I'm surprised hearing this guy had no interest in funk, when no other drummer has propelled this genre with that amount of groove...perhaps his interest on bebop explained that...a humble guy that gave us unforgettable and historical moments

I briefly played with Mike (and Paul) on a casual basis some 45 years ago....gawd, that's already a scary thought. We/he played his linear funk (which I absolutely loved) and I also knew he liked flat out kakking rock. I didn't really know he was such a bebop devotee. Like many here, I deeply admired Actual Proof and some cuts on Manchild but he's right, Herbie grew relentlessly disco after those records. Great guy, completely unassuming.

Mike, I love you, I am glad you did actual proof, that is jazz to me, maybe not bop, but that is some drumming with integrity.

Actual Proof caused me to start hearing, seeing, feeling things I would have otherwise missed. Your grooves tapped in to the strongest and deepest threads of human experience.

Heard, Do They Hurt-Brand X. Really interesting stuff. Bought all their stuff of course.

The man. Interesting how he observes the later Herbie funk, post-Headhunters, sounded like it needed a singer. I agree, big time. The disco influences diluted the hard edge sound.

The beats he played with the Headhunters were not simple. It's too bad that he doesn't count the music of Stevie Wonder or Herbie Hancock as related to jazz...there is certainly less freedom with SW, but his take is interesting. He is an elder so I respect his perspective.

I consider jazz the music of Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard etc but I must say I love the music of Stevie Wonder and many funk artists and I also respect your opinion.

1jazzhead I'm just saying that it's related, and that relationship is of interest to me. Nothing wrong with the names you mentioned at all - can't go wrong with them! I'm a Monk lover.

Yes it all comes from the Blues for sure...I just like to play the music that represents my passion and what I am most comfortable in however that doesnt mean I dont like doing anything else just not as much ..anyway for me...each to their own...I did so many blues and funk gigs bak in the day playing from simple to complex that I learned a lot and more important I have stories that are beyond !!!!
