Done salvage for years. Started way back when there was no Copart etc.
However you tubers have ruined the market, because their business model is UA-cam and content not the actual car. Since you guys can afford to make huge losses you pay well over the odds for damaged cars and thus make it unprofitable for the actual guys like me who do it for a living.

Have to agree, and other people think it's easy to repair damaged cars after seeing a few videos and it's pushing up prices. Scrap yards are getting a thing of the past and are more like dismantling factory's that charge over the top prices. Best to watch as entertainment only because if Chris isn't making money with all his contacts and friends just shows it's difficult to make money now.

@@My_father_was_a_toolmakerI disagree. It’s not best just to watch he doesn’t make because 1) he overpays, 2) he mods and as you said his model is UA-cam not the cars themselves. We have a very successful business model and this wave of people thinking they can do it because they watched a MA video will pass, take the rough with the smooth as long as your process is good and you have buying rules you’ll always make money.

Matt is wrong about VIC testing.

30 years repairing crashed cars. simple rules make money,
    1. buy unrecorded cars from marketplace not overpriced copart etc,
    2. always buy simple cars made by ford vauxhall etc as plentiful cheap parts,
    3. always buy in a colour thats popular and can swap panels without blending,
    4. mechanical damage is cheaper than body damage.
    5. get the car done quick before depreciation eats at profit.

Our volume and full circle business model is the reason we make so much, that and sticking to our own rules.

I’ve been a mechanic for a bit over 25 years now. I have had the opportunity to rebuild and upgrade a few cars in that time and those are the most rewarding jobs. To put something safely back on the road that would otherwise either be crushed or stripped for parts makes me feel like I’m doing my part stemming the tide of mundane bland cars of today. Makes me smile seeing Chris and his friends with the same mindset. Keep it up.

It was the VIC check, the VIC check only checked the vehicle identity check hence VIC. I took some cars for VIC checks with light damage even before they were repaired. They found so few stolen cars is why it was cancelled, VIC checks never checked the safety of the car.

One thing a lot of people fail to mention is the person doing the repairs. All the successful UA-camrs have great personalities and voices/accents that you can actually make out. This makes watching them so much easier. There are many out there who mumble and grumble to the camera. Personality, on screen appearance and filming make a massive difference.

Matt Armstrong is wrong regarding the old cat C inspection. The dvla inspector did not inspect the car all the inspector would do is check the vin plate is correct for the car. A mot inspection is a requirement by most insurance company’s before they will issue a car. The ultimate inspection, which is comprehensive and really necessary where cat S is concerned, is Auto Line. They’re the only inspectorate recognised by HPI, if the car passes the register will be endorse ‘Damaged condition inspected’ a certificate is also issued confirming this. In my option, legally ALL cat S repaired cars should be subject to a qualified inspection before being allowed back on our roads, that way a user or buyer is assured the car is safe for the road and ALL the boggers would either have to repair cars correctly and safely or pack up their shady business!

6:55 Correction about test. You do not need to even do a MOT test as long as it currently has a valid one. If the car is taxed, insured, MOTd and is road worthy you can simply use it on the road as normal. The check was only a VIC check to ensure the car was not cut and shut, vins matching up. That was removed in 2015.

Complain all you want about the ways we go about things in the midlands but honestly the amount of lads that I know who don’t even need to work full time jobs, just because flipping cars makes them a comfortable profit. I especially think it works so well in Birmingham due to the fact that there’s probably more mechanics and bodyshops than any other trade here so repair bills are fairly priced due to them all under cutting each other.

MA is wrong with his comments, in the last 24 years I have been rebuilding salvage vehicles they have never had to have any sort of inspection that inspected the quality of the repair or structural integrity of the vehicle. Category C’s used to required a VIC (vehicle identity check) by the dvla which only checked the vin numbers were in place and hadn’t been tampered with.

  • @a.t.g000

chris mate, i mean this with 0 disrespect, but the difference between you and someone ready to start their car rebuilding business is, you repair and then modify them which eats into ur profits, obviously someone trying to maximise their profits isnt going to mod the car so i feel like you should of done a separate chart which shows how much profit you would of actually made if it wasnt for the mods.
for example on the golf R
you said 5k mods and parts included
parts were airbag kit and a radpack, id say both estimated at around 2k in total so realistically you made £8000 profit there.

For example i have a audi a4 b8, i got it 4 years ago for 8000€ and i see on copart audi’s like mine but crushed damage for 5000€ and seeing the damage it is over 2000€ for fixing,so with the tax you have to pay to copart, transportation and repairs it’s going to be well over 8000€ and you get a crashed damaged audi for more money then getting a brand new second hand one! Ps at the action they sell for crazy amounts off money but in 3-4 days they pop up again on the auction! Total scam copart…it’s only good for guys like Chris, MA, Tavarish and guys that have the money and they do it for content

Mat was wrong about the vic by the way, that was only one cat so same as mot. Look, the UA-camr way isn’t the way to do it (or is😅). We stick to 3 models of car, we stay in a certain price bracket and we know what those 3 models sell for day in day out. You have , HAVE, to make contacts. Contacts are the key to making good money, you need people for delivery, windscreen, coding (to a point) by that I mean airbags, helps if they also do keys, you need a good mechanic and MOT tester, you need a good bodywork shop that won’t rip you off and understands what you’re doing and why. That’s the difference between making good money and not making any. Never buy one with the bonnet closed in pictures, my mate did that and there was no engine in it. Always work out profit margins first and factor in money for problems you can’t see, always think worst case scenario for the model of car you’re buying. Don’t start out with a 10k car, it’s ridiculous. Start with 1k, there’s plenty to made around that bracket I promise you that, there’s less risk and people don’t care if it’s a cat car at that price either. Buy for 1k, spend 400, sell for 2k the same day it’s fixed rinse and repeat. If one is properly done then keep it for spares on others (exactly why you stick to the same models). I don’t want to give away too many secrets (wink) but the key to even better money is making it a full circle business(es).

Good to show how much it can cost alot of people don't understand how much it can cost I have always made the most of none modded standard cars where the head lights are 100 pounds not 1000 but it would be boring for UA-cam good job chris

Hi Chris, so unlucky with the SVR, no way you should have had to take a loss on that stunning rebuilt car! Do you know where the car is now? I would love to track it down, it's my dream spec!

The V.I.C. check What is the category C it was not to check any of the repair, it was actually to make sure that the vehicle was still the same vehicle It’s a vehicle identity, check all they actually look for the numbers to make sure you have not taken a stolen car and put your information on it

If you do it yourself and you mean it all body paint and mechanical then yeh you can make a nice wage off it but with another job so I your own time.. if your paying to have stuff done then no you can't make a living off of it. People paying too much for cars in the first place spoils a lot of the ar market what ever your looking at part cars ect

these youtube channels and everyone trying to be in the car business have increased the price on copart. even for a regular car you are bidding against ppl overseas who can profit much more than you can. even very popular cars on copart used to be over 50% off if they had a salvage title around 8 years ago or so. more bidders and higher fees have ruined the profit margin. I dont see the purpose of buying a salvage title for the same price that you can get a clean title with high mileage. might as well just get the clean title and drop a new engine in

last thing we need is an ad for more noobs who don’t know what they’re doing to buy crashed cars and raise prices further for the ones who do know what they’re doing. There’s absolutely crap shoddy work done on cars that have been through the hands of shops that have worked on cars for years, let alone a noob who hasn’t touched a car in their life but now wants to start out
