the same product w the some quality and construction being made at a higher scale. Lars actually commented on this post so you can find his comment and dm him directly if you wanna know why :) scale usually cuts down on cost vs the work of a single man making everything himself

In one location, a guy literally walks down the street and buys all the materials to make boots. In the other location, a guy can buy basically NONE of the materials to make boots locally and must source them from outside. Now thinking about how this affects everything else downstream. Think about shipping out of a small town in Norway vs shipping out of the 'shoe making capitol of China'.
There's SO many variables going on here - and being in an industrial hub vs literally not even being close to a [relevant] industrial hub is huge by itself.

@@NiiminTVjust ordered a pair of the Canada West Red Dog lace to toe boots, they use 7-8 oz Seidel work leather too and full leather mid soles and heel stacks (on some models) and I got mine for under 300 cad out the door
I think it would be a really neat comparison to see if there’s any differences between the boots they brand themselves and the ones they’re contracted to make (the Dayton CSA work boots and non MTO bikers are made by Canada west, and there’s also a line of them sold by Bailey’s forestry supply as the “red dawg” logger boots)

⚙️I’d rather machines be used so that I could afford all the great components in the boot. I’m buying an Iron ranger because I can afford it. That is if they ever get my size back in stock. It’s a beautiful boot, but right now it’s just a dream for me. Maybe they could make a more affordable series in the future. I am glad that there are still people who know and continue the traditional craft. Imo, it’s never good when knowledge is lost. 💙

The grain of the insole leather is so coarse, it looks like OSB from Home Depot when they show it magnified.

Yearn are another dress boot from China considered by many to be amongst the best made boots in the world. Good and talented boot makers inChina tend to go for the high end as it's hard to sell good quality for a good price in China. People can always find cheaper here. So they tend to push the quality to the max and then try to sell them for a fair price.
Made in Italy with Chinese worker.
Made in Canada with Indian worker.
Made in USA with Mexican worker.
Doesn't Matter where its made anymore. It all about the material and QC of the brand

That's not true at all. Worker rights/safety regulations/wages, environmental responsibility, and supporting your own community/country are all bigger factors than the end product. I don't care how good a pair of boots is if it was stitched together by some 14 year old kid working 12 hour shifts 7 days a week for $2/hour, all the while getting long-term health damage from inhaling toxic glue fumes in an unventilated warehouse all day long.

A friend of mine who is very familiar with Chinese manufacturing once said that Chinese factories will build whatever quality you are willing to pay for. So to say Chinese = junk is silly.
Do the Nocta "Love You Forever" AF1s. They allegedly have higher leather quality than regular AF1s. Drake influenced the design and it'd be interesting to see if it's a marketing scam
That aint 6oz, just looking at it you can tell that insole leather is thick af.
If you want to compare PNW brands with these, compare their MTO prices. Vibergs do not have the level of QC that Iron boots has for sure, and let's not even get started on the finishing. But at the same time, Viberg is a comparatively huge, way more orders, they produce faster and more boots per month than Iron boots.
All american bootmakers have had their fair share of qc issues that are quite well documented if you're in the boot scene. Nicks, Whites, JKs
Dr Sole is generally the superior outsole compared to Vibram or Dainite. They are just cheaper to purchase and import for Asian makers, so Chinese and Indonesian makers in particular use them more and are less common in the western hemisphere.
If you're not already biased, you know that these boots are simply better finished, with more skill and time required to make the boots to that specification. Comparing these with japanese makers would be a fairer comparison. And yet people dont seem to have a problem paying 1 to 2 thousand dollars for their products.
It's the same in the dress shoe industry. Brands like acme shoemaker, Oct Tenth, yearn also cost within the 700-1000usd range. And they consistently produce better footwear than C&J, Carmina, Alden who also compete within the same price range. You literally get what you pay for with these Chinese brands. They can charge such prices because, anywhere else, its at least 300-500usd more like Berluti, Stefano Bemer, G&G and Edward Green who easily cross the thousand dollar threshhold for their most basic offerings and you wouldnt see much difference if at all(brand, lasts and history mainly contribute to these prices).
Appreciate the boots for what they are. If all you want to do is play politics, just say that from the start.
Japanese brand Visvim also has their boots manufactured in China. Goods made in China can be worst or best of quality depends on budget.

I will agree that the tongue looks a little thin compared to everything else in the boot. I prefer a little heavier leather for the tongue. I have a pair of Truman’s with a thin tongue compared to my other Truman’s and it’s a big deal.

When I hear "made in China" I automatically imagine sweat shop massive operation where the only goal is massive volume. It's obvious this is a very different concept. Love the idea of someone who simply won't make compromises. Neat boot.
Sweatshops exist in pretty much every poorer country that we exported our industrial labor to. Made in Vietnam? Possibly a sweatshop, same thing for Mexico, Cambodia, Peru, etc etc.
@@hewhodoes8073it’s the opposite. “Made in Vietnam” is the certified mark for sweatshop. Their workmanship is much worse than China for a little lower price. I worked directly with a few of them and they themselves respect Chinese manufacturers workmanship, who probably own parts of their operation anyway, as Chinese manufacturers are offshoring works to Vietnam.
China is a large country with a lot of skilled workers and artisans. You should go to an art market in china and see the level of skill that the craftsmen have in pottery, painting, furniture making and design. Its more than just sweatshops there, there are a billion people spread over a large area. I'm not chinese, I just lived there as an expat for a few years in high school.
@@andrewnicon Yeah, Chinese people can be as talented as any other people from any other country or continent. The reason why Chinese products have historically been crappy (at least since WWII) is because companies, often from the west, want to cost cut and increase the share holder profits as much as humanly possible. That's why sweat shops exist, not because the Chinese just have a genetic propensity for them or whatever.
Skilled workers make good products. Not your money issue with Gucchi, it's their workers.
A quality boot made in China for its dirt cheap labor, though in this case instead of passing the saving on to the customer like GS, they pass it on to themselves.

Completely different boots, materials and construction method, with Viberg you are getting a 500 dollar boot for 1,000 because they're made in Vancouver, with these you are getting a 2,500-5,000 dollar boot for less than 1,000 because they are made in China.

Exactly. Whites and Nicks sell $800 boots and probably make a 10% profit. This guy is selling $800 boots and is making probably closer to an 80% profit. His entire business model banks on people not caring about the fact that he's exploiting third world labour.
The concept in a Norwegian context is taken from the folk costume "bunad" which is a Norwegian tradition with roots from the Middle Ages. Traditionally, the bunad was sewn by the women in the family and passed down to the next generation. In more modern times, the bunad is sewn by specialized small manufacturers in Norway with local materials. The price is high (approx. $5,000 or more incl. silver jewelry) due to high local costs and wages. This eventually led to some manufacturers moving production to, among other places, China. However, the retail price of Chinese-made bunads is not significantly lower and the profit margin is therefore large. There are generally many complaints that the quality is not the same as the Norwegian-made bunads and that the loss of jobs to China is unfortunate.
@@adamcuthbert9498 You have no idea what a boot actually costs to make in materials if you honestly believe these are $2500 - $5000 boots. The bulk of the cost comes from the skilled labour, not the materials. One type of leather over another might add a few extra hundred to the price at best.
I live in Florida and work outside in the heat. I am a fence contractor and would like to know what is the best hot weather leather work boots for hot and muddy work conditions.
Guangzhou and beautiful are an interesting combination of words to be in a sentence. but nice boots regardless.
My only gripe, there is multiple stories over the years of manufacturers baiting and switching on the final production run, that's the only thing worth being sceptical about

Hey! Lars from Østmo here. They aren’t based on M77, not sure why that is the picture used to illustrate a vintage Norwegian military boot in the video. They’re based on the earlier “Feltstøvel” (field boot) patterns from the 40s, 50s and 60s.

I just hope the majority of the pricetags for these boots is going to that small team of artisans in Guangzhou, and this is not a case of these Nordic guys undercompensating them while lining their own pockets. It's Rose Anvil's responsibility to attain transparency on this matter. I'm 100% happy paying even above $1000 for a boot of this quality made in China by those skilled Chinese craftsmen, so long as they're actually being paid what they deserve.

@@zaszzAs of writing this, three years into the collaboration, nearly all of my earnings from this venture have been put back into ordering more lasts, materials and sourcing leather for future boot makeups. Oh and I splurge on a set of shocks for my car when it was in dire need of them. Other than that I haven’t taken a cent out of the company, and I don’t even have a registered business. This is a labor of love for me and I honestly don’t care about making money from it at all.

@@zaszzthe workers would get paid their salary, not a portion of sales. Their pay wouldn't be affected by whether they're working on a Collab boot or not. Maintaining quality like this means keeping around a skilled workforce, and it sounds like they're paid a living wage and treated well.
Regardless of the boot’s quality, the fact that it’s made in china and it costs more than a pair of nicks boots is outrageous. I get that it is finished well and maybe im just not a dress boot dude but I could get a pair of hiking boots from nicks and iron rangers for the same price as for one of these shoes that i would only wear on occassion
The price of an item doesn't reflect how much you use it, it reflects how much it costs to make and keep the lights on...

Done consultancy work in manufacturing: China indeed has been used as a footwear manufacturing hub for lower to mid tier shoes, and that has been the perception people have gotten as to that being it all it can do: not true. China can make luxury goods to a quality standard as good as anything in the US, Europe or Japan...but the price advantage diminishes somewhat. Right now, Bally produces many of its shoes in China, as do other high end brands for their sneakers and dress shoes.
Judge the product on its merits, not the perception.

The brand is headquartered on The Island of Formosa. Taiwan is not recognized as a real country by The United Nations.

Taiwan sets itself apart from China in terms of political system, and is protected by the U.S. and allies if any invasion is attempted.

The comments in this section are weird AF.
Everyone here wants footwear to be made better and last longer, but then they complain when footwear is made better and to last longer with people who know what they're doing and like doing it. This whole sentiment of lowering costs is what got us to the point where work boots are made to last 6 to 12 months. It's fine to not be able to afford them - I can't afford them. They aren't meant to be boots that you just buy at a store, they're a luxury good that borders on a work of art.
Then you have the China thing. You're fine paying 8 dudes in a shed in the US, Canada or other western country to make your expensive boots, but you won't pay 8 dudes in a shed in China to make the exact same type of boot? It's this weird misplaced economic nationalism that makes no sense to me. You should have issues giving your money to large corporations that exploit people in China to make their cheap shitty products, not a bunch of dudes that enjoy making quality products. At least, I hope the dudes and lasses are well paid, they deserve it for all this labor, if they aren't... well, then we have a problem. Not to mention that most of the products, technology and other shit in your house is already made in China. You aren't escaping the fact that your money will end up there.
And I get that this video is pretty much an ad. You gotta do what you gotta do. Weston might've embelished and been more charitable because the boots were provided, and because Ticho is there, but IMO, it's inarguable that the boots are made well and that boots of that quality often cost that much. Just remember how much Alden's cost for the quality they are.
China makes what makes a profit.
