I would hardly classify elm st and 9th and 12th st as the hood. Honestly the "hood" parts are like those weird half streets like muhlenberg st or going close to cotton st. Theres always something going on near cotton.

I moved from a really nice charlotte suburb and went to high school at Berk’s catholic in reading suburb, now live in roxborough a Philadelphia suburb. I’ve seen a lot of nasty things as a little white girl and so has my boyfriend as delco blood as a white boy. We hope EVERYONE finds peace and stays safe out there. We love Philly and hope the culture changes back from filth and violence
if youre into checking out small hood cities, consider taking a stroll around Lawrence, MA, just north of Boston. Manchester, NH can get pretty wild in certain areas on a hot summer night too.
There used to be a store on 10th St. that I went to from time to time. This was back in the early 2000's. Never really felt unsafe there. It was usually in the middle of the day on Saturday, though.

If you really look well it is clean. Rarely saw any garbage on the street as you drove. Those homes are more than 100 years old. They need to be remodeled for sure. A lot of Hispanics live there. I lived there as a child. Walked to school " Amanda E Stout and NEVER was approached by a car or a person( like nowadays). I was 9 and most of the kids as well walked to school. Reading doesn't have big companies so jobs they would pay well are not much; therefore, the town gets by whatever local businesses are present. Brings memories.
Most of what was on Pike Street all gone now. Goosehouse gone, 1402 gone, Mike's Rising Sun gone, Brass Lantern gone, all but the 'Pike' still be there. West Reading is actually still pretty nice.
I moved out here in 95 from the Bronx New York and thought it was sweet , this ish was hood ass hell lol my family was one of the last ones they lived on the 400 block of pear street & buttonwood, that block was so bad they tore all the houses down , that was like 97

I think its just how zoning used to be done since towns wanted to pack as many people into the area as possible to boost local businesses, plus to have things accessible on foot.
