Saw a quote today that reminded me of you: "Think not of the books you've bought as a 'to be read' pile. Instead, think of your bookcase as a wine cellar. You collect books to be read at the right time, the right place, and the right mood." My favorite book was probably either "How Are You Going to Pay For That?" (Nonfiction) or "The Bear and the Nightingale" (fiction). Have a great weekend, Emma!

Also, your excitement about Pedro Paramo makes me want to read it this year! Right now I'm in a Kawabata wave (my favourite from 2022 was Beauty and Sadness), so let's see where it leads me

I’d say my favorite book of 2022 would have been “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë. I’ve always told myself that I’d eventually read it and then when I finally read it with a book club, I’ve been kicking myself wondering ‘why haven’t I read it ten years ago?’. I’m definitely on board with reading more classics this year, especially ones from your ‘A GAME OF TOMES bookclub’ video.

My favorite book of the year was "Last Words from Montmartre" by Qiu Miaojin. It's a collection of letter written by an older woman to a much younger one, discussing their relationship. It can be read in any order since the letters don't follow a chronological timeline, and they eventually lead to the author's suicide. It is by faaar one of the best books I read this year.

hi emma!! on the topic of dark tourism, for my creative nonfiction class last semester we read "Dark Tourist" by Hasanthika Sirisena, which is a collection of cnf essays about their life but specifically the essay "Confessions of a Dark Tourist" reminded me of The Disaster Tourist. Hasanthika is also a professor at my university, and they are absolutely lovely, and I very much recommend their collection if you are interested at all in continuing to read about dark tourism.

I really enjoyed hearing your personal list of your best books of 2022. When you started talking about Icefields and your attachment to winter, the cold and glaciers, I thought again how much you need to read The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. It was one of my personal top top books of 2022 and is a classic. It is set on a planet called Winter and a good part of it involves an extended journey across a glacier. It is in the sci fi genre I think but is one of those books that transcends genre. Happy new year!

Love love love all the themes you mentioned regarding exploration of memory and ice being used as metaphor. One of my favorite examples is Marilynne Robinson's novel "Housekeeping". The book heavily uses ice as a symbol for the past being unstuck in time. There's so much rich imagery in the book, it's probably one of my favorites.

Always love these wrap-ups, your descriptions are so enthralling! I added a couple of these books to my TBR!
    My faves of 2022:
    -House of Leaves
-All Quiet on the Western Front
    - Beowulf
And the best discovery for me this year: the work of the 19th century Swedish writer Selma Lagerlof. I started with the Bannished, the story of a man who returns to the small village of his childhood after he seemingly did something irredeemable during a polar expedition that went wrong... I didn't think I would enjoy this book so much at first, but the way Lagerlof weaves the themes of redemption, purity and corruption, the landscape etc... ah! It prompted me to read her most famous work: the Saga of Gosta Berling, which is by far my favorite book of the year. Each page is a painting, a poem and an opera at the same time. Totally epic, I would love to know what you think about it if you've read it!

On that note, I would recommend one of the best books I read this year, by a Moldovan author:
    - El verano en que mi madre tuvo los ojos verdes- by Tatiana Tibuleac, (The summer my mother had green eyes) Unfortunately, it hasn't been translated into English yet, but maybe someone here reads in Spanish or French and may enjoy it.

My favorite book I read this year was Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler. It’s short little novella that was the basis for the movie Eyes Wide Shut (one of my all time favorite movies). Also, being a movie nerd I also dug Red Carpet by Erich Schwartzel a nonfiction all about Hollywood’s reliance on the Chinese theater market and how that influenced the way modern blockbusters are made. Looking forward to following your reading journey in 2023.

Not sure if it was this year or last, but reading Alexis Wright’s ‘The Swan Book’ was one of the highlights of my degree. First time in maybe 4 years that I’ve discovered a book of that caliber (even emailed my professor to thank him!), truly unique. If your world literature project has yet to reach Australia, I’d encourage you to consider it, especially as it’s more specifically indigenous Australian literature.

Dear Emmie, I?m reading "Paradise lost" thanks to you. Honestly, I thought I was going to find it boring and complicated, but to my surprise I'm really enjoying it. What a beauty of a book. You should record a chapter just talking about this wonder of Milton. Thank you so much! Kisses from Argentina 🥰

Thank you for this wrap up. I do like your taste in books and I mostly noted all the books you mentioned, here. And about my favourite reads in 2022, I'm going to pick two SIGNIFICANT ones. "Lady Life" and "I Will Never See the World Again" by Ahmet Altan. The first one is a novel, and the other is a non-fiction book. I HIGHLY recommend them. They introduced me to Turkish Literature and encouraged me to read more of it.

My favourite book of the year was 'The Fifth Season' by N.K. Jemisin and it has made me want to read everything she has ever written. There is something so beautiful and real in how disturbing it is. I thought I'd hate the setting but it is one of those that sound odd in a summary but offer so much potential for learning if you spend time inside them. The characters are unusual and daring, everything is multi-layered and I cannot wait to read it again and again to uncover all of it. Definitely one of the most intelligent books I have ever read.

I don't know if you need any recommendations but this year I'll challenge myself to read a great brazilian classic book called The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, by Guimarães Rosa. Everyone here in brazil talks about how this book is challenging but rewarding at the same time !! If you want to read more of world's literature, I'd recommend this one to try 💕💕
Also, one of the best books I read this year was one of your recommendations, letters to a young poet by rilke. You said so many good things about the author that I was convinced to just trying reading it, and I'm glad I did. Thank you for your hard work in 2022 💕💕💕💕💕💕
