I was born in Chicago but grew up in Baltimore. As Child I use to sit outside my grandparents house on the Southside of Chicago and watch the trains go by. Chicago is train capital of the U.S because every freight and passenger train which Amtrak goes through Chicago from east to west and north to south .
The three videos you posted in the Cleveland and Chicago areas are totally awesome...most enjoyable...thanks for making them and posting them...enjoy and be well, VZ
I certainly didn’t say anything bad about it did I? How can I get knock anything that runs with so many EMD’s. I will say this. If you ever come to New York to railfan, you can’t pass up New Jersey Transit with their fleet of F40’s and GP40’s. Hoboken is the Chicago equivalent of OTC.
@@3985uprr Oh, Yes...I know Hoboken has Tains taking off every few minutes! Last time there was in teh early 1980s. No, you know I never said you said anything bad 😊 about it...I'm just glad you came to visit the Chicago Area! You may not know it...but you have become quite popular with you great Videos, and we Railfans are just happy you stopped by! I'm glad you caught the Empire Builder, I always boch catching it because it seems to always be running late due to freight train interference with Canadian Pacific and Metra, because RUSH HOUR in Chicago I always say starts at 12:30pm and runs the course of the whole afternoon! Kind of brings to mind New Jersey Highway 1-9...blah! I still have to get used to those F59 Silver and Blue Metra Locomotives...they once belonged to Amtrak California at one time, but they just look out of place to me, and havent' really tickled my fancy as yet! When you were at the OTC, you had quite a feast of Trains...and your Camera swung over towards Lake Street Tower. My Wife's cousin (he is now happily retired) worked at that Tower for many years...been up there, it is all Computerized now, (Union Pacific was in the beginning stages of it when I visited it) and when I visited it still had the US&S "Pistol" Grips, and the "Big Green" CN&W Board above it that showed all the trackwork in and out of what was once, North Western Station. Rush Hour is the true HEADACHE HOUR (I've been told YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT RUSH HOUR IS IN CHICAGO UNTIL YOU'VE BEEN UP THERE, lol) for them as I'm sure it is out East for Dipatchers on the LIRR, Metro-North, and NJ Transit! I didn't put your Videos down... I've really enjoyed them, and always look for the next one to come out! Now where will you go next? Los Angeles is really growing with their METROLINK Commuter Rail System (I don't care for those Double Decker Commmuter Cars with the slanted operator's front, SEPTA I understand has those kind of Cars on order and getting them soon) but out there, Railfans love them...not to mention how LAMTA has grown! Got your tickets for the Coast as yet? 😎
@@Harveycartoonlvr11 I know I’m well-known back here in the New York and Boston Philadelphia areas but I didn’t think I was that well-known out in Chicagoland
I enjoy your video's. I try to go to Chicago to get train videos because I don't get much trains where I live sometimes, I can get a Union Pacific train but not really.
Fun Fact: 3 Ex Amtrak F40PH locomotives are now a part of metra's giant fleet of F40s. Amtrak 258 is now Metra 215 (unfortunately it broke down in Morton Grove and hasn't been in service since), Amtrak 375 is now Metra 216 and Finally the last Ex Amtrak F40PH locomotive (for the meantime) is Amtrak 364/VRE V32 and is now Metra 217. Btw 216 and 217 are still in operational service today. Edit: 217 is only Ex-Amtrak F40PH to remain in service, 216 has been placed into Storage.
I attended Elmhurst College and Wheaton was one of our opponents in football (played offensive guard). I grew up near Batavia (near Aurora) so old home week here.
Really appreciate the video. I’d like to take a trip down from Milwaukee to see the tracks from Union Station going south and the trackage going towards Gary, Indiana.
Ah the mecca train site they keep you busy Mister retired railfan Horn Guy I noticed I rather have a train horn blow then hear that Bell at the crosses once the train go by that's it but that train Bell goes on tell the train runs through which I know you miss
I was going to consider that but the scheduling isn’t very convenient. By the time I get back to Chicago on the weekend evening run I don’t get back to my motel in Naperville until around midnight and I had to get up early the next day
You should mention that the old Wheaton Station is at Hale Street, also the bridge that crosses over in Wheaton is the Illinois Prairie path, once the Elgin Branch of the Chicago, Aurora And Elgin Railroad
Yeah I saw some videos last winter of the switches at the Chicago union station literally being lit on fire so they would not freeze didn’t hurt the trains going over a burning switch
RR, you stopping in Erie Pa to railfan on the way home? You could check out Wabtec and see NS and CSX trains galore. Might even catch Amtrak 48 and 49, the Lakeshore.
You are very very knowledge of the railroad industry. Where did you get your education? I worked in the Engineering Dept as a Material Analyst at the Red Lion Plant until it closed.
I am very happy you are in Chi-Town! How is "The Windy City"? Glad to see your favorite Railroad there Retired Railfan Horn Guy. As always I look forward to your amazing coverage and commentary. It brings a classy documentary to the Railroads and with experience. Also Amtrak is fantastic in the Midwest. Try out the Venture cars when you can! Rock On or should I say "Rock Island" like the Rock Island RR (See what I did there).
Can someone answer this for me. When a train has multiple engines do they move in unison? If the lead engine accelerates or breaks do the the others do the same?

Many thanks for a great video. Good to see so many of the F59s from Canada too.

You have only seen the tip of the iceberg. I just got home tonight and I stopped in Scranton to visit Ashley on the way
You are killing us with your KINDNESS in every way! No, we're not Metro North or Your Beloved Long Island, but Metra has it's charm!

Not only did you see the Katy on that train, the second loco was UP 7400 the pink ribbon unit, the only one on up
I was concentrating more on the Katy. I didn’t notice that
Wow. Just wow! Great video
I visited Chicago over the summer. Definitely made sure to stop here during rush hour. You’ll never get bored.
I was impressed!!!
For the bnsf railway I stayed with Roosevelt Rd overpass. Super busy during the rush.
My next Chicago visit I’ll venture further.
Awesome catches of Amtrak, Metra & Union Pacific. Cool catch of Amtrak Empire Builder #8/28 with the Northern Sky Charter Private Cars.
I thought this was a video game from the thumbnail 🤣🤣😅 And then I skipped further into the video and was like nahh, this too good hahaha
24:19 Highland Park is on the North, not Northwest, branch

This is great video. Never seen railfan video from these locations. Chicago is a great railroad town.
Really appreciate the video. I’d like to take a trip down from Milwaukee to see the tracks from Union Station going south and the trackage going towards Gary, Indiana.
That first bridge in the beginning of the video is from the Chicago Aurora and Elgin interurban railroad.
Left-hand running is a holdover from C&NW days if I’m not mistaken. I guess UP finds no reason to change.

You have to hit UP-North sometime to Kenosha and see the PCC Cars they run.
I agree since I live in Kenosha and do see the PCC cars a lot. Even take Metra to Chicago once in awhile.
I was going to consider that but the scheduling isn’t very convenient. By the time I get back to Chicago on the weekend evening run I don’t get back to my motel in Naperville until around midnight and I had to get up early the next day

F40s are awesome, rare to see on the east coast
Nice!!! I’m a Chicago railfan myself!!! You gotta check out Joliet
Trains go slow through there. I did go there but it was quiet. A surprise from that trip should be seen soon
10:01: She's lurking on the NS Reading Line right now on 10K. Should return on 11K tomorrow.

I don't remember the Metra trains being that long.

Can someone answer this for me. When a train has multiple engines do they move in unison? If the lead engine accelerates or breaks do the the others do the same?
They normally do unless the engineer isolates the units
best video yet keep up the great work
Awesome
We need more of this
Empire builder lead engine smoked quite a bit. Is this normal, or does it indicate a problem?
GE’s are problems unto themselves. You can’t spell garbage without the letters GE.
Cool
it's just a shame it's all Quiet Zones.
The trains at the end, do they go to the north platforms? I know the south doesn’t have a crossing
The rail system in the US is a joke compared to Europe and Asia where the have bullet trains that speed along in excess of 300 km/hr.
At least we can still run trains during power outages
