- The Trapeze Swinger by Iron & Wine
Please, remember me happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin
The time when we counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill and up until
Someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention
But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say that the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their gray handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry
And please, remember me at Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white by midnight
We'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came, I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
But now you're lit up by the city
So please, remember me mistakenly
In the window of the tallest tower call
Then pass us by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like "Lost and found" and "Don't look down"
And "Someone save temptation"
And please, remember me as in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Beside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
Swinger high as any savior
But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running
In circles 'round the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter's
So bright on cinder gray and spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"
And please, remember me seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turn from me
And said the trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last, the clowns that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
Had an element of danger
So please, remember me, finally
And all my uphill clawing, my dear
But if I make the pearly gates
Do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around the frightened trapeze swingers
Na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na, na-na, na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na, na-na, na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na, na-na, na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na, na-na, na-na-na-na-na
Songwriters: Samuel Beam
Thank you. I think he existed to deliver this song in the way that people like me needed to hear it.
his version really is something else.
Gregory is criminally under the radar when I think about just how many people who are out there needing his music, but won't find it. I'll never be able to tell him personally, but he is the reason I'm alive today. All Shades of Blue literally pulled me into the light
I’ve seen Gregory live, it was amazing but I don’t think I could handle seeing him play this live…I’d fall apart! This song has saved my life over and over again 😢
It’s incredible what music can do. It reaches to the soul. Sending you love brother 🙏🏼
Same
Same
Me too, I would want to be stuck in that moment for eternity.
It isn't often you see something this perfect. Legitimately a spiritual experience.
One of the best covers ever
My favorite part about this video is that you hear the usual bar room chatter at the beginning but by the end you can tell everyone is wrapped up in the moment! Gregory is an absolute genius at that! Amazing!
i love that!
Lifts you up !!! Finding it hard to handle the "murmers" and the Whoo Whoo's.......always some Clowns 'round....!
I know!!!! Some people have no idea the magic they are in the presence of.
They don't know the real gravity of the lyrics.
This is Sam Beam’s most genius piece of writing. And Gregory singing it is a blessing. I would love them to sing it together. They’re both great with harmonies.
It’s been 17ish years since I sat in someone’s lounge listening to Greg noodle chords after a Telluride open mic festival (which he won, of course). He’s come a long way.
absolutely!! it would be so amazing to see them both dance the trapeze.
It makes me feel some kind of way when he sings this song.
“I’ve heard from someone you’re still pretty”- as someone going through a breakup, that rocks me
Best line in the song for me
Who the hell can see forever, Greg? Perfection
Wow such an intimate setting. Would love the opportunity to see him live. Thank you for sharing this.
It was definitely a lifelong bucket list! Finally got tickets last year after a decade trying.
Gregory's voice is a combination of falling oak leaves and the blossoming of Forthiisicia blossoms ....how ever the hell you spell that delicate yellow early blooming flower....
Ehhh, close enough 😆
I was here, i'll never forget my car getting stuck in snow on the side of the mountain lol!!! It was worth it tho!
Such a beautiful and graceful cover 😊❤️🌹🎼🎶
wow.. instantly crying. Such stunning beauty.
So beautiful
Gets me every time and I am thankful.
A blessing of a song….🙌
Gregory is my favorite musician and my birthday is Christmas Eve. Someday I hope to be able to attend this show
Looks like an awesome venue!
Astounding
Kaylan, TY for introducing me to the music of GAI. I miss you! (Matt in Iowa)
Dude wears some rad hats, I dig it
Screaming is such a weird reaction to this song
this song would have been perfect if the guy shouting had not been there. Don't be that guy...
How do you even get into something like this? Is it a surprise appearance or a friends and family thing?
How in TF could there be so much chatter when the judge is holding court?
I see said the blind man 😂
I've been wondering if there was another cover version of this song Greggy did
Fuck the man, goddamn right
All love.
i love the enthusiasm of a crowd, but are the people who attend his concerts cut from cookie cutters? exactly the same hooting and hollering at every one it seems. like... are they drunk? seeking attention? think theyre cowboys/girls? i dont get it
Isaakov
Such a great song if it wasn't for the guy(s) hollering in the audience.
Who the hell can see forever, [anyway].... It works with Greg's version but not for Sam's.
"Fk the man" UGHHHHH. Yeah, fck my ex. But only a more serious note, this song helps me through tough times.
I love that he loves this song, and wants to sing it. I, too, think this song is magnificent in every facet of its composition. So when I want to enjoy it, I'll listen to Sam perform his song, because this is not it.
