To be honest, I’m not even sure “Swiss Made” or “Japan Made” mean all that much. The watch industry really could do with internal or external regulation to force transparency.

Yes. Swiss Made means that at least 60% of the value should be made in Switzerland. Again, do you know how much of your Oris or Longines is really made in Switzerland? In the "affordable category" I assume that Swatch is actually the most true to "Swiss Made" 😅. Made in Germany is a bit different, as said in the video. With watches, typically the parts are sourced outside of Germany and then finished and assembled in Germany. They say, the problem is, that if you make it 100% in Germany, you can only sell products in the A.Lange price category which is kind of true I guess.

I bought one of these when they first came out. I didn't really care if it was made in Germany or not, I just liked the design. Everything lined up, build quality seemed really good, lume was great, bezel action was good, it was running about 2 seconds fast a day and I took it in the ocean and it held up just fine. Even if it is made in China it's still a great watch.

  • @kasperreisner

One would think that it is a mark of quality to have the words "Made in XX" written on the dial. The reality is that it often only means that the cost of assembly by far surpasses the cost of the rest of the production of the watch. So the funny thing is, the cheaper a watch is to produce in the far east, the easier it is to legally mark it as "Made in XX". This has to do with the regulations in the EU, US and Switzerland that a certain portion of the expenses from producing the watch need to happen in that country (including designing, marketing expenses and assembly).
I am not saying that it is the case with this particular watch. It is just a reality in the watch industry in general that you cannot ignore.

As stated in the video at 5:22 (and also displayed on screen), to be labeled "Made in the USA," all or virtually all of the parts must also be made in the USA. More specifically, all “significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin.” Very few (if any) watches qualify to use the Made in the USA logo because many of the parts necessary to make a watch are not manufactured in the USA. That is why you will see some companies (Vaer, Shinola, some Islander watches, etc.) advertise that their products are "assembled" in the USA. In 2016, the US Federal Trade Commission made Shinola stop using the term "Built in Detroit" because it implied that their watches were Made in the USA, when in fact they were assembled there from foreign made parts.

The « made in Italy » part made me think about something curious. I own an Unimatic « Sponge Bob » that has « made in Italy » written in its dial. If the legislation requires that it is 100% made in Italy, then the watch info is wrong (or misleading), as the watch contains a Seiko NH35 (a japanese movement). Either the « made in Italy » tag use is not that strict, or the Unimatic folks have a very broad understanding regarding the « made in » legislation in Italy. Imho it should be « assembled in Italy » or « designed in Italy », but never « made in Italy ». And the same could be said about/applied to many other small and independent brands (Baltic, Undone, Spinnaker, Zelos etc)

Generally, you will need to climb up the horological ladder to find German watches with higher German manufactured content. I understand that Nomos makes their own in house movements. Damasko is gradually growing their capabilities in their quest to become a comprehensive in-house manufacturer. Glasshute Original makes significant modifications to the Swiss movements that they use, and make their faces and hands in house. Stowa offers in house movements in many of their watches, IIRC. If you look hard enough, you can find German made watches which are genuinely made in Germany, but they will fall into the luxury watch category. Dornbluth and Sonne comes to mind. Their watches are made entirely in house in Dresden, by hand, to order and in very low volume.

Great episode, the look at what “made in…” means was interesting. I knew there was wiggle room on what Swiss-made means, but I didn’t realize there was that much. I think “made in Germany”, as with “made in Switzerland” varies largely by company. Both Dekla and the Ickler brands (Archimede, Limes) are proudly and explicitly vertically -integrated with everything except the movements (Swiss) made in-house. Do Sinn and GO do the same? Anyway, I really like that Marc and Sons. Love the yellow on black, that thing would look awesome on a black (or yellow?) FKM-type strap. Shame about those twelve o’clock indices. Hard to buy a watch with it wearing its QAQC issues on its sleeve like that.

The last step, meaning coating and packaging was performed in Germany...the blank was made in Taiwan, if I recall correctly.
To be fair, yes this series was more expensive than the standard stuff, but it also was quite a bit more durable.

    Micro adjustment:
If there is only one hole, there is NO micro adjustment. That's simply where the springbar connects the bracelet to the clasp. So, NO adjustment whatsoever, unless you count the watch falling off your wrist as an adjustment option.
Logically, when there's two, three or four holes, it means that there is only ONE, TWO or THREE (precisely: n - 1) options for adjustment. One hole you will always need to use, thus the number of ADDITIONAL holes defines the number of micro adjustment options.

That's very true... 'Made in China' isn't lying to you - unlike many others. I worked for a stove company in Exeter, UK. Gazco/stovax all their parts are 100 percent made in China and they label it as 'Made in the UK', with Union Jack's printed everywhere.

If I would want the best of Swiss I'd buy a Hamilton or a Patek. If I wanted a German I'd go with a Zeppelin or a Lange. If I wanted a Japanese, I'd get a Seiko or a Grand Seiko. They're all great countries with great watch making legends.

Great video, I had always wondered about Germany's rules here! I'd love to see one on "Made in Japan". I've learned a decent amount about Seiko's global footprint from various Seiko Group shareholder/environmental reports. But I know little about the actual rules beyond hearsay.

Good point, I was thinking same thing in supermarket last week about germany cheese made in Hungary, or about some german power tools that are not metabo :) I think that lots of German watches are different and very good made Damasco, Sinn, Stowa, but not all of them Laco and lots of others - only if price is come down. And for sake of argument France watches are also 'not cheap' but I have not any desire to have made in France watch like Yema?

Knot Design is truly Made In Japan. The Musubu Project they started is their driving premise - made in Japan, by Japanese, for Japan.
The steel, the cases (same factory as GS), the movements, all the straps, etc.

Mine is my daily. It’s a grey 41mm ceramic model.
      Here’s what I think :
It’s the best entry level luxury Swiss diver imo. Better than the Tissot Seastar 2000 for sure and better than the SW200-powered Oris Aquis (Calibre 400 is more expensive) with the new exclusive eta movement they added in the last couple of years. Not quite on Tudor level though.
Looks great, feels great, runs +2spd, they offer 3 different sizes on both the new (39,41,43) and older (39,41,44) models as well as the choice between automatic and quartz.
Finishing is superb, the sunburst dial is one of the prettiest I’ve seen on any watch. It has quite a lot of character with those distinctive oversized numerals and crown guards.
Couple of moans and niggles as Jody would say :
      - Bracelet is meh. The clasp is clearly the worst part of the watch and those high polished centre links on an otherwise fully brushed Toolwatch don’t make sense to me. The rubber strap is fantastic though and has a much better clasp.
      - What makes its character is usually a love it or hate it thing.
      - It wears big with those long lugs and large crown guards
      - Lume is OK but not on Seiko level
      - 21mm lug width is a pain if you don’t want to go with the OEM options
      - Might be just me but for the price they’re asking I think they could make sure the threading on the crown and case back makes the logo and engravings align perfectly
      - While the movement is amazing it’s not an in house movement. The concept of an « exclusive » third party movement is weird imo
I think that’s pretty much it from my owner standpoint. Great watch overall if you can live with those negatives.

    • @gazele88
      @gazele88 2 роки тому

Curious how your scoring system works, 3 plus points against 6 negatives but you still come out with the opinion that it's the best entry level Swiss driver?
I put looks great and finishing together as I think they're one and the same FYI.
I read that and by the end I'm thinking you've changed your mind!

    • @williamb8764
      @williamb8764 2 роки тому

@@gazele88 Honestly the negatives aren’t as significant as the positives.
Most of them is just me being picky. Some aren’t even real negative points like the fact that the design is polarising or the non in house movement (it’s still a great movement). I just tried to point out everything that came to my mind.
It’s still the best sub 1500€ dive watch I’ve handled by quite a large margin.

@@williamb8764 about the threading lining up when closed-- neither Rolex or Omega worry about that. With wear and thermal expansion changing clearances I'm not sure how well you can make it work out unless you're willing to do everything entirely by hand.

Especially with mechenical watches, you can't reinvent the wheel!
THE classic movements simply come from Switzerland, no matter where they are assembled or refined.
When you get right down to it, not even AUDI or Mercedes are 100% made in Germany. Here, too, components such as axles and/or engines etc. are manufactured and assembled abroad.
The assembly and quality control then takes place in Germany.
This is also the case with watches, with the exception of a few manufacture movements.
(By the way..I am German :-))

Thanks for the perception-busting content. So much of watch marketing is story telling. How do we describe the value of our watches to others… someone recently asked if my Direnzo was another, high cost brand. She knew less than me about watches, so I responded with, “It’s a Swiss micro brand,” which is technically true and makes it sound somewhat exclusive to those who are not watchinistas…
Anyway, thanks for the content. I’ve learned so much from watching your videos, both technically and aesthetically…
