2024 09 03 Final Fourty Eight Hours Temple Crew - Temple of Together - Burning Man 2024

The final 48 hours are perhaps the most challenging and important work for every Temple Crew. It's a three act performance.
1) Prepare to burn the Temple
Sunday morning the Temple is closed to the public and the Crew puts on their hard hats. All loose items must be carefully collected and placed in the center so that everything burns. Every piece of the structure is collected in such a manner as to be sure it all burns. It can be a heart-wrenching experience.
2) Burn the Temple
A dedicated and professional Burn Team prepares the structure after Temple Crew has gathered the parts together. The Burn Team knows how to be sure that everything burns quickly. The job of the Temple Crew is to witness the destruction of their work. Months of work turned to ashes, along with tens of thousands of messages left by the people of Black Rock City. The Crew gathers in the front of the circle to watch in silence together. It can be a cathartic experience.
3) Remove all trace of the Temple
All glass and metal are gathered to be recycled. Scraps of wood are gathered to finish burning, then any ash larger than a nickel is collected for landfill. The crew sifts thru everything several times. It can be a therapeutic experience.
When the crew leaves, all that is left is small bits of ash on top of a two-inch layer of decomposed granite. That layer is scooped up, filtered and sent to be recycled. The Playa Restoration Team will inspect every square foot. The goal is that there be no trace whatsoever that a huge structure was erected, and burned on the playa.
Leave No Trace is not just one of the Ten Principles of Burning Man. It's a way of life for Temple Crew.
